2014

Post: # 1985139Post Gershwin »

From 2013 to 2014 we lost:
Blake
Dal Santo
Koschitzke
McEvoy
Milne

And we gained:
Savage
Longer
Billings
Dunstan
Acres
Bruce

Dreadful List Management or bad luck?

s*** list management

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

You also left out the great Lenny Hayes who retired at the end of 2014. Irreplaceable

If we had the right people running the club and competent football directors we could have been a destination club.
Tom Hickey came to us from the Gold Coast at the end of 2012 and we gave them our first round pick

With the older brigade retiring and the salary cap issues getting sorted, we had a chance to rebuild with quality talent but unfortunately we had an incompetent head recruiter

Development of the talent was not great, but I think our selections in the National Draft were the main issue.

Billings was taken at pick 3 in 2013. McCartin was pick 1 in 2014. Dunstan and Acres were first round picks too. Longer was originally picked up by Brisbane as a top 10 pick in the national draft in 2011 but wanted to return to Melbourne. We gave up the equivalent of an early 2nd rounder to secure him from the Lions at the end of 2013

Let's not forget Pelchen's disastrous waste of pick 13 on Tom Lee, who ended up playing about 5 games

Lets also not forget that the team could have been a bit different if Ross Lyon wasn't so hell bent on recruiting recycled rejects from other clubs instead of drafting youth in the 2009-2010 draft period

Even with the talent we already had on our list he wanted to bring in Dean Polo instead of giving a guy who was our first round draft pick in 2008 ( Tom Lynch) some games experience and helping the club to continue to build for the future

Pretty much what you'd do if employed to fill the role of agent saboteur.

Horrible list management.

Letting Dal go was just plain stupid. And we all know the McEvoy trade was pretty questionable.

Was this all Pelchin’s doing? That guy really screwed us good and proper!

Yeah, RL’s approach at the time was to field more mature players over 21. He’ll have to go for a different approach this time, however. We also lost Jamie Cripps to WCE on account of this, yet younger players of the time like Jack Steven and David Armitage wanted to stay.

Pretty good at turning high draft picks into lower draft picks

Tom Lynch Pick 12 into Pick 37 after three years development
Jamie Cripps Pick 24 into Pick 43 after two years development

Don’t forget

Dal Santo Pick 13 into Compo pick 25
Goddard Pick 1 into Compo pick 13

Xavier Clarke Pick 5 into pick 60
Matt Maguire Pick 21 into pick 91

Of course
Luke Ball Pick 2 into ZERO

Add
Ben Long Pick 25 into pick 32

Buy high and sell low
Great strategy!!!!

I would call you up on a Saturday night and we'd both stay out till the morning light and we sang
"here we go again"
and as time goes by we will always be in a club in 2014, singing
" here we go again"
Simon (a) I wish I was sober.....

(with apologies to James Blunt. Substitute any year from 2012 on if you wish)

Not really a very good a very good representation of what happened…

I’ll pay the first two except WCE had us over a barrel with Cripps who was walking out one way or another… and Lynch left because of the coach

Dal pick #13 to #25 compo following +10 years of service
Clark and Maguire weren’t exactly worth much more than what we got though one can make an argument that we should have kept them.

Either way neither demonstrated good value

Ball was a fiasco but that was more a Lyon thing than a recruiters thing and Long by all means got a whopping upgrade on his contract.

Of that list… Goddard was really the costly one but pick 13 still could have been Brodie Grundy, Jack Viney, Tim Membrey (tough draft).

Pretty accurate representation of how it happened

Because it was a reality!

Matt Maguire Pick 91 used on Will Johnson (2 games)
Xavier Clarke Pick 60 used on Jesse Smith (0 games)

Both those players and Luke Ball were culturally significant player

Pissing them off for zero tore at the fabric of the team

And to bring in a c*** that nobody liked

Ludicrous

Funny… in terms of trade value I thought they were reasonable deals for players outside the top 22, one coming off a major injury after having been hampered by injuries with both having played SFA in 09. Both were also very much out of the top 22

I didn’t realise you were also measuring by emotional value as perceived by you.

No argument shift there… talk about smoke and mirrors

Clearly too many seat sniffers in important places at the club during that time.

Could never have been Viney...Melbourne F/S recruit.
We turned Goddard's compo pick into Tom Hickey, Spencer White, and Trent Denis-Lane.
We ended up with Membrey for nothing the next year anyway.

Good to know.

Boy… talk about terrible timing. Shocking draft that year. To be honest, Hickey + TDL and White was a good outcome comparatively speaking

In all fairness, I wouldn't include the Long trade in the above list. Clubs were giving away players at this Trade Period.
Blake Acres for a future third (likely to be around Pick 50)! Freo gave him away.
Pick 1 and Horne-Francis for picks 2 and 3. Yikes!!!
Bruhn for pick 18!
Grundy for 27 WTF.

Considering the above, we did well getting 32 for Long.
