Oh to be the West Coast Eagles at the present time.
I heard Luke Shuey on radio the other morning stating Eagles only had 2 injuries at the moment, who couldn’t undertake the normal training sessions. Lucky them eh?
A little different to their last season, when they were having trouble fielding a side for about their first five matches due to major injuries mainly to star players, when they had to use all those ‘top up players’. One match they ran onto the field, where 2 players hadn’t even trained with the side - hope Saints don’t get to that stage.

Perhaps look a little deeper ….
Had less injuries when Misson came on board after GT training services debacle????
Maybe…just maybe that the softer injuries are a result of poor training standards over the last 3 years????
Everyone knows Brett has previously admitted he got it wrong when letting players “choose their own pre season training program”
Did he really allow the players to choose their pre-season training program? I didn't know that, seriously, he should have been sacked for that alone if that was the case.
i get where the criticism is coming from - but its a bit of a stretch
as professionals they were given the freedom to come back ready
the running then starts with time trials etc
given options to work on areas that you see are strengths or weaknesses - i think is ok
its your fitness at the end of the season that matters most
It’s fact.
Ratten admitted they’d botched that pre season by giving players too much latitude over their pre season and allowing them to come back in less than tip too shape
Just take a look at Brad Hill this year….no little muffin top for Brad this year …..why is that???
Standards. That’s why.
I can’t believe people support the club and miss important bits like this…anyhoo RTB sorting it
Oh and take a listen to fitness of the ENTIRE list now buying in….what did our captains presser say?? “Last year we were divided…” why???
Select group of players busted their guts….a number clearly loafed ….not this year it’s being called out
Standards.
Funny how personal bias colours memory recollection

Fortunately for West Coast and their supporters they understood it was due to the madness surrounding Covid, had that been St Kilda it would have been the the coaches fault and training standards.

Not really but cheap shot away …you’d be another to squeal if you got a little tap back..
Go back and find the statement by Ratten where he admits we got the pre season program wrong I think it was 21 hence they went psycho in 22 then ran out of puff
Point was …should never have happened at AFL level
I can’t be arsed doing your homework
Name an AFL player who isn’t fit, or injuries were caused by fitness?!
Elite athletes need to train and compete, and during either can get injured.
If you have a lot of injuries or few injuries largely comes down to luck!
In AFL football there will undoubtedly be injuries, it’s a ballistic contact sport. Fitness staff can prepare players to play, if injuries happen - not much they can do about it!

"What are Overtraining Injuries?
Overtraining injuries occur when you engage in more physical activity than your body is used to. These can occur to any person who increases their activity levels, increases the intensity of those activities, and/or changes the types of physical activities that they engage in.
These injuries are musculoskeletal. This means that they do or can involve the muscles of the body, the joints, and even the bones."
I remember that Robert Harvey was told to step back with the amount of training he did to lessen the risk of injury.
There are different types of fitness. Ability to run out a game, and ability to break a pack or muscle out a marking contest are totally different areas. If we were not controlled in where the focus was, it makes sense we had issues.

Agree with Teffers point.
We were great in ‘22 but ran out of puff. We have those explosive passages in the third or last quarters and ran over the oppo - for the first month or so, then a we fell away, got a couple of cheap wins before the bye - and then we were bottom 4 material.
Better to be injured at training than in a match. It's the injuries from here on in that matter. We will slowly get our team back together throughout the year.
15 players on the injured list before 1 single game of the season is significant.
Why is it happening?
Who the heck knows?
Could be increased demands for intensity.
Could be exersion due to perceived pressure to lift.
Could be weakness physically from 3 years of 'less intense' training, expectations etc.
Could be life. It really does just happen.
We will be ok. Blessing to get an opportunity to see the B level & newbie lads step in & maybe we will find some gems

I don’t know why but I’m kind of leaning into this too. Obviously there’s a few here that lean towards bad luck… but generally speaking, if fitness, recovery, attention to detail (Ala diet) etc is up to scratch, then isn’t it amazing how ‘lucky’ people are. Reckon we’ve been off the pace for a long time

St Kilda coaches overtraining the players??
That's a joke, surely.....
The pre-season seriuous injuries sustained by King and Hayes are hardly the result of an excessive workload, it's not as if St Kilda's players are going down like flies.
Every club experiences injuries to players during the pre-season, match simulations always carry a risk to a player getting injured.
The only situation where this could be argued is if a player goes down in the gym but nowadays every player will be required to follow pre-set load-bearing exercise programmes so that is a rarity.

Doesn't even pass the pub test
So a coach who is ubiquitously heralded as someone with exacting expectations and professionalism in processes comes in and breaks the system to find out where the previous management were going wrong?
I'd like to think that even an amateur fitness instructor knows you need to evaluate the baseline before preparing a program which in the case of an AFL club includes the benefit of reviewing historical data and documents by people with sports science backgrounds.
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
