Well that sux. On a plus Sharman and Hayes will be given a perfect opportunity to show their value. Or maybe Ross will have a plan in place by round one. If not well it’s a good season to suck in as it’s meant to be a superdraft
Hayes won't be back until approx round 5
True but king won’t be back to approx round 12 give or take a few weeks. So Hayes will have his chance just not straight away.
Trying to stay positive is all. Good news is that we may find a hidden gem out of this.

Nick didn’t do a shoulder
He cracked his collarbone
That’s only a 5-6 week injury
Question
Why is Max King still skinny (baby giraffe as someone said)
He’s is in his 5th preseason, he’s been training at Moorabbin since 2018.
His lower body is massive - Upper body is skinny as fk
He's clearly too skinny.
What are the statistics on complete shoulder reconstructions for AFL players per season and in tbe off season?
Who was the last player to have this type of injury in a training session in December?
Lyon has his work cut out for him to raise the standards.
Patrick Cripps had a shoulder reconstruction over the offseason after 2020, not from a training injury but had needed it for basically the whole covid season. He played 20 games the next year, was not at his best but still pretty good that year. His was done at the end of september so was good to train by January and played round 1.
Also, I have stood next to both King boys, Max is broader across the shoulders than I thought he was from watching from afar. Ben (pre knee injury) looked more developed in the upper body and had more bulky arms and chest, which I always thought was a reflection of being able to play in his draft year while Max couldn't.

An irrelevant reference point: Cripps injured himself from being the sole competitive beast in a crap midfield/team.
Has anyone ever in the history of the game required a shoulder reconstruction for a marking mishap during a training session in December...is it another first for St Kilda?
you're certainly not a "first for StKilda" Vortex
your negativity is off the chart... understandably a "StKilda thing"
do you know how he sustained the injury ? if not maybe give it a rest.
injuries can occur during the most innocuous circumstances.
Max may have come down from a great height, gang smashed , illegal holding of the arm..whatever
despite your obvious stirring Vortex it is just another bit of bad luck for us, we know you are a Ratten fanboy but we now have RTB who is more capable of turning this situation into a positive.

How is it irrelevant if a player had the same surgery in an off season at around the same age? It gives some possible indication to recovery and impact on the player.
I don't understand what "Lyon has his work cut out for him to raise the standards" means without any context of the injury apart from it was a marking contest. It wasn't match sim so I would assume it was general marking drills that are done at pretty much every training session at any club.

Could the hidden gem be Van es he is a big unit and ready to play lets hope.

Can't replace Max but for me the best option would be Cooper Sharman initially. Only around 193cm but he's got a great leap on him, great mark and great kick, strikes me as a natural full forward
Forget this business about him playing down back, the kid's a forward
This
Saints fans were excited when Cooper debuted in 2021 because we finally saw a guy who had exquisite timing and knew when to lead
How good is it to have a FF that presents and demands the footy?
Natural full forwards aren't born. They need opportunities to practice and refine their skills. Sharman has shown us he is also an accurate set shot for goal
Lets just make the most of a bad situation , sure it's not ideal but we have to deal with it. Injuries happen to key players at every club & we are no exception . IMO we need to focus on what we can control & work with what we have

Windy, NWM, Owens were all AFL-ready by some amazing fluke.
Normally, at our club, guys don't earn their spot until 2-3 yrs in the Zebs.
Byrnes, Bytel, Connolly just some recent examples.
Historically, it's been 17 y.o. with teen bodies having to develop muscle, fitness, form, etc takes a couple of years.
Don't get excited over Van Es just yet

I wouldn’t cut off our nose to spite our face. We will get by until max returns but I wouldn’t play guys out of position and hamper their development until he returns. Ie backs play as backs especially battle who has found his niche position
