Owens
I know we overrate our kids because we need hope.
But he’s got some improvement left to do if he’s to be an AFL player.
Doesn’t help that he’s being played out of position (forward) he is clearly an inside mid
His kicking is not good.
We love him because he’s a good size (Acres), but is he a good player?
Not as yet imo

Re: Owens
I tend to agree B.M.. Unfortunately it's his size and our current injury list that has him out of position. Ideally he plays in the middle with an ability to rest forward.
I watched Windhager yesterday and the hype and hope for him is justified. Great vision, great discipline and terrific work ethic.
I'd like to think Owens makes it and that realisation will happen once he's part of the midfield rotations.

Re: Owens
This has been brought up a few times already. He’s a promising young kid but his displayed form hasn’t been crash hot. For whatever reason he inspires a lot confidence both internally and outside of the club too.
Shouldn’t play as forward because that’s not what he is

Re: Owens
Ideally, he should be played as an inside mid. I see that's where his future lies. The times he was at the centre bounces last year, he was a competitive animal.

Re: Owens
Just on Acres, I was told he absolutely carved it up in Carltons praccy match, has continued on from his form last year, I'm still amazed Freo gave him away.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 25 Feb 2023 9:57am I know we overrate our kids because we need hope.

Owens is like a lot of our list, getting a game because there are no other options, where he's probably got it over say Sharman as forward options is his defensive and ground work, but it's splitting hairs really.

Re: Owens
Ridiculous negativity
He is 19 years old, I repeat 19. Born 2003
Played 7 games last year and some time yesterday. Such a huge body of work!!
Enough apparently for the “good” judges on here to write him off

Re: Owens
Owens needs to be in a position to attack the ball, but if we are going to play more midfielders, some of them need to learn to play forward.
Would help if they could learn to kick to players who are making space and not over their heads.

There’s just a lot of hype about him.
Personally I feel pretty confident he’ll make it… but I reckon he’ll be one of those types that plays 20-30 games and explodes. At the moment, he’s constantly referenced as a clear top 22 anywhere and the performance doesn’t match the hype.
What fills me with confidence is that unlike others… in addition to the “potential tag”, he seems driven to do the work.

Yes, I agree. I remember that Lenny Hayes took at least 3 years to look like a decent player.terry smith rules wrote: ↑Sat 25 Feb 2023 3:43pm Ridiculous negativity

I haven't seen much of Owens so help me along.
His strengths? Good build, likes the physical contest. Has an eye for a goal. What else?
Weaknesses? Obviously inexperienced. Anything else that stands out?

Re: Owens
19 and a bull, he will get better and become a very good player. Great attack on player and ball.
He was rucking against Gawn...not your ideal situation for an onballer.

It's what we do as rabbit St. Kilda fans, not sure if the same phenomenon exists at other clubs, it's like another player (who I won't mention) also suffers from the same overhype.skeptic wrote: ↑Sat 25 Feb 2023 6:03pmI don’t think any one is writing him offterry smith rules wrote: ↑Sat 25 Feb 2023 3:43pm Ridiculous negativity

Re: Owens
Just play Owens and Bytel at Sandy for the next 2 years
Leave Ross and Crouch in the centre because they are known quantities and they are both terrific blokes

If he held his marks and kicks straight we all froth
He looks a prospect but just doesn’t quite have the polish
Which is why he will be a constant tease and source of frustration

Re: Owens
A 19 yo old kid just starting his second year, being asked to play as an under sized key forward/ruckman and we are criticising him? Lets have some patience and show faith in the kid and back those in like Lenny who are actually working with him and rate him.

Re: Owens
We won't be playing Melbourne every week.
Wait and see how he goes against a team like Essenson next week.

In 2 or 3 years (we can hope for earlier), Owens, Windhager and Phillipou will be our main guys in the middle. They could very well be a scary combination. All big, confident and attacking minded.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 25 Feb 2023 9:57am I know we overrate our kids because we need hope.
