King
No sling.
Good sign
I had a full shoulder reco in 2017, 3 ligaments reattached and the bicep tendon, and a joint clean out.
Was in a sling for months and only had it out for rehab - hydrotherapy and physio
It has never been close to the same again, forced football retirement and unable to throw a cricket ball still!
Of over 10 major injuries and operations it’s been by far my worst!!!
From my experience I was worried about King’s recovery- as a contested marking key forward.
Hopefully
1/ his wasn’t as bad as mine - which looks likely
2/ he’s able to get strength back in his shoulder as
3/ his younger body recovers better

Re: King
According to Herald Sun headline on web King had a sling on
'Saints Track watch:
King in sling as Stocker pushes for list spot'
A pic from training has him not wearing it

Re: King
Not really,
It’s an injured joint - like any injury - they are never 100% the same again
The orthopaedic surgeon that did my shoulder does most AFL players shoulders, it’s his specialty, he only really does shoulders
Physio used to be the Socceroos physio and was for the 06 World Cup - he knew his s***
It was the fact that my shoulder was completely fkd and my age
King hopefully
Isn’t as bad
Definitely younger and fitter
Fingers crossed he makes a good recovery

Re: King
I highly doubt that you had the same dedicated rehab and resources as King has given that it’s his full time job. All good having a top flight surgeon and physio overseeing it but I highly doubt your experience would be anywhere near the same as King/AFL footballers. He’ll be right.

Re: King
This was supposed to be a positive thread about King
And giving my experience of the same injury
But yeah, good opportunity to have a dip at me.
If you do ask politely, I would tell you the footy I’ve played. Not sure of why it’s of any relevance or importance though
I don’t ever remember mentioning at what level I’ve ever played before??
It’s mainly other posters commenting on it…
I do remember actually playing a game or two for SS
Which created some commentary
Maybe that’s where the fascination comes from
Definitely ain’t me

Re: King
I think it is VERY encouraging that King only had the sling on while running. The extent of the injury will be a huge factor and the other thing to consider (besides age) is genetics, some people simply heal quicker than others. But the older you are, the longer the healing time, there is no way around that, and he is prime aged for a rapid recovery and best possible outcome.

Re: King
Did you play AFL? If so, my apologies. If not, we’ll then it’s pretty obvious that an amateur vs a professional would be starkly different journeys with regards to recovering from a shoulder reconstruction. I guess it’s not the most positive reading when it’s alluded to the fact that if he recovers to full fitness then he’d be going against the grain and would be considered lucky whereas broadly it’s just seen as an unfortunate speed bump that’s gonna delay his 2023.

Re: King
Have you ever had a reconstruction on any joint?
Physio 3 x per week
Hydro 2 x per week
Followed by a Weights program
Surgeon told me straight out (after an ankle reco) once operated on, joint will never get back to what it was, no matter what, just a fact. It’s a joint that’s been broken, therefore compromised. There is scar tissue that develops and eventually arthritis.

Re: King
In saying that
King’s damage may not have been that bad? And he’s young and fit!
Out of a sling in a month suggests it’s going well - point of the thread - not about me
Therefore he’s in good position to make a good recovery hopefully
It’s a complicated joint, easily damaged, even easier to re-injure.

In addition surgery technique and equipment is ever improving. BM’s was probably quite a few years ago.outside66 wrote: ↑Mon 09 Jan 2023 7:01pm Did you play AFL? If so, my apologies. Re: King
Just had my hip replaced , 2 months in & all going pretty good & surgeon expects me to be back to full mobility in 6 months & I'm 60. Obviously a hip is very different to a shoulder but Max is half my age & will have the best of the best rehab at his disposal so I'm bullish that he can make a full recovery pretty quickly .

Re: King
I had a shoulder reconstruction in 2011 and as well as the joint reconstruction they had to put 2 screws in the glenoid bone that I had broken as well.
I was lucky to get probably the best shoulder surgeon in NSW who does most of the rugby league players and has done a few cricket players too.
B.M I know what it’s like. The recovery and physio was hell but I got 95% of the mobility and strength back. I suspect my physio was a sadist. I would not wish it on anyone. When I see a shoulder pop out I feel physically sick.

Re: King
He’s not having a shoulder replacement
He getting a broken one fixed
After a car accident, would you prefer a new car as a replacement or the old one fixed?
But agree
I hope Max recovers well and has no further problems with it

Re: King
Happy feet
Did your shoulder freeze at any point?
Mine was torture in recovery- sat out 2018 completely and then retired. I seem to have mobility but have lost power and confidence in my shoulder?
It was the third part of my body reconstructed (ankle and knee also)
It was the worst of the three and not much fun at all.

Re: King
I did not get frozen shoulder - I was lucky. Frozen shoulder happens a bit post reconstruction and it makes a difficult recovery worse. I did not lose power but I understand the confidence part. I went skiing about 18 months after the operation and thought to myself wtf am I doing. When I survived my first stack I was much better.B.M wrote: ↑Mon 09 Jan 2023 11:10pm Happy feet

Re: King
I think the complication with Kingy recovering from shoulder surgery will be the type of player he is, and the use of his upper body to be a key marking forward- his shoulders need to be in top nick. A smaller running style player may not be impacted as much after shoulder surgery. I wish him all the best, as I know a few guys who have had this kind of surgery with the best available medical support, and tell me their shoulders recovered mostly, but were never the same.
