For those at the game…

Post: # 1997777Post skeptic »

Can you tell me a bit about the role Zaine Cordy played today. Only saw the game on TV and remember set up an early goal with a well placed kick forward and then I don’t think I saw him again until the last 15min of the game.
I noted he played in the ruck a bit around that time but the stats suggest he only had the one hit out.

Obviously had a really big last 10min… had the big tackle that essentially saw him kick the sealing goal (or close to it). Had 3 touches before that goal… then 3 touches in the last 10min. AFL app says he played 94min on ground.

He really didn’t seem to be near the play at all from what I could see. Didn’t seem to feature in many contest

What was his role?

Sorry I didn't watch the amateurs or did you mean Zaine Cordy?

Was pretty much unsighted for much of the game. When he was near it, contested ok and brought the ball to the ground. That was my opinion.

Spent some time in ruck relieving Roma, but I think his role was to add some size and experience to a team lacking in both.

I think I was at the game or was I an extra in the blade runner movie ?

That was his role which should have been clear to most except for those with blinkers on and thought Sharman should have played instead...which has given me a bald spot from scratching my head so much.

It should have been clear purely for the reason we had an injury crisis and had literally run out of AFL grade players and as I say I have a bald spot and can't work out why it's so hard to realise Sharman is WAY OFF the pace. It's like Spencer White all over again.

As we know Ross loves his role players and clearly Cordy played his role today, even got a mention for his role in Ross's presser.

Cordy is not a forward but he's capable of AFL grade footy and so when you have an injury crisis you play the players who can play over players who just are so way off the pace.

So what was his role? And how did you rate his game?

Or more to the point… I’ve repeatedly given you reasons as to why I thought his performance wasn’t great and why his selection was concerning. You have yet to outline a single positive about his performance or selection beyond vague proclamations about “doing his role” and how others could only be worst. Those aren’t objective reasons.

Spill what you liked about his game because from where I sit… Caminiti is a much much better prospect.

Bonus points if you can answer a question about Cordy without rubbishing Sharman or having a dig at other forumites.

It's hard not to based on the fact the agenda against Cordy is built as as result of resentment for Sharman not taking his spot which is a real head scratcher

His role was to compete in the air and create the ground contest. Kicked a goal in a low scoring game so he made a contribution that helped us win. Ross mentioned him in his presser so clearly Ross must of thought he played his role, mentioned bringing it to ground.

First of all apologies for editing my post while you were answering.

Secondly… Well you failed on the first count.

I didn’t particularly see him bring the ball to ground… in fact I didn’t see him at all for 2.5 quarters.

Here’s the problem with the RL argument…
Version 1.0 had a habit of overvaluing the contribution of his role players… did it with Eddy, McQualter, defensive forward Dempster etc. for all of his strengths that was a flaw of his style IMO. The argument that the coach rates an unquantifiable contribution IMO doesn’t cut it.
I’ve heard Ratten and Richo use this same BS line to justify ongoing selections of Newnes, Kent, Weller, Longer etc

If Corey’s role was that of a forward or ‘defensive forward’ and if his opponent was Cox… I can’t see a rationale argument for that performance as being anything other than a disaster. Clearly not fit enough to keep up with him and non-factor in the game for all but 10min

On that performance… should be behind Campbell too

That's all good and well but where your argument has continued to fall down over a long period if time when arguing that point, and that is the alternative player you put up, and in this case you arguing Shamran should have played instead of Cordy.

RTB has coached for years, as an assistant and senior coach.
Lenny worked at GWS for ages.
Harves worked as an assistant for years too.
These 3, plus Boris etc, are on the selection committee.

Cordy played his game.
I see him as a plodder...not in a bad way but just getting along to the contest, nothing fancy.
But by consistently plodding...which he does, he ends up with opportunity. Not neccesarily because of a ferocious attack but just being there, in the packs, moving and being a target in marking.

I cant see him being more than a solid, reliable C+ player....which we do need..

Cordy was mostly unsighted but bobbed up and kicked the final goal. As a backup for Marshall I'd be more comfortable with Campbell.

Minimal impact, but we simply don't have enough big bodies available at the moment.

Probably plays again this week.

He certainly isn't a forward. He did two nice things - counting the tackle and goal as two - but his only place in our line-up, if at all, is in defence.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Here’s a hint

The three Freo key defenders took 50 odd marks between them and were the teams leading possession winners

That’s how well our key forwards played

Cordy was ordinary

Most of those marks were just chipping it around in defence in a fruitless attempt to find a way through the Great Wall of Ross.

Shouldn’t really count as marks.

Caminiti, a debutant, showed promise I thought. Seems a good competitor. Cordy did his role.

You don’t expect either to be Max King. All we’re really asking of them at this point is that they add structure, compete and bring the ball to ground if they can’t mark. Any goals they kick are a bonus.

Pffft.

The 3 Freo keys took 36 marks between them and the majority were from their own players not intercepting, this happened because we allowed them to rack up useless marks and uncontested possession, in fact, we preferred it. They just couldn't move the ball from deep defence and not have it fired directly back at them.

When the game was in the balance, Brennan took 0 in the last quarter and we dominated in our half. 17 of the 20 were uncontested. We let him have the ball.

The game was won in the midfield. Convincingly. Wanganeen Milera, Byrnes, Bytel, Owens, Clark and Phillipou were the difference.

Put King Windhager and Membrey in the team and remove Butler, Cordy and Caminiti and we would have demolished them.

Exactly, was also attending ruck contests at different ends of the ground, clearly wasn't going to beat Darcy and Jackson but just had to compete.

Dished off a beautiful pass to Gresh for a goal and kicked a goal of his own, so that's 2 goals from a total of 10 for the team.

Drew multiple defenders to a contest and bought the ball to ground

So that's 3 goals he's help go onto the scoreboard out of 7.

Watching the replay he also looked like he was directing the younger players so I'm guessing you want his type of experience in the forward line.

He also looked like he covered the ground well which surprised me considering the training watchers frequently commented on his fitness...which is where I suspect a lot of this surprising bias might have come from. Who knows though he could still be fairly unfit but doubt he will survive in Lyons side if he is.

Sorry I thought Caminiti was the topic, Cordy was decoy target.

It appears quick movement forward and a kick to a 50/50 contest was a catalyst to set up press defence and hold that position, as Freo spread through defence and rebounded into all our players that didn't follow them in.

It was classic Lyon.
