The reason for this is historic - noting the age demographic of the List which saw, initially, the recruitment of players from the State Leagues (of whom only Wilkie now remains), then trading in players and now going to the Draft.

It has been a process - and remains a process.

And, I would add, a deliberate process.

In regards the Draft, how many players across the competition, Drafted as 18 year olds, are now being de-listed with minimal AFL game time and returning to their original State League Clubs?

To me this raises another question, being Drafting at 18 (and to accommodate the never ending appetite of the AFL for publicity over and above the interests of the Code and players).

Just to add, I support the Draft process at 20 years of age (and doing away with all the other never ending rubbish the AFL carries on with seeking never ending headlines - and noting that instead of players changing Clubs seeking more opportunity (Steele, Membrey) we now see first pick players changing Clubs to Clubs in contention, so seeking a premiership on their CV. This process is no longer an equalization process and, indeed, is the opposite)

At 20, these players have completed their formal education, have had exposure to State League football over and above Under 18 Competitions, are able to be assessed accordingly and have an increased maturity upon being required to leave home, families and friends

This would also see a strengthening of the State Leagues, which are the feeder competitions and which reflect the strength of the Code.

Plus it filters down from State Leagues to suburban competitions.
