Scrappy

Would be the word that comes to mind when describing 4 fifteen minute quarters of a intra match practice

Kicking was pretty abysmal really, in the misty rain and breezy conditions

Nothing really stood out, maybe Sinclair and Nas off HB
Hill was busy
Bytel pretty good
All the mids - Crouch, Steele, Jones, Ross, Gresham were ok
Battle and Wilkie solid

Ball movement was pretty dysfunctional

Quite a few Sandy boys played 30, 46, 48, 49, 50

Not taking part
Coffield, Clark, King, Hayes, Marshall, Phillipou, Membrey, Allison, McKenzie, Connolly, Campbell, Hotton, Keeler,

How did the coaches perform BM?

It's concerning the continuing training reports of poor skills, do you think the coaches can improve the skills to AFL standard before R1?

AFL players enter the system with skills

Becoming a full time pro means their skill can improve in some areas, but generally skills are learned from 5-16yo

Thes guys spend 4 years in elite pathway programs before entering the AFL

Development coaches teach how to kick it - something they should be able to do already
Line coaches/coach teaches where to kick it

You wouldn’t see Ross Lyon instructing an elite footballer on how to complete a basic skill

How do we get players with AFL skills into the club?

Thanks B.M., conditions were scrappy, equalling the skills. I like that we are still practising quick decision making. Skills will only improve under pressure. As you rightly say, they all have skills but if that is not practised under pressure it will not stand up under the heat of AFL.

Excellent coaching, let's hope they continue putting the acid on the player's skill level under whatever heat they can generate.

I watched the vision of match sim put up by Saints TV and the mantra of using the corridor didnt seem that obvious. They do seem to be moving the ball quicker and I think it did rain so you wouldnt expect the skills to be fantastic.

Isn't AFL dominated by turnover? Isn't turnover the key (largest) % of opportunity for a team to score?

Unfortunately we have very few above average to elite ball users..NWM, Hill (not always), Sinclair, Billings…

It's a hard pill to swallow as a rusted on, but the reality is, and the whole footy world knows it, this list is very light on for skills.

I'm looking forward to getting to the practice match against the Dees and getting the first real look at what 2023 might have in store.

Whilst turnovers are ugly, the point of difference is where they happen & when they happen. At least we are now practising under pressure and appreciating the repercussions.

what causes turnovers?

is it skills or is it something else?

at the elite level of ANY sport taking advantage of your opponent making a mistake is how games are won.

in AFL it doesn't matter where the mistake is made on the ground, especially in a final, more often than not it means losing the game.

This has been our problem for at least the past 5 seasons. The effort has been good but all the good work gets destroyed by constant turnovers - handballs that hit the ground , passes that are wide or above the player leading for the ball, and of course missed scoring shots.

Contrast to how Collingwood played last year - fast play, taking high risk options that came off because of good skill execution. If our list could execute like they do, we would be top 4 easily. Need to find a few more players who can execute consistently well under pressure before we are serious challengers.

Hopefully the "new" list management team have been instructed to concentrate on elite ball users when adding to the playing list, otherwise, we may as well employ a BF poster as our list manager.

Yep the skills of Collingwood last year were right up there. There was no surprise they would make darcy Moore. Captain the guy a superstar. . They will be the ones to beat this year

I reckon Ross will improve our chances this season , he has a skilful list to work with
