Best Available 22 Rnd 1
Obviously we know some injuries and there will be more but what does round 1 look like then? Obviously the unseen players are a huge question mark so they are obviously a guess, probably as is the rest if truth be told.
Here is my guess, what do others look like?
B: Paton, Howard, Wilkie
HB: Coffield,Battle, Sinclair
C: Wood, Steele, Hill
HF: Billings, Owens, Higgins
F: Butler, Membrey, Gresh
Foll: Marshall, Crouch, Ross
Int from: Webster, Windy, Clark, NWM, Campbell, Sharman, Jones,
Inj: King, Hayes, Allison, McKenzie, Hotton, Keeler
Others: Stocker, Brynes, Cordy, Bytel, Phillipou, Adams, Van Es, Highmore, Connolly, McLennan, Heath, Peris.

You can now add train on player Josh Eyre to the injury list, he's done a hammy, seriousness to be determined.older saint wrote: ↑Mon 30 Jan 2023 5:30pm Obviously we know some injuries and there will be more but what does round 1 look like then? How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Best Available 22 Rnd 1
Am not suggesting this will be the team but this is what I’d like to see…
Paton, Howard, Wilkie
Coffield, Battle, NWM
Windhager, Steele, Hill
Higgins, Marshall, Wood
Gresh, Membrey, Coops
Campbell, Crouch, Sinclair
Int: Owens, Ross, Dmac/Bytel, Clark
EMG, Butler, Webster, Dmac/Bytel
Jones and Billings are back of the pack to start with as far as I’m concerned. Gets these guys to peak fitness and let them play 3-4 games at Sandy, demonstrate that they can run out games, meticulously complete their recovery/prep and actually stay on the park before they’re even up for consideration.
Bytel in if Dmac is hurt
No doubt Webster will start but to be honest… he’s a player that IMO we need to upgrade on.
Ross is an interesting one… def starting 22 but if his form drops back a bit then I’d rather direct games elsewhere

!
The ABCs for me Round One and a new coach and all - the big question is Grunt vs Class multiplied...but that assumes availability and fitness..
Availability
Crouch suspended? (or last year?)
Fitness Queries!!!
-MacKenzie is injured chronically from what I can tell. His concussion camouflages the fact that he has had at least two ongoing soft tissue concerns including a really bad calf.
-Ditto Billings - chronic back issues and hammies
-Ditto Jones - did another one recently
-Wood is not good right?
-Hayes who may be up and running at training by Round One, but match fit?
-Hunter Clark, how is he traveling?
-and Coff. Didn't he have a question mark on his fitness too?
If they hope these players are gonna come bursting out of the blocks without match miles in their legs and not do a hammy, they must have invented a new Tarzan juice!
And maybe they have been sipping on the magic potion.
On the basis of the above, I think it is gonna be a 'donut' team. Young class, old battle axes and no middle.
Players like Owens, Windy, NWM, Bytel, and Byrnes going to get more of an opportunity than a glimpse at the team on paper might indicate at first blush, mainly, because of this fitness issue.
I hope I am pleasantly surprised to see the likes of,
Wood
Hayes
Billings
Jones
Coffield
MacKenzie
fit for Round One.

Re: Best Available 22 Rnd 1
He was in my first take on my team. Pbly next one in.
I like him a little bit more as a second forward alongside King as opposed to taking the big key defender himself.
IMO pbly competing with Owens who by all accounts is killing it in training but despite his hype, hasn’t played as well as Coops has to date.
You know in hindsight… I might switch that up

Re: Best Available 22 Rnd 1
Was about to post a virtually identical team. Only change I'd make is Gresh to FP, Windy to the mids, Bytel to the bench and Butler EMG.nostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Mon 30 Jan 2023 11:05pm B: Paton, Howard, Wilkie

Re: Best Available 22 Rnd 1
He's way off AFL pace so can't see Lyon playing him if he isn't ready.
The only option Lyon has now is to cobble a forward line together with players who are capable of kicking a goal so that's why I think our talls are Wood and Members with a plus 1 from Marshall. It's also possible with Cordy creating an over supply of talls in the backline that the plus 1 comes from left of field out of the backline.
Then I think Gresh, Higgins, Buttler and Stocker are our next best goal kicking options.
Campbell is a break glass in emergency type and we definitely have broken the glass so he could somehow play a role in our avenues to goal but sheez its getting desperate

I don't see why people think Sharman is way of the pace.
The only times he has been tried forward, he has been a success.
He's now fitter than ever, a smart player, a beautiful kick, a good mark....what's not to appreciate?

Re: Best Available 22 Rnd 1
The way we are going with injuries you can remove “best” from the thread title.
As for Sharman he was successful in his first few games, not brilliant but good enough to hold his position. I’d say we play him due as he will now be in our best forward options and see how he goes again at afl level

Re: Best Available 22 Rnd 1
When it mattered he was way off the pace up forward in the games he played there last year. Meaning his first few games in 2021 were in dead rubbers and the opposition didn't put much work into him which is very common for players who get picked up late and played early. By the time 2022 came around opposition clubs worked out how to easily play him. Very common.Banger9798 wrote: ↑Tue 31 Jan 2023 9:37am I don't see why people think Sharman is way of the pace.

His fitness and endurance was a big issue in his games up forward last year, he had zero ability to defend and lock the ball in the forward line, so much so the opposition were scoring at will with attack created out of our forward line. He also has the turning circle of the titanic, I.e. severe lack of agility which impacts his ability in general play and said ability to help lock the ball in F50.
I'm guessing it's why Ratts thought he'd trial him behind the ball as an interceptor, mainly because it was desperate times at the selection table and partly because Sharman's one wood might work as an intercepting defender, can run fast in straight lines and can jump at the ball.
You need a whole lot more at AFL level than a good mark and kick...way more and that's why I think Lyon being the defensive type will find it hard to select him. But he has had a whole pre season to work on his weakness so let's see.

It's OK to occasionally share some thoughts of your own on footy rather than trolling. I'm hoping St.Byron convinces you to focus on footy. The Fireman wrote: ↑Tue 31 Jan 2023 9:40amnot peopleBanger9798 wrote: ↑Tue 31 Jan 2023 9:37am I don't see why people think Sharman is way of the pace.

i was plainly pointing out that most think Sharman is the correct option.Vortex wrote: ↑Tue 31 Jan 2023 10:00amIt's OK to occasionally share some thoughts of your own on footy rather than trolling. these were my thoughts and as far as StBryon is concerned I'm sure he's keeping a close eye on you.
you can now turn this into a multiple quoted post as you do..but I wont play ball.
