Geez that's a generalisation. I think Ratten got it wrong playing him in the backline. He has no defensive skills and it stood out a mile.
I also think that is wrong. (saying Hill is cooked) based on what we've seen so far. Of course, going forward now, who knows?

But, Hill helped us win - really helped us - several of those games in the first half of the year that set us up for the so-called 'top four push'.

HB is the least defensive position on the ground

If you’ve got a player who doesn’t defend, HB is generally where they go

Last time Hill played wing for a period he was poor

Hopefully he’s got a bit fitter

And we have a gameplan that suits wingmen
…and that he’ll hit the ball hard, as well as getting a bit of defensive and tackling aggression.

Not successfully in most instances though…

Unless they’re a freak whose offensive ability is greater than the liability that comes with never bothering to man up… tends not to work so well. You could have a freak like an Aussie Jones that actually managed it more often than not but outside of that, the better ones tend to have more of a balance between the two roles.

Sinclair does alright going both ways. Also oe of the reasons I’m a bit more bullish on a guy like Coffield than most.

Do you reckon tackling and aggression is why we got Hill?

We had 8 years of Hill before he came to StK

We knew exactly what we were getting - an outside finisher

Problem wasn’t with what he didn’t do at Hawthorn and Freo which was crack in

It was that he put on 5kg around the gut and lost his ‘1 wood’
Run and carry

All players have strengths and weaknesses. He is NOT a contested ball beast… nor was Aussie Jones

BM, sometimes I swear you’re having conversations with yourself… you address these points that no one made and ignore what was said. It makes having a discuss with you a very bizarre experience.

Where did I say tackling and aggression is why we got Hill… heck comment wasn’t even directed at Hill but rather the position of HBF.

The comment was if you’re going to play as a playmaker HBF with little accountable, you need to be more damaging than the guy you’re checking.

More often than not, AJ was however few players can pull that off and IMO most that don’t work hard both ways get exposed badly quickly.

Not sure how you decided that 🤷‍♂️
Once the oppo has run it past our wing into our defence, our HB needs to have picked up a loose player and work to repel.

Was replying to St Kev

Who suggested he needed to hit the ball hard and tackling and aggression

Not sure Hill plays like that

HB least defensive position in the ground?
Err no but let’s assume you’re right it still requires on occasion defensive capability 1 out with players
Not Hills string suit imo

As does every position on the ground

Modern footy

Hf’s push up the ground - HBs hold their position and primary job is to run and carry from d50

I’d suggest when you’re a defender in a dedicated defensive position on the ground the expectation is you will undoubtedly feel far more pressure to defend/save goals than elsewhere on the ground. Just a hunch.
It’s why Sinclair is so good at the role- he can be offence and defence
Suggest Brad has only 1 gear and naturally runs 1 way and Ross knows his “offence” qualities outweighs anything he can provide down back

You’d be wrong then

HFs push up - that’s why their called high HFs - HBs hold

That’s why they are called spares. Primary job of a spare is to hold.

There are times when a team will hold 6 forwards - but generally they’ll run with 5 or even 4 stay at home forwards and push one or two up.

And once again Marts on a tangent rant!
Thank you for that info Mart
BACK on topic…
Brad Hill lacks defensive qualities to be an effective HBF
Ross Lyon appears to agree
Why is he wrong?
Discuss.

I think a lot of talk about wingman is fanciful and nostalgia. I don’t even think wing is a position anymore. It seems that players drift from F50 to D50 on the outside and are called wingman, but many start in other positions, even as on ballers.

That said, I’ve heard Geelongs Mitch Duncan went from wing to HB this year. I haven’t watched enough to really tell. Did anyone notice/hear this about Duncan, and if so, can you suggest why Duncan was moved?

Because opposition wingman just love a game where they don't get tackled by one way opponents.

By way of comparison.

Ed Langdon MFC*: Disposals, average; Kicks, above average; Handballs, average; marks, above average, tackles, 1.3, below average;

B. Hill St KFC*: Disposals, above average; Kicks, above average; Handballs, above average; marks, average, tackles, 1.8 average;

Langdon a "star"? Brad constantly vilified. Go figure. Racist? skewed expectations? perception bias? just dumb? herd mentality? media driven?

* from respective club's websites. MFC have featured in finals for last two years, dominant midfield combos; St KFC a middling team, not so dominant midfield.

It is some kinda cognitive bias says Dr. Grambeau.

But as fans we are entitled to be morons.

Just tick the boxes.

1: Fams pent up frustration, chip on shoulder needs outlet : tick
2: Outsider with flags, B&F, AA, and a huge contract enters successless-poverty stricken environment: tick
3. From Westrern Australia (perceived to be, doesn't matter in reality) : tick
4: Hatred (former) of Freo and Ross Lyon around here : tick
5. Squeezing out selection opportunities for 'real men' like (fill-in-th-blank) : tick
6: Can't criticise for fear of racism charge and cancel button=more frustration: tick
7. Players ignoring him, leading to a disastrous PR choice by Ratts to say it is 'not fair', causing more backlash: tick
8. Outside player gets bumped off ball easily (conclusion, wimp, lazy, selfish, precious) : tick
9. Has low possession games, turns ball over (same as anyone, but see 1-8) : tick
