Re: Owens
As much as McCartin, Goddard and McKenzie
Or
Billings, Dunstan, Acres
Or Clark and Coffield???
We get excited about kids (which is fine) but until the make it, they are nothing more than possibles
Owens is a prime example
Hasn’t done a thing
Yet in 3 years will be a dominant stating mid???
He hopefully will be, and maybe he will become a good AFL player
But he could also be delisted by then
Windhager has already shown AFL ability

But he’s got some improvement left to do if he’s to be an AFL player.
Doesn’t help that he’s being played out of position (forward) he is clearly an inside mid
His kicking is not good.
We love him because he’s a good size (Acres), but is he a good player?
Not as yet imo

Re: Owens
Sandringham has been run by the StK development coaches since 2012
Basically been the StK reserves
Guys who haven’t made it, haven’t done so because they were not good enough, not because of the team they were in
Plenty have performed awesome at Sandy and have made it in the AFL
Sinclair is a prime example
But generally you’re in the VFL because you’re either young or ordinary (or both) and no matter the development coaches

Re: Owens
I remember Lenny Hayes playing in the forward half a bit when he started with us and looked ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. He seemed to blossom under GT and went on as a top midfielder. If Lyon thinks Owens is up to it, then he will get a senior game, but I guess he would want to get a bit more of the ball in the next match sim against the Bombers. Lyon would have been a little concerned about the lack of goals from the forwards and midfield in general against the Demons. I don't really know where Owens sits in the scheme of things yet.

Re: Owens
Lenny Hayes looked quality from his first training session
Took a while to become a starting mid… with Harvey, Burke and Thompson in the side
In 2001 he was leading the B&F until mid season injury

Re: Owens
Should have sacked Lenny Hayes after two years and tried recruiting someone who might have an instant impact?
And playing in the VFL is a sign of ordinariness? (despite being one step away from AFL seniors)
Gotta love supporter banter! It's a great distraction engaging in discussion about the Saints. Can't wait for rd1. Very exciting.

Re: Owens
I’m definitely not saying Owens can’t make it, I personally think he can and probably will
What I’m saying is that he hasn’t done anything yet?
And there’s no certainty that he will
I’ve seen
Windhager compared to Dusty
Phillipou compared to Bont
And
Owens compared to Fyfe
Only Windhager has demonstrated AFL ability as yet
Let them actually do something before getting ahead of ourselves
I do remember
Spencer ‘Buddy’ White
Arryn ‘BJ who’ Siposs
Jade ‘GAJ’ Gresham
Hunter ‘Pendles’ Clark

Re: Owens
Who’s writing them off?
Saying temper expectations and not label a kid who barely got a kick at the level the next Nat Fyfe
If he ends up as good as Nat Fyfe - great
But at this stage - we are getting excited over FA

Re: Owens
Only a few sightings and a praccy game but I get a sneaking feeling Phillipou will go ok. In fact watching him on Friday was exciting and damn with a pretty miserable pre-season injury news wise some excitement is very welcome here. True, Owens is all potential at this stage. Encouraging. But needs to start locking onto a few grabs.

Re: Owens
There are obviously/apparently major issues somewhere, because a lot of other clubs (in fact, most of them) can grow young talent into very productive senior players.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Mon 27 Feb 2023 6:07pmSandringham has been the worst possible nursery for young talent.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 27 Feb 2023 5:43pm As much as McCartin, Goddard and McKenzie

Player development has been the issue, not the players.
I'll name some players that we've grown:
Gresham, Billings, Sinclair, Ross, Webster, Battle come to mind.
Here's some that showed promise but fell away:
Siposs, Spencer White, Minchington, Fergus Watts, Nathan Wright, Connolly (there's a lot more)
I think at any other club, the ones who didn't make it, would've ended up best 25.
We seem to get our better players by raiding other clubs, who did the development work for us.
You know who they are.
What is the issue with the Zebs? Is it coaching? Are the players not being coached under the St Kilda system?
Ratts' system was not the best, will the new assistants create a massive change in player development?
There were times when guys were dropped to the Zebs (Billings, and Steele- in his first year I think) and they got a huge number of possies in response.
The new regime needs to impact development, in a big way, to improve young guys and grow them into the best they can be.
If that doesn't happen, if young guys are stuck in Purgatory forever, then we won't break the glass ceiling of the Top 8 and we'll wallow down the bottom like Norf.
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Re: Owens
Whatever you do don't get excited by our young players!
Why the f*** not??
What is the point of following a footy team if you don't get enthusiastic about your youngsters?
Might as well just pack it in.

Re: Owens
I think the key with Windhager and Owens is their friendship and their apparent appetites for hard work. I suspect they will push each other to make it. 2022 was just the start.
For Owens, the first six rounds of 2023 will be a litmus test, then I hope to see him freed up when key forwards return.
It's our predicament at present, this period will have nothing to do on whether he makes it.

Re: Owens
May monsters everyone.
Going too early on judgement, after 1 practice match, played on the toughest defender in the game, seems to be a little contradictory to me.
Owens has been nothing but impressive in his commitment to his development. He is 19 and has caught the eye of most of those who have seen him train. What's not to be excited about.?

Re: Owens
Surely giving him the experience to play on some of the best back-men in a practice match was a great idea, we don't want him playing on the worst, kicking 6 goals and learning nothing.
