Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
A mate of mine is doing some media work around celebrating the Saints 150th anniversary and is needing some input on the infamous Disco days at the club.
He has reasonably good access to Saints players for re-enactments etc.
I thought I'd put it to the Saintsational brains trust:
Who were the key players?
Any notable stories , even if they are apocryphal?
Much appreciated

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
I am not against people having a good time but are we a serious football club
To celebrate our 150th do we want to glorify a past that just adds to the perception of us as a joke
Never mind that during the late 70s and 80s our record was pretty much disgraceful, but hell we could put on a party
Blokes like Brereton etc could party as well, but they were completely serious about winning first
As serious supporters what would you rather have.. a finalist or a party team

Nah, we can do without some arseholes trying to show us in a bad light for money.
So sorry, no stories from me and I agree with TSR.

Yep, sounds like a shameless money grab to me.
The whole period was a disgrace, not to mention all the other perverted behaviour that was harboured within the walls at the time.
Its been acknowledged enough. f*** celebrating it.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
The problem our club has, and I'm not actually sure it's a problem as such, we are supposedly in the business of premierships and 1 in 150 makes it hard to tease out the celebrations. There are a lot of our younger supporters who think landing someone on the moon is boring let alone asking them to watch a football match in black and white.
It's a tough one to market.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
I met my wife at the Saints disco which was on Friday nights in the early/mid eighties. That was the place to be on a Friday night if you lived in the area.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

It was a crappy time for the club, and the Saints Disco was just part of thatBanger9798 wrote: ↑Tue 07 Mar 2023 1:21pm A mate of mine is doing some media work around celebrating the Saints 150th anniversary and is needing some input on the infamous Disco days at the club.

Geez,
It's light hearted, he has players on side, past and current. Relax will you.

Of course it’s light hearted, that’s one of the issuesBanger9798 wrote: ↑Wed 08 Mar 2023 12:07am Geez,

From 1974-1990 the St K FC won a total of 103 games of football
An average of a touch over 6 per season over 17 seasons!!! Unbelievable
And if you want to take it further from 1979-1990 (60 games at 5 per year)
It is worse than damning, I sort of feel lucky that i lived interstate from 1983 with limited TV coverage so didn’t have to endure it close up.
I want our club to have a legacy of sustained success , that doesn’t mean that players can’t have fun (absolutely they must), but celebrating the disco just perpetuates our story .

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
The Saints back then were party-central, and if you were there, you would know why we were a low achieving club in that era. Our appalling lack of success is not really something to joke about.

I'll see if I can get them to focus on all the premierships we won, instead.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
I think we were underage, but I vaguely remember being new at the entrance in a bar area of sorts. We would speculate about the players having fun in there and say things to each other like, ‘oh..betcha so and so gets so pissed’…and ‘ I heard that sos and so did this … or that last week…’ ..
It was harmless moronic stuff.
We still idolized them…
And the scuttlebutt wasn’t only about St Kilda players. I think we thought players from other clubs went in there.
We were too young and it was just kids being morons.. my social life wasn’t exactly the Love Boat.
I don’t mind us having a laugh…St Kilda was so broken my whole life until Sheldon’s teams. I knew nothing else, my entire childhood, St Kilda was always trying, but we were just prone to the most awful plunges into the abyss. It eventually became our brotherhood. Most if my mates were Richmond supporters anyway, and when I met another St Kilda person, it was like wow…respect..we were different.
For you guys old enough to taste success, I am sure it is different now, and why you might take offense at exploiting St Kilda’s rough past for s***s and giggles. I get that…but for my generation, it was all we knew.

It doesn't sound like disco was so popular with some of our fan base?Banger9798 wrote: ↑Wed 08 Mar 2023 8:48am I'll see if I can get them to focus on all the premierships we won, instead.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
The Saints Disco was great fun. I also use to go to North Melb and sometimes Essendon & Swans who also had disco's. I can assure everyone its wasn't just Saints players having a drink prior to a game. It wasn't sterile like it is now. A lot of players smoked as well.
Sometimes they had live music after a game and Eel use to play in a band. Great memories.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
It was terrible that players used to smoke , drink and socialise at the club (and have the occasional punch on ) So much better since the early 90s with players moving on to proper dives and doing proper drugs that maintain their skinfolds.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
I really enjoyed the Saints disco, I don't have any stories of note but it was a place with a great vibe and you could mingle with players, obviously not as well as some of the drop dead gorgeous ladies could.
I remember when the Club was effectively the Carlton FC retirement / superannuation entity, one particular ex Carlton player, I cannot think of his name - possibly started with 'M' & not Marcou, always seemed to be on crutches in the Social Club but it did not stop him attracting a harem, like moths to a flame.

Re: Request for Moorabbin Disco Stories
Maybe but for some reason I keep thinking a name like Mullins or Muller or similar???
I should google but prefer to try and force the memory to work.
