Re: Ethan Phillips
Now we have Cordy & already have Highmore do we really need another tall intercept back man? I'm not totally against it but would prefer to get more potentially skilled mid's with those picks

Re: Ethan Phillips
Will he be there in the 40's or to even rookie? The AFL article talks him up, I like his commitment but Srobolak(?) has never instilled me with confidence but even a broken clock...

Re: Ethan Phillips
Before we got Cordy i would have said yes, he's definitely worth a look, now i'd like the club to use that pick on a potential Key Forward to support King.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Nah , more importantly, I'd like to use that pick on a potential Ruck/forward to support ROMA!

Re: Ethan Phillips
We need a forward - ruck (support)
Marshall is a very good ruckman
A very average forward
He needs to be in the ruck 70-80% of the time

Re: Ethan Phillips
How often has St Kilda played Rowan as our Full Forward? I reckon if RoMa was the No. 1 go to forward he'd be a very good forward.
I'm not talking about the support act to Josh Bruce or Max King.
I reckon if he had consistent games for a whole season playing 80% as our FF he'd do ok

Thing is with Roma is that they have never had him trained to play as a key forward. ie He does not do the leading patterns (mind you under Rats neither was King!!!).
Roma mainly just pushes forward.
If he trained as a forward then who knows,
However given our list he is our best option to play No 1 ruck. So play him there. Also Roman is a beast as a follower and a real advantage to us.

Re: Ethan Phillips
Where do you think he played when Ryder was in the ruck?
You probably didn’t notice because he did not do much

Re: Ethan Phillips
Starting 22 we have Hayes and If you're thinking of looking to the draft for a developing ruck/forward it is worth remembering we already have M Heath on the list and in terms of injury cover we have Campbell.
Think there is still an argument for another key back to cover any injuries.
195cm+ key backs
Howard
Cordy
Other key backs
Wilkie
Battle

Re: Ethan Phillips
We do have Hayes but he is recovering from an ACL injury, when the season starts he will only be 11 months into his recovery, i doubt he'll play in the first month.nostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Sun 30 Oct 2022 10:38am Starting 22 we have Hayes and If you're thinking of looking to the draft for a developing ruck/forward it is worth remembering we already have M Heath on the list and in terms of injury cover we have Campbell.

Then it's Sharman or bust. When the final list lodgement occurs we'll know how Ross views it.

Re: Ethan Phillips
Not all those key defenders will get a game
Webster/Paton will play lock down
Sinclair and Coffield will play as running backs
That’s 3 defenders
Leaving only 3 talls
Howard - Wilkie - Battle/Cordy
7th defender
Either
Clark, Hill, Jones

Isaac Keeler would be a great Ryder replacement..we would likely need to get up the draft order a bit!

Re: Ethan Phillips
We have a developing ruck - Heath
Not sure we need a developing ruck
Imo - ruck situation
#1 - Marshall
Support - Hayes
Back Up - Campbell
Developing - Heath
Possibly need one more Forward Ruck

Re: Ethan Phillips
Agree with this.
Campbell is there for if Hayes is injured and if Ross absolutely wants second ruckman a d Campbell is unavailable then we can always turn to heath.
Imo minimal benefit in using a draft pick on a young ruckman unless they are seen to be elite or able to play right now.

I don't disagree with the idea of signing a ruckman- I do disagree with using a draft pick on one when we have a developing one on the list already.

Re: Ethan Phillips
I had a deep look into our ruck recruiting history a while ago and drew the conclusion that you’re simply better trading a super star ruck and wearing the cost.nostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Sun 30 Oct 2022 3:15pmbobmurray wrote: ↑Sun 30 Oct 2022 1:23pmWe do have Hayes but he is recovering from an ACL injury, when the season starts he will only be 11 months into his recovery, i doubt he'll play in the first month.nostalgicsaint wrote: ↑Sun 30 Oct 2022 10:38am Starting 22 we have Hayes and If you're thinking of looking to the draft for a developing ruck/forward it is worth remembering we already have M Heath on the list and in terms of injury cover we have Campbell.

When you look at what we’ve tried over 20 years or the strike rate is very poor especially considering what we’ve sunk into it.

There’s only a few elite ruckmen in the AFL
We have a good one
Do not have to waste resources on getting another

Re: Ethan Phillips
Not so sure we're bad at recruiting rucks, we got rid of both of this years GF rucks in Stanley and Hickey as well as the Hawthorn captain and premership ruckman McEvoy.
Perhaps we're just bad at recognizing a capable ruckman.

What do we do if we come up against KPF 200cm+ does wilkie at 191cm take them we have Dougal but as we saw in 22 we were exposed with only
battle at 193cm if one was out.
Highmore is also 193 cm and does not play as a key back he doesn't have the build more of a HBF so with cordy that will help but there is also use for another KPP/Ruck.
We don't know if heath will make it yet do we pin all our hopes on him with out anyone else.
Oscar Adams may be the player we wont but he has back trouble and hopefully will be able to play out the 23 season, he would be very handy at 198cm but still only a kid at 19.

Re: Ethan Phillips
Very few key forwards got hold of us in ‘22
Mainly thanks to Battle and Wilkie
Howard was exposed a few teams, but Wilkie swapped with him and put the clamps on.
Battle - rarely beaten
I think he had the best success rate in the AFL for not being beaten in a one on one.
Don’t worry about cms
Worry about competitiveness

The number 1 ruck position is his and I agree that he's best suited as a follower... so hopefully he shines and so does the team in 2022saintsRrising wrote: ↑Sun 30 Oct 2022 8:52amScollop wrote: ↑Sat 29 Oct 2022 11:13pmHow often has St Kilda played Rowan as our Full Forward? Re: Ethan Phillips
Fisher McAsey is one player I’d consider taking as a rookie.
#6 draft pick so talent was there in draft year.
A few injuries and never settled at Adelaide.
198cm athletic key defender, this will upset a few here but a Dougal Howard clone. Ex Sandy Dragons so a local.
Not sure what went wrong in Adelaide but surely worth considering as a rookie option.
Not that it makes any difference but as pointed out by Kossifan his dad played one game for us in 83.

Re: Ethan Phillips
At the end of 2021 9 players were cut from our list.. 7 of those were talls.
We drafted in Adams & Heath & traded in Cordy, still leaves us short!!
