Lockett 🆚 Dunstall

Post: # 1993907Post Sainternist »

The very first time the two legendary full forwards played against each other was in a pre-season game back in 1985 between St.Kilda and Queensland.

Enjoy, fellow Sainters! 🍿 👍

Both Great Full Forwards but I believe Plugger was the better comfortably.

If you look at the players delivering the ball to Dunstall you had Judge, Platten , Buckenara, Eade, Wallace , Hall etc.

We didn’t have those sort of players.

In addition in Plugger’s first six years at the club we won the wooden spoon five times ( 1983, 1984, 1985 , 1986 , 1988).

In a better team and with a little luck re injuries and suspensions , Plugger might have got close to 2,000 goals.

Greatest Saint of all time.

Not necessarily, he might have kicked less goals, too (in a better team)? ... I mean the goals might have been shared with other great players?

Dunstall and Lockett swapped (and plugger barracked for the hawks)

No doubt in my mind

Plugger would’ve kicked 1800+
Dunstall about 1000

As an example off the top of my head ...
The year Dunstall kicked 95, I think Brereton kicked about 65, Curren kicked 45 odd goals, Buckenera kicked 50 goals or so ... there were just too many goal-kickers and options.

That's 95 to Dunstall and 160 to 3 other options.

I wonder what % of ball that was delivered into the F50 went to Lockett?

They were both great players ...

Best footy days watching Plugger play, especially at Linton Street. But here is something to ponder, Dunstall would probably get a game in the modern era, absolutely he didn't kick as many goals as Plugger, but he was clearly in a team that had more avenues to goal, Plugger not so much.

Both pure entertainment of the best kind when it comes to Australian Rules.

If plugger got the delivery of the best team - possibly ever?!

Instead of (at times) the worst team ever

I’m sure he would’ve benefited greatly

Having a fwd line of

Brereton Hall Buckanara and Co

Might also have meant he couldn’t be double or triple teamed constantly

I know they had more goal kickers but they also kicked a lot more goals total.

Hands down plugger by some margin. I think what gets forgotten is that back in the 80's, only two or 3 games were televised each week, and as the Saints were not a top team, we weren't televised as much. Most non Saints fans just didn't get to see as much of Pluggers games in the Moorabbin days.

Imagine if Plugger played in the same formidable Hawthorn team Dunstall played for. He would have probably ended up with 2,000 career goals.

Lockett was the better full forward, by a long shot. But Dunstall is the second best full forward I’ve seen in my lifetime and there have been some good ones.
