Big boots to fill - Rowan Marshall
Says Damien Barrett
With Paddy Ryder retiring and Ro taking the number 1 ruck position will have to step up?!
I think he’s forgot 2019 when Rowan Marshall was runner up B&F as the number one
Or even his games for StK the many number of times Paddy was unavailable
Eg vs Hawthorn
30 disposal
35 hit outs
9 marks
It would be nice if he had someone to chop him out, but I’m pretty sure he can be a number 1 ruck
Barrett has no fkn clue

Re: Big boots to fill - Rowan Marshall
It is arguable that Ratts did not manage Marshall particularly well or utilise him in the forward line as a
sparingly used weapon. Could have been dangerous as forward for short periods. Discounting Campbell when Paddy was out might have been a mistake.

Re: Big boots to fill - Rowan Marshall
Fantastic around the ground, but I would rate his actual ruck work as below average. Hopefully can take a step up in that department.

Re: Big boots to fill - Rowan Marshall
You are right (poster questioning Marshall’s use as a forward under Ratts), but I don’t think Ratts was convinced Marshall was a good forward and tBH, are any of you?
Our forward line was pretty dysfunctional anyhow, so it’s hard to judge. I thought Paddy was the better forward, but I can’t judge.
Anyway, I think he did kick 13 goals in one season before his back went. (Or was that after?)
I think Paddy retired prematurely- I suspect he was pushed, certainly wanted to go on as late as July judging by his comments.
If the big Marshall is not playing injured, laboring with a bad back and bad hammies of other muscles that often get strained when the back goes, he’ll be good, maybe great.
If he has to battle every week, play limited minutes, (because I doubt they can limit effort if your job is to leap every two minutes - and everyone can see) I think he’ll remain a utility type Ruckman- dare I say, like the great Shane Grambeau (whom he no doubt models himself upon)

I somehow think ROMA's has "The Great" Shane Grambeau covered!shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Wed 09 Nov 2022 12:59pm I think he’ll remain a utility type Ruckman- dare I say, like the great Shane Grambeau (whom he no doubt models himself upon)
In Shanes 51 games for the Saints, he kicked 39 goals. [In his VFL career of 111 games, he managed to kick 47 goals.]
Rowan Marshall has so far played 86 AFL games, all in the RWB, kicking 45 goals so far in his career.
Let's hope ROMA continues to avoid modelling himself to closely on "The Great" Shane Grambeau!

Re: Big boots to fill - Rowan Marshall
Marshall played forward quite a bit when Ryder played
He was largely ineffectual
He is clearly a ruckman, his ruck work at stoppage is great, but not as good at centre bounce - doesn’t jump.
Around the ground, he would be in the top couple of ruckmen in the AFL

Stanley Laurel/ Oliver Hardy (fat and skinny) Stan and Ollie.

Re: Big boots to fill - Rowan Marshall
If we are to take a step forward next year a big factor will be if we have proper support for Marshall in the form of a second ruck. As great as he is he will need a proper chop out. If Heath or Hayes fulfil that role we will be in good shape
