Re: 1988
Classic game & Jack Daniels had a pretty good game but IMO he will go down as the worst kick that ever pulled on a Saints jumper but still had a decent career

Three weeks later Plugger broke his ankle and our finals hopes were done
Daniels looked like a Brownlow Medallist in this game - apart from his kicking lol

Re: 1988
I drove down to Geelong for that one on my learners but luckily Dad drove back so got to drink plenty of beers, one of my fave ever wins because I'd hardly ever seen us win at Kardy Park up until then, I remember Nicky hitting Plugger with one of the greatest passes I've ever seen, good times...
The future's so bright I've got to wear shades...

Re: 1988
Thanks for posting mate.
My thoughts,
Ablett was a thug.
Daniels wouldn't get a game these days with his shocking kicking, but boy, he could play.
Forgot how good Gotch and Kenny were.
Have a blank when it comes to Evans. Have no recollection of him at all.
Where was Banger?
Ian Muller was a bad loss.
Maggots were just as incompetent back then.
Skills were pretty good considering the state of the ground.

Re: 1988
Banger didn't debut until later in the season. He debuted against Footscray at the Western Oval in the wet.
Yeah, likewise re: Evans. Was it Glynn Evans? I remember we had someone with a name like that in the 80s.
Just looked it up. Tony Evans. Played 30 games for us before transferring to Footscray

Because you are not allowed to celebrate anything positive when it comes to St Kilda - only languish in our crappiness. Even when we win our next Flag - it will still be "Talk to me when we have a three-peat"Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Sat 12 Nov 2022 10:55amWhy do you continually ask irrelevant questions you either know the answer to or can easily find out the answer to?

I think you have all missed the nuance of B.M’s rhetorical question. He is drawing your attention to the fact that despite this great win, we finished as wooden spooners again.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sat 12 Nov 2022 2:56pmBecause you are not allowed to celebrate anything positive when it comes to St Kilda - only languish in our crappiness. Read between the lines fellow Saintsational members.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Re: 1988
Correct
We celebrate what Hawthorn thinks is a given
I love StK
But have very little to be positive about… I wasn’t alive in 66
2004-2011 we won as many HA games as any other club. Still didn’t capitalise. And in the process fkd up the following 10 years

Tony "Skills" Evans
Was the nic that we afforded him
Moreso cause he showed flashes of not having any
Probably a good guy though

Re: 1988
Between 2004-2006 we won more matches than any other club.
Same as the1965-73 era.
I think now that Lyon is returning, we will be a lot more consistent.

Re: 1988
I got the point. I just find the question of where we finished on the ladder 35 years ago not relevant at all.happy feet wrote: ↑Sat 12 Nov 2022 7:01pmI think you have all missed the nuance of B.M’s rhetorical question. Read between the lines fellow Saintsational members.
We completely relied on one player in that era and when he was injured, we were useless. It's not a surprise our season plummeted after he was injured.
We are no longer that team.

Re: 1988
In 88 plugger played 8 games . We won two of them .
So I doubt if he stayed fit we would have played finals . Maybe we wouldn't have finished on the bottom .

Re: 1988
Even though we finished bottom in 1988, we were relatively competitive in the majority of games.
1979-1986 were barren years. A lot worse than 2013 onwards.

Re: 1988
Great games by Daniels, Sheldon, Kourkoumelis and Elphinstone. “Eel” was a very good player in his time.
No surprises that when the game needed to be won it was Lockett and Winmar who produced the magic. Plugger seven goals on an absolute bogmire … what a freak he was.
No surprises either that Greg Burns tried to remove Ablett’s head.
Really good win that. It’s never been easy down there.
