Re: “Lyon’s bold move to land Saints draft bonanza” Herald Sun??
St Kilda wants to strike a trade to improve its hand at next month's national draft so it can bring in three or four quality teenagers to learn from new coaches Ross Lyon, Lenny Hayes and Robert Harvey.
The Saints continued their time warp on Tuesday when Lyon brought dual Brownlow Medallist Harvey back to the club as an assistant coach for the second time.
Lyon has told club bosses he was happy the Saints kept picks No. 9, 28 and 32 in the draft and now they are hoping to speak to rivals about executing a swap of picks to move further up the order.
Sydney holds picks 14 and 17 and — like the Saints — had been hoping to move into the top six selections.
The Swans are looking at the 2022-2023 drafts as one block and, without access to a top-six pick this year, they could be open to giving up either No. 14 or 17 for a future pick.
The Saints would love to secure either a bonus early pick this year or to move No. 28 or 32 further up the order.
They offered No. 9 and Hunter Clark to North Melbourne for No. 3, but that was rejected by the Roos.
Clubs are free to swap picks until November 15 and then again live at the draft.
The Saints were thrilled with the energy generated from last year's draft haul of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitch Owens and Marcus Windhager.
Windhager, in particular, caught the eye as a tagger who should evolve into a powerful midfielder.
Lyon has taken a “blank canvas” approach to the Saints and reckons a couple of good drafts could turn them around quickly.
But Lyon also believes that with all clubs operating under the same salary cap and soft cap it is more important to get the framework right to maximise results.
He held talks with veteran recruiter Tony Elshaug, former goalsneak and GWS assistant Adam Schneider and footy legend Leigh Matthews in recent weeks about his possible return to senior coaching.
Harvey has replaced Brendon Lade (Western Bulldogs) as a line coach and the Saints are understood to still searching for one more development coach to join Damian Carroll and Jake Batchelor (VFL).
Former Saint Brendon Goddard is eager to get back into football and is likely to be considered by Lyon, depending on the restraints in the soft cap.
Goddard has spent the past 12 months asking questions of clubs and would be open to a coaching role at any club.
Securing Goddard along with Lyon, Harvey and Hayes — and with Nick Dal Santo coaching the AFLW team — would complete St Kilda’s throwback to the 2007-2011 era.
“While we understand for Saints fans the idea of Rob and Lenny back together is extremely nostalgic, it should also be very exciting given their coaching expertise,” Saints boss Simon Lethlean said.
The Saints have to payout six months of sacked coach Brett Ratten’s contract, which will be counted in the cap.
Lyon brought Harvey back to the Saints in 2011 as midfield coach. Harvey then applied for the senior job when Lyon defected to Fremantle after that season.
But when the Saints chose Scott Watters instead, Harvey left for Collingwood. He served as caretaker coach for nine games (2-7) when Nathan Buckley was sacked last year.
Harvey joined Hawthorn as midfield coach in 2022 but he had flagged his possible return to St Kilda with Hawks bosses in recent days.
It means the 51-year-old will coach at a third AFL club in as many years in 2023.

I wonder who they are interested in?
Is it higher in the draft like top 5 or do they want 28 to move into the teens for an injured slider like Brayden George.
I believe we having spoken to Ziggy Toledo as a possible rookie.
192cm medium forward who is very good at ground level and decent overhead with real foot skills.
Has always been a very good player but has never had the fitness or work ethic of the professional advanced young kids.
Coached by a former saint who has put a good word in for him, plenty of upside if he gets in a professional environment.

I hope we don't do anything silly like next year's first for a pick in the teens this year.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Wed 26 Oct 2022 9:27am I wonder who they are interested in?

Even with Ross on board, next year's pick is likely to be top 10 in a better draft and a possible trade for Ben King if possible.

I thought we also have 4 picks 9,28,32,47 not 3 could we bundle up 32,47 for a late 1st rounder like a 17-18
Must keep our first 3 picks next year for hopefully Bing?

The only way to move up this years draft would be offer future draft picks as unless you need points for Father/Sons there is little sense in trading down.
The only team that would be a points glutton this year is Brisbane but they have stacked up with second and third round picks already.
The only other thing you may consider is swapping an early first round pick for a couple of later first round picks but we only have one first rounder.
Nobody is going to swap a Pick 3 for a pick 9 and Pick 28 or similar unless like as stated before you really want the points.

I would prefer 2 second rounders than a late first
Probability increases, more youth into club
History suggests, you can throw a blanket over second rounders
It’s just getting the picks right
Owens pick 33
Windhager pick 47
Possibly both better the NWM at pick 11

Maybe...Time will tell.
But as long as Owens and Windhager didn't go top 20, they were a free hit for us.
Taking one of them at 11 would have been silly.
NWM is a class act. Silky and a great kick.

Maybe they are thinking pick 28 plus future second for a late first, but it may well be a waste and just hold the picks we have.
Top 6 seem to be the ones worth fighting for , and then it evens out.
Can't see how we do a top 6, doubt anyone with a pick there would swap for our pick 9 and future 2nd.....and we won't want to give a future first.

Yes no ability to get Top 6 this year. More likely to be to get another first rounder.
Say our first pick from next year for Swan's pick 14 or 17 with also another later pick to us as well.

Doesn't sound like a good idea
A later pick in a worse draft?
The only benefit comes from the fact that it is a year early.
Delayed gratification a better practice

Hope this isn't "the need to do something" phenomenon.
Possibly the club is committed to academy player Cam McKenzie. Who isn't quite Pick 9 material but won't last till the second round.
Why not trade back a little and pick up another pick as well?
Anyway, I hope they're not wasting future picks that might be used to poach Bing.

We didn’t have a free hit with either Owens or Windhager
Both were nominated by other clubs at that pick - we chose to match and used our draft capital to do so.
NWM
Moves well, has deficits in his game (fair enough, he’s young)
Windhager reminds me of young Luke Parker (HTF didn’t we select him in 2010?)

As good as the last few weeks have been ... the club stuffed up.
The review should be been done earlier, completed earlier & Lyon appointed earlier.
We then may have gone harder to get De Goey, Bowes & pick 7, upgraded draft picks with Brisbane, Sydney, GWS with Lyon there.

Fair points, who knows what De Goey might have done if Ross was the coach.Saint 58 wrote: ↑Thu 27 Oct 2022 11:08am As good as the last few weeks have been ... the club stuffed up.

Maybe Ross wants Gags out and Elshaug back, Ross wants familiar faces around him.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
