Let's hope it's a 1x1x1x1x1 year contract, with us having the right to exercise the options if we so wish at yearly intervals or give him the flick at anytime.
Even if we need to pay $100,000 per annum over the going rate to have these options in place.

It's funny isn't it that it's largely those who complain about the club too often 'bending over' who are.so keen to take another shafting from Ross Lyon. We're like a battered wife, blaming ourselves and begging our abuser to come home. I'm afraid those who think he'll make us relevant and respected are likely to be disappointed. This whole episode makes us look like punching bags, incapable of moving on.

He'd be getting $100,000 p.a. more than the going rate.

All future coaches should be subject to something similar, not just Lyon ... it's to protect us from ourselves.

After they've agreed to a million dollar contract, say ... we can turn around and say, "we'll agree to paying you $1.1 million (another $100k more), but you'll
have to give us options to break the contract, if things go pear-shaped. If you fail to deliver.

If the about-to-be-signed coach (whoever it is) think they'll improve us, why would they hesitate to sign such a contract?

Isn't that what is being promised here by Lyon - that he'll improve us - and what we'd be expecting from him.
Coaching is result-driven ... not promise driven. Goals should be defined.

In his last 4 years with Fremantle they finished 16, 14, 14 and 13. It seemed that his successful days were over.

I really think we have made a mistake but I will support the club as I have for 57 years.

I didn't realize you were speaking of fantasyland.
Back in the real world, IMHO, no prospective AFL coach would even consider a contract you're describing.
And you seem to be missing the point - he didn't approach us for the job.
We apparently chased him.
So, given that narrative, you expect us to be able to dictate terms and conditions that have never been in place in the AFL?
Seriously?
You expect him to take on a job for 10% more money but no long term guarantee?
Who in their right mind (in the AFL) would accept that?

The coaches that believe in themselves and their ability to deliver results ... that they'll make a difference.
There's an extra $100k for them p.a.

Long term on the proviso that they deliver results, as long as they"re delivering.... this is a result driven business.

It is not a sinecure.

Why do we continue to sell ourselves short?? ... I mean we've basically installed a coach.

So here's the scenario you're painting :-

Ross, we want you as our coach.
We've just sacked our last coach (and the 2 before him),
BUT we really want you.
How much do you want to be our Coach?
Whatever it is, we'll pay you.
And, we'll then give you 10% more so that we can have the terms of :-

1x1x1x1x1x1 and the ability to sack you at the end of each year.
BUT we really want you, and we want you to give up what you're doing to fully immerse yourself into us (but we can sack you after each year if we choose to)

Whoever his manger is would roll on the floor laughing at that.

This is not idealism - it's the real world.

We're selling ourselves short in our desperation and we risk paying for it later.

We've installed a coach here.
His last 4 years at Freo resulted in his sacking.

So we should have some bargaining power.

As long as there's some protective clauses along the way and it's not a straight 5 year contract, at least.

Wishful thinking on your part.
You're trying to 'insure' the appointment because you're personally against it.

It's not going to happen (IMHO).
We chased him - the terms are going to favour him
If you were a prospective Coach being courted by us, would you seriously allow our Board to install a 'sacking clause' given our track record?

Given we don't have a coach, sure I'll be happy enough to have Lyon back.
If we even entertained the idea for one second of having either Hird or Buckley, from teams that simply despised us when they were there, then I'd feel vommitous every time a game came on. There is no way guys like that could have their hearts in a Saints job. Lyon, on the other hand, has reason to want our gig, I believe he still loves the Saints.
That's important, commitment to the cause!

This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

Smells of desperation, that's all.

What I'm against is our desperation (and the possible rash and ultimately costly installment of a coach).

We are a 8-3 side injury free, regardless of who coaches ... and we have great facilities.

We should stop selling ourselves short.

Voted "no" to Ross in the poll but he's now back on board again so let's hope that he can work a miracle or two and get the Saints to that second flag (and preferably even more!).

I like that the contract is in the form of ... "if the coach does the right thing and produces/delivers, he stays" ... otherwise (I presume) we can let them go with minimal cost/pain.

This is what I was getting at before ... it wasn't wishful thinking on my part, at all.

(So, we didn't sell ourselves short - we weren't that desperate to install Lyon ... we have included protective clauses in the event that the coach doesn't deliver).
