That's not particularly fair if you are talking about Newnes - he gave them good GOP service (as he did for us). Far from being a "stinker". That's a very cheap shot.

I've mentioned this before Newnes was a pretty handy courageous player for us but unfortunately copped a nasty head knock & was different player IMO after that . Played some decent games at Carlton but a shadow of the player he was.

Re: Liam Stocker training with the Saints .
Didn’t Newnes play 200?!
How many ‘stinkers’ play 200
As a wingman/HB - early on - he was a solid performer - very tough!
Last 50 games with us as a defensive HF were ordinary- but that’s where players go to get delisted!

Very true B.M., but Newnes ended up being the poster boy for that era of St Kilda, the list, the Administration and the choaching.
His early years were promising but then he got well and truly St Kildered. I'm not sure any other clubs would have allowed him that many games besides St Kilda and Carlton.

Re: Liam Stocker training with the Saints .
I've seen him a few times at VFL level.
He has all the physical attributes, height, speed, strength.
The down side he can win the ball but appears to give it off by hand rather than use his speed and strength to take the game on.
He can win the ball but won't hurt you with it.
A taller quicker version of Jack Bytel but not as tough and his hands are as good in close.
No from me.

Re: Liam Stocker training with the Saints .
Well....at least one stinker played 200.
He had some good games, a lot of average to decent games with a heap of poor performances. A LOT.
2016 & 17 were his best years for us and then he faded away. He was a victim of a system that couldn't develop youth. 2012 he should've run...but he was allowed to stagnate and what could've been a true club player with great games was left to his own devices and stagnated like most of the young lads.
I can't call him a champion and say we let a legend get away....he MAY have BEEN decent but when he was delisted he was no gem.
Yet....
To gather 200 games speaks volumes about celebrating mediocrity within our culture...

Re: Liam Stocker training with the Saints .
Didn’t he play at Carlton as well!
I think your linking of Newnes and our results is
A throw away line!
Not very accurate
He was no superstar but he wasn’t a dud either
Just a GOP - all teams (even premiership teams) have them.
Can’t have 22 champions

Re: Liam Stocker training with the Saints .
I bought an Armitage pin on and a McCartin one, amongst others, never considered a Newnes but thought he was foolishly brave gratuitously fronting that uber agro Port ruckman in Adelaide and getting his jaw broken for his trouble in one of his first few games. Thought,
that guy can't duck and can't pick who to irritate. Will never get to 50 games. His badge may be a collector's item now.

Newnes was good, got injured and came back average and appeared to just do enough, rather than hunt the ball, as he did earlier in his career.

Re: Liam Stocker training with the Saints .
Premiership medallions don’t make players champions
Tim Notting was no champion
Nor was Beau MCDonald
Were McRae, Hart, Brad Scott just role players
They were an exceptional team… but Black, Voss, Aker, Lappin we’re the jewels in their crown.
Brown was only 19
Lynch was 33

I was surprised not to see Stocker in the training pics today.

I thought he was the one far right in one of the pics?

Maybe tony74 might tell us how Stocker is tracking.
Tones is an ITK but perhaps some things aren't communicated outside of the immediate coaching group- on a need to know basis.
Just saying that tony74, in his role, might know a lot, but there's possibly a lot that he's unaware of

That’s fair enough
He’s probably nominated for the draft

Remember a little while ago Tony commenting - and so it begins - when an assistant (Mcsomething) decided to go to Mildura to "spend time with the family".WellardSaint wrote: ↑Wed 23 Nov 2022 2:33pmMaybe tony74 might tell us how Stocker is tracking.

Perhaps only St. Pav picked up on the significance of Tony's aside.
I think Tony knows heaps.
