What’s the one you saw?silverhalo wrote: ↑Thu 24 Nov 2022 6:48pmI'd be more than happy if we picked up Hewitt, his highlight reel shows off his power, speed and tenacity - saw him interviewed and he has an old head on young shoulders, very mature and VERY driven to succeed. You're half way there with those qualities...Sanctorum wrote: ↑Thu 24 Nov 2022 11:03am I'd be very happy if they pick up Elijah Hewett, has that x-factor about him, don't mind him fancying himself, shouldn't every player? Buddy Franklin fancied himself as a kid but let his footy do the talking, reckon Hewett is in the same mould.
Fact is that in the 2021 draft, only 4 players, including Marcus Windhager at pick 47, played 18 or more games in their first season. The "pre-draft order" as such is not always right, it's like a blind date, you're never guaranteed to end up with a hot blond/hunk!

Josh Weddle is a big chance for our 2nd pick - we are trying to package up picks to get higher as Josh may go high teens range. Roughy a big fan - this came from his dad. Saints have interviewed Josh many times. Essendon and Dogs also keen.

So is he really a 192cm defender?

Be an interesting selection given the amount of similiar sized defenders we have. Surely other defenders like Phllips or Van Es who can play the full back role are .ore suitable?

NWM wasn't a surprise at 10
Clark and Coffield expected at 7 and 8
Billings was considered by most as a top 3
Gresham at 15 (or whatever it was) was expected range.
Acres was considered the right player for his pick.
But not sure where the hyperbole over first round picks comes from? Seems a bit overstated
Ben Long was a bit early at 25
McCartin the obvious mistake, but most had him going top 3
The bigger mistake was a while back trading first round picks for two later picks in the hope it works out:The Spencer White Syndrome

Hearing similar on the grape vine West Coast not using either of their first 2 picks on Hewett hoping for him to slide to pick 20. That may change if Ginbey goes before their pick at 9 . Interesting times aheadsaintsRrising wrote: ↑Thu 24 Nov 2022 1:20pm I think WCE might hope to get him with their third pick (20).

Brad Howard at our second round like a decade ago has stuck.
Then there was 1 or 2 3rd rounders that people thought wouldn’t be drafted at all.

Share the love....Billings, Hunter and Coff have also been very underwhelming selections in terms of players cable of being in a premiership side....ironically Paddy is the only player who has come the closest to proving himself as a premiership player.

It’s a bit of a beat up surely…Yes, Ross did interview Hewitt but I dare say he and the recruiting team would interview a lot of players.
We may try to get a pick in the teens to try & snare a slider.

Re: Draft Target
As I say every year at this time avoid the interstaters and take a Victorian / local.
Eliminate the go home factor at least.
I near spewed up with all the speculation about NWM wanting to go home and hope it doesn’t happen but clearly both SA teams had nothing
to trade left but I bet Adelaide are in his families ears all year until he resigns .

Re: Draft Target
I also read this.
And it 2025 we'll swap Busslinger and our first rounder to WC for MacKenzie
Busslinger looks very good, but he's 196cm and 82kg (wringing wet).
By the time he's ready to be a senior key defender in 3-5 years what is the chance he's done a Jamie Cripps?
I know take the best rated available but if there is not much in it a local kid makes much more sense.

Dont want Busslinger IMO he is completely over rated. McKenzie or another vaailable midfielder - Humphrey, Ginbey, Tsatas or Hollands would be my preference.

Re: Draft Target
With our first 2 picks we should draft 2 mids and the last 2 with should get 1 KPP and a ruckman.
If we use 3 picks 2 mids and 1 KPP with 1 pick in the rookie draft a ruckman.
We lost 3 bigs last season in Ryder, Leinert who should still be on the list and Joyce with only Cordy as a replacement.
We didn't have a abidance of bigs anyway so we need to have back up if Hayes and Sharman do not pan out jury still out on them.

Re: Draft Target
James Van Es is the defender we want. If we can get him with pick 47 (or whatever it will be by then) then we have done well. He will take years to come good but plan for the future plus well worth the risk.

Doubt it would take years for Van Es to make it..he’s already 99kg’s @ 18 years old!!DJ Higgins wrote: ↑Fri 25 Nov 2022 4:20pm James Van Es is the defender we want. Re: Draft Target
You could use the same analogy for Ben King with the go home factor and the team he followed as a kid and having Max here at the saints but I bet he will not leave GC.wally wrote: ↑Fri 25 Nov 2022 8:17am As I say every year at this time avoid the interstaters and take a Victorian / local.

Don't get me wrong I would love to have him and I really think now is the time when GC have coverage for him and he will struggle to get back in the side when he comes back also his contract is almost up so we should make him our priority next year.
Otherwise forget it if he signs a long term contract we will not have much chance to lure him south.

Re: Draft Target
If there was a ‘Ben King’ available you’d pick him regardless of where he was from… same with a Connor Rozee.
But as I see it, there’s about 6 kids all about level from pick 5-13
My view is that if it’s hard to seperate them… go the local.
My pick is definitely McKenzie
Think Tsatsas, Phillipou and Clarke will be gone
Ginbey I would take if McKenzie was also gone
In the hope that Tsatsas or Phillipou were available at pick 10 - I’d take them
Not interested in Clarke - he’ll be at Geelong in two years anyway

Seems a very safe bet.

Re: Draft Target
If these top 10 mids in the draft are as good as it seems they are, why didn't we bring all our future draft fortunes into this draft and do the rebuild in 2 DRAFTS (last yr + this year).
Or are they not good enough to justify that?

Re: Draft Target
Draft over two nights again!!
Why don’t they just have a night for each pick. There’s just enough time before round 1.
Idiots.
I wish they would stop this opportunistic nonsense.
