Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
Hi all
Under Ross Lyon, Brad Hill won a Best & Fairest in his first year at Freo.
Without pre-empting anything, but If he (Ross Lyon) gets the gig at Moorabbin, I'm really going to be interested to see how that dynamic will be between both men.
Maybe this might be the button that gets pressed for us to see Hill become the player we know he can be.
Thoughts?

I would expect Brad to show up in peak condition next pre-season if Ross is appointed.

Not "Simon Templar". He was here first. Please change my username to Bumstead and if possible make me one of those very large sandwiches, thanks!

Hoping that he gets into peak condition, plays on the wing and the game plan utilises his weapons effectively. That definitely wasn't happening with Ratts

In further news it's been reported that during his hiatus Lyon has been studying surgery.
During off season he will operate on Hannebery and Freeman causing a dilemma as to who gets the number 10!

Should be played on the wing and not getting cheap possies in the half back line.

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
So:
10 years ago Brad Hill was playing far better football than now?
Ross thinks playing Brad on a wing consistently will improve his performance: do just that and he will tackle, be strong over the contested ball and take a mark over his head? Ok.
Brad wanted to return to Melbourne. Saints gave him that opportunity and makes him wealthy (more). Brad does not keep his side of the bargain with performances: criticism follows. Brad doesn't like that so rather than play better become a team man he decides he wants out and meets with Clarkson behind club's back with a view to leaving.
It appears no other club, including North, really want Brad. Understandable.
I admire Brad's skills and running but he plays one really good game in a blue moon. If he wants out let him walk. But he wants the money doesn't he. In retrospect you can imagine how Ratts tried to kid Brad along, publicly support him, try him in different spots, asked he be given the ball. Now Brad is still rich, and Ratts is unemployed.
I can't see Ross suddenly making Brad Hill into a mature team player, too late (?), and I suspect his team mates don't respect him all that much. To Sandringham and write down the asset rather than keep racking up operational losses and seeding player discontent. Pandering to Brad has been a very big mistake. I doubt Ross can change the way Brad views himself and footy and St Kilda. He has decided he is not going to get hurt if he can possibly avoid it. Otherwise how can you enjoy being wealthy. And retain that perpetual smile.

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
Don’t agree with much of that!
Brad is clearly an outside player, most wingman are, he is a run and carry, handball receiver and finds space on the turn over
He is not supposed to be Jack Steele or Brad Crouch
We already have grunt mids
We knew what we were getting when we traded for him, we knew his style of footy - and he was elite at it!
What has dropped off is fitness, he cannot run and find space and link as he used to do.
Get him back in shape, lose the spare tyre around his gut and he might get somewhere back near an elite level.

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
Outside player or not, IMO there are no excuses in AFL footy for not attacking the ball or a tackle with vigour. No other player/wingman in the competition is as tentative as Hill. Given the money he is on I dont blame his team mates for questioning his commitment and I believe his continued selection at times has back fired 'big time' on Ratten.
Lyon might get him playing better footy - I hope he does, but I for one was disappointed when we couldnt off load him to North.

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
What team mates have questioned his commitment?
Are there examples of him dogging a contest or not tackling??
Overstated imo
As it was with Lonie - a supporter beat up

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
The mood on here with the old croc negative nellys compared to BF upbeat is incredible…
AirWinmar
I was not feeling optimistic at the end of this season and probably losing a bit of passion for watching the game tbh. I found it pretty hard watching us this year and last, results aside just not great footy to watch for the most part.
I am bloody excited now. Nervously excited, but really excited Ross The Boss will be coming back. Better be announced soon
You know Ross is going to have the team structured very well and get the most out of the players. Announcement and season can't come quick enough

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
Totally wrong. Happy to see Ratts gone.
My preference is to appoint someone who is part of modern football. The best youug assistant coach who is hungry and is forward thinking. Maybe an Yze or someone similar.

Agree Gershwin, I was a big fan of Lyon in his time at St Kilda, had the opportunity to meet him quite a few times and found him personable and intelligent.Gershwin wrote: ↑Sat 22 Oct 2022 1:26pmTotally wrong. Happy to see Ratts gone.

I would have also preferred a young new innovative first time coach.
Personally I am happy to see Ratts gone and if it’s a choice between Ratts and Lyon I’ll take Lyon every time.
Lyon was poor at developing youth and very defensive, but was also an innovator and had total buy in from his players.
Hopefully he reflects on those negatives and changes that part of his coaching.
I’ll bet you any money you like B Hill won’t show up to pre season in the shape he has over the past two years. Expect to see him leading the distance time trials and returned to a wing.

Re: Ross Lyon and Brad Hill
I also liked RLs recognition and excitement about Windy later in that video.
If I remember, Hill really helped us win 3 of those 8 games in the top half of the season. Of course, the moment he falls off he is slammed.
Dunno how he’ll go now..but I am excited about next year.. for the first time since I don’t know when.
I am less concerned about Hill. I am more excited about how RL will motivate other players.
Speaking of 29 yr olds..
Look at our midfield..
Crouch 28?
Ross 29?
Jones 27/8?
No silk. No A graders.
Crouch is the pick of em, but maybe Ross can really lift yet another gear. ‘22 (first half particularly) Ross was very decent.
Jones? I am really interested to see how RL works with him.
I am really anticipating exciting with Hunter C and I can’t say I have any sense about JB.. he is a total mystery. Could he be a Dal Santo?
Higgins and Butler..what do u think?? What will go down there?
Coffield and Paton - two promising stars that have fallen from the stars to join the regular smog. What happens there? Highmore? Will Webster be the reborn?
But best of all, I’m looking for in field decision making to improve…where they kick it..and when..
