I like the optimism but, unfortunately, i think the reality will be somewhat different.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

No doubt, but it is really just looking at the depth.
First time in quite a few years that it seems to be decent with promising youth fighting for spots with established senior players on most lines.

I know this was a 'depth' post but I don't think Mattaes is in the best 22 right now - we have to separate excitement from reality. I really like Bytel and think he can be a real player, but he's also probably not in the best 22 either, as it stands. I'd definitely have Hayes and DMac in there.

Yes, and Wood probably gets a game ahead of Phillipou Coffield , possibly Owens, but I wanted to squeeze as many of the young guys in there as possible.
The point is, whichever way you configure your best team, you're leaving out some very good players , which strikes me as a bit different to previous years. There seems to be competition for nearly every spot

I know this has been an hysterical pre season and if there was silverware awarded we would already have won it it for best summer of training sessions.

Excellent OP as it is purely about depth, demographics in terms of age and experience as well as holes and where development must come from.
A good glimpse of our entire list. Cheers Banger9798

Ruck depth is poor.
Key defender depth is poor.
Key forward depth is poor.
Can’t agree with you.

Yeah the OP claims depth but the rose coloured goggles are very foggy. Very foggy.

Agreed that has been an problem for some years, we simply have no continuity with the amount of injured players we have. 2021 was an exception but even then we had more lost games than many other clubs.

Clearly this is an OP about depth, not availability so it is an excellent insight into our list and what it requires to be better. No better way than doing what the OP has done, whether those two teams are right is irrelevant.

The thread title includes the words "we have good depth", written as a claim.
Some poster have posted some excellent insight into their disagreement with the claim.
Personally I think we have zero depth for AFL capable players in most positions especially key spine positions.
Hopefully we get some players move into the AFL capable category over the next year or so but I suspect Ross will turn the list over heavily so many of those names won't be on the list at the end of Ross's current contract.

Best team plays finals.
We are due for a good injury free run, i.e. less long term ones to really important pieces of our whole.
Need Heath to keep improving.

Re: Best Team and Magoos - we have good depth!
It is always interesting to select the “Second’s side” when selecting your preferred A Grade side
Currently we have some adequate depth courtesy of players returning from injury and who we have recruited including thru Drafting
We start by 3 Top 10 Draft Picks returning being Billings, Clark and Coffield
The adequate depth is mid sized players
What we now look for is our Drafted players of KPP and Ruck physique to develop and to make their case for AFL selection
And we have a few, starting with Heath and Adams then those in their first year at the Club
IF they come on the profile goes from adequate to satisfactory
Thru the pre-season and thru the Season proper I will be monitoring their progress in hope
IF Adams can slot in as a key defender and Heath as a forward/ruck imagine the difference that will make to our side
Then if a couple of others come on all the better
Youth and optimism, hey?
And we are talking about structure for the next 10 years or more - including King and anyone else we Draft

Vortex knows a bit about footy but the sarcasm is mind blowing boring as f*** ...can you ban people for being over the top banal . It's seriously draining and makes you want to throw up .

Re: Best Team and Magoos - we have good depth!
Claiming our list has "good" depth is an exaggeration of tbe truth.
Keep it real atleast.
Keep it real atleast.
Re: Best Team and Magoos - we have good depth!
Just to add to my previous contribution.
Our List now includes:-
Howard 197
Adams 198
Heath 204
King 202
Marshall 201
Cordy 195
Van Es 197
Allison 195
Keeler 198
Campbell 201
Caminiti 196 (Given media reports are correct and he is added to the List)
So fingers crossed that some will emerge as genuine AFL players, joining Howard, King and Marshall.
I see Cordy as back up during this period of evolution.
Then we have future Draft picks and recruiting as options to add to our KPP and Ruck resources.
And, I repeat, we have 3 Top 10 Draft Picks added to our resources for 2023 (Billings, Clark and Coffield)
Plus we have the emerging Wanganeen-Milera, Windhager, Owens and Phillipou.
The listing of potential KPP/Ruck resources are put in this context.

1/3 of our list has already been turned over in the past year and a half. What more do you want ?Vortex wrote: ↑Sun 12 Feb 2023 9:11pmGhost Like wrote: ↑Sun 12 Feb 2023 8:46pm Clearly this is an OP about depth, not availability so it is an excellent insight into our list and what it requires to be better. History and statistics suggest strongly a new coach who has been brought in to rebuild a list will want his own players in the team.saynta wrote: ↑Mon 13 Feb 2023 10:17am1/3 of our list has already been turned over in the past year and a half. Bassett's words in his press conferences to the effect we were bringing a new coach in to dislodge us from the middle of the ladder to hopefully move it north of that position and was happy to accept we may need to go backwards first achieve thst goal.
Not exactly a glowing endorsement of the current list by our Pres when you dissect his comments but his point of view is shared my many pundits outside the club.
R1 hasn't happened but that's when we get our first look at who will make it into Lyon's future plans.
