The way things are panning out it’s gonna make a certain poster on here. Look like an absolute tool and just hoping that when Sharman gets back in the side it makes him look even sillier

This is a dynamic looking side which can only improve considering how young some of our debutants are and also the calibre of the coaching panel
We’ll said Firey
I had a chuckle too …”changing coaches gets you nowhere…”
Uttter rot
Forget the result today we’ll lose plenty this year
But look at THE WAY we played….with discipline
Far tighter defence- we didn’t leak goals like a sieve
A plan to go into attack - not perfect but we lowered our eyes! Hallelujah!!
Far far better ball transition…..who says RTB can only do defence?????
I laughed after game Jack Steele made the comment “sane again next week”…. That’s so Ross Lyon ….effort and commitment are non negotiable…..that’s what he instills as a great coach
Carlton/Bombers shoulda nabbed him….glad they didn’t …
I think I saw some Ross Lyon “magic dust” sprinkled tonight..
Poo excitement
Sincs - class
Sure, won’t beat too many top 4 sides at 59% efficiency by foot …but we know we have a few to turn over ..
Great win

I don't wanna start another thread, but I just would like to mention 'effort'.

It's a weird word, one that can be over-used and just thrown around willy-nilly, esp by the Fox commentators so they sound knowledgeable.

Richo used to rabbit on about effort, but too often the guys turned it over and didn't score often enough.

RTB might be big on effort, as all coaches would be, but I think from tonight's game, I believe the entire squad understands that 'effort' on its own is no good unless you get results for your effort.
Not just footy, but in a lot of things in life, folks might say 'oh, well, at least you had a red-hot go' .

I get the feeling the squad has stepped up and knows, to a man, that effort, precision, efficiency, etc, are all equally important.
There's a plan, there's team rules, there's being disciplined (apart from a brain fade from Man Of givin up a 50)
It's only Rd 1, but it feels like a rebirth.

This has to bring confidence in the group that when you go on the paddock and put effort into the plan anything is possible. Hopefully we will only improve as we get get our injury list under control. Well done to the boys and the coaching staff. One down 26 to go.

We looked far more organised
No doubt we’ll have games where we will be far more pressured (I expect Dogs to be red hot..)
But if we keep staying the course it’ll turn
You get the sense players have brought in
Couldn’t say that last half last year
As Steele said post game….same again next week …that is the Lyon ‘anywhere anytime’ ethis cause you know what we bring

You can’t point to the screen and tell the ump to watch the replay.

Just like the rule that you can't punch a ball out of bounds from a handball like Hunter Clark did. Only happened three other times by Freo players no free kick.

It comes under the limitless discretionary rules our umpires can and do invoke by specious interpretation. Dangerous given their lack of maturity and hard headed clarity. And betting habits.

Like Hunter comes in at 100km an hour to force a contest on the boundary line , smashes the ball the only way physics allows and ump pays deliberate. Umpire has effectively made up a rule that a player cannot contest the ball if his intervention might cause an out of bounds. Clearly ridiculous and inconsistent with 99% of contested boundary line contests adjudications. Umpiring outcome not intent when the actual rule is all about intent.

Pointing at the replay was not the sins committed. It was embarrassing the umpires because they had made crap calls. There was no dissent, the umpires were told they were technically wrong and there is the proof. They knew they were wrong but instead of going ok, made a blue, but no refund lets get on. They became petulant. Captains and vice Captains have every right to tell an umpire he/she was in error. Does not mean you are saying I am not standing the mark or I'm throwing a hissy fit a la Oliver, its a legitimate communication.

As was the Deliberate call against Gresh. The f****** ball took a right angled turn all by itself. It is after all not a round ball.

Have a read. Maybe take a look for the "Deliberate out of bounds" rule you've been harping on about lately. Spoiler, you'll be searching a while! :D

And you still haven't gotten back to me about how many goals we kicked from frees?

So why don't they pay it all the time? Why are the two calls both against StKilda.

So insufficent attempt not deliberate. Either way the free against Clark was cheating.

You are not a mod or a f****** censor so stop trying to be both.
There are posters on both sides of the fence when it comes to commenting on umpiring in the match thread.
So here's my take on it.

Commenting on the umpiring is fine and part of going to to the footy.
However if that commenting becomes obsessive, relentless and manifestly one eyed there's a point where it becomes spam. Relentless being the key word here.

There are a few posters who regularly diss the umpiring and others who regularly disagree with them. May I suggest guys that no ground is going to be given so you generally agree to disagree.

Clearly, Curly you are the most avid critic of the umpiring. I've made it clear over a few seasons now that spamming the match thread with umpiring comments won't be allowed. There was one thread a couple of seasons ago where you made 35 comments in the match thread and 32 of them were about the umpiring being biased against the Saints. That's an average of 8 per quarter or one every four minutes or less. My interpretation of that kind of posting is that it constitutes spam.

Curly has been asked many times to not spam the match thread and experience has shown that if unchecked, his umpiring posts and the arguments arising from them come to dominate the match thread. Hence, a few comments are within the bounds of reason but beyond that, please start a separate thread about umpiring so the match thread doesn't descend into a s*** fight.

Moderating against a personality again and not to the rules again.

Why cant the ones doing the complaining just use the FOE function. That's' what its there for.

Be a damn shame to lose more personalities like Curly, I love what he brings to the site.

If you aren't careful you will only be left with a half a dozen old and intolerant cranky old men on this site.

Vortex, I advise you to be very careful. Leopards and spots. I noticed your previous comments in this thread,
"if you are 13 years old and still collect Scanlan footy cards I suppose that makes sense"

and

"it's hard concept to grab for those that don't understand some fundamentals of the game.."

Stay away from personally derogatory commenting or s*** stirring. You are on thin ice.

No I'm not moderating to a personality. My aim is to keep fights, abuse and ongoing disputes off the forum.
Curly's umpiring posts in the match thread contravene this rule,

"Do not spam the forum board with multiple posts designed to disrupt the harmony of the board. This may include repeating a point of view over and over, when such posts cause the forum to descend into abuse. Such disruption will result in a 1 WEEK BAN."

There has always been a relaxation of moderation on game day threads, ALWAYS!

Everyone has a few drinks and the banter get's colourful in game day threads, but your power tripping seems to be getting worse and you just completely don't moderate to the spirit of the occasion, it just doesn't occur to you that the posters complaining probably also are on the juice and playing games.

It can be simply moderated by telling the complainers to use the FOE button but for some reason you chose to ignore that the complainers love the game and you are pandering and aiding them in their games.

You are killing this site St.Byron and you can twist it any way you like but you are moderating to personalities, targeting Curly just is completely losing the plot and you are continuing to drive away some of our most colourful and more interesting personalities. The site is boiling down to a half a dozen grumpy and intolerant individuals.

I distinctly remember you bitching and complaining about Curly before you returned to moderating and it is a complete conflict you are now targeting him, as I said recently, you becoming moderator again would be like letting Saynta become moderator, there would be no one left on the site within days.

Just recon you need to chill St. Byron and let the board breath some life back into itself and stick to moderating only the things that should be moderated, definitely nothing in the game day thread that needs you to come out hot and heavy.

With umpiring what you look for is near enough to consistency.

You will never get consistency hence the reference to "near enough".

And that the swings and roundabouts even out.

There were a couple of holding the ball penalties against us which I thought questionable on prior opportunity, not replicated the other way.

One against 47 was arms length from us, and if he had prior opportunity ahead of being bundled over the boundary line, well you could have fooled me because it was split second stuff between taking the ball and being hit, forcing the ball free and over the boundary line.

So stiff.

The Umpires entered into discussion on decisions, the players then contesting the Umpires by referencing the Scoreboard.

The scene to reference the Scoreboard was set by the Umpires entering into discussion (and explanation).

Why do they have to enter into a discussion with a player after a decision is made?

The call of "Free kick, holding" is as far as it needs to go.

Anything else is an Umpire justifying - and inviting a response.

They are not there to give description and commentary to players.

They have the whistle.

And they are undermining their authority by adding to the whistle.

The Umpires need to recognize that they are there to umpire - and it is the players we attend to see, not the Umpires.
