Official AFL trade week thread

Post: # 1982307Post Bruce G McAbee »

All trade deals and rumours on this thread.
Apparently we are interested in Zaine Cordy from the Bulldogs as a restricted free agent.
Any thoughts on him?

Think of me long enough to make a memory.

Gallagher said we wouldn't be busy this trade period. However, North Melbourne have now publicly expressed interest in Hunter Clark, which fills me with dread.

None of us here have any control over what happens. Just have to hope the club ub doesn't act hastily, or just get involved in trades for the sake of being seen to be doing something.

That's what worries me about the noise around Clark

One of my boys, a Carltn fan, told me Harry Mackay had signed for them until 2030. I told him the Saints had signed Diddly Squat for the same period.

That’s two consecutive trade periods where they have achieved diddly squat.

"Being seen to be doing something" characterises much of our trade week campaigs in recent years.

Disposing of McEvoy, Stanley, Hickey, Acres and now Long (albeit on his wishes) and maybe even Clark...

BTW

We are going to be quiet during the trade period

Is code for

No one gives a f*** about us or wants to join StK

How do you improve a list by NOT being active in the trade/free agency period!

We are pathetic and Gallagher is useless

Bowes tours Cats Bombers Hawks facilities next few days then makes his decision
Welcome to irrelevant land…we aren’t even in the discussion
And I expect a nice 9-12 slide next year coming too
How the hell are we going to bridge talent gap when Lions bring in 3-4 guns including Ashcroft as no 1 kid
Cats add Bowes and pick 7 abd jump ahead of us pick wise AFTER winning a flag?? Plus add Oliver??
Tigers just go out get Tarranto and Hopper??
Lol we get Cordy or Paddy Dowel who is a cabbage
We are in the bins folks
Club must throw everything next window at Ben King
Statement time
Build some excitement ffs

What do you mean "we" kimosabe?

And Gallagher is clearly very good at his job.

Don't get the verballing.

You have to laugh at the toys being thrown out of the cot because we're not hyper active during the trade period.

Weigh up what we need, vs what is available, vs what currency we have. The club has been heavily criticized for being shortsighted and trading away draft picks for middle-of-the-road talent. So last year, we kept our picks and landed three extremely talented kids with them. Why change that strategy?

Taranto and Hopper are very good players, but how would we get them other than trading away our future?

Bowes would be a reasonable get, but is he what we need? Not really. Pick 7 would be handy however, and seems the reason we're still in that conversation.

For all the back slapping following our "mega" trade period in 2019, how is that going to look in a couple of years? Most would be happy to see Butler, Hill and Jones gone already. Howard has regressed and Ryder is gone. Yet the kids we could have had if we'd held on to any of the picks that we ontraded.... Caleb Serong, Kozi Pickett, Tom Greene, Sam De Koning, Mitch Georgiades, Harrison Jones...

Even the Higgins trade in 2020, yes Jack could still be a player, but the pick we traded landed Max Holmes. I know who I'd rather.

You can trade for the short to medium term, but for sustained success, the draft is the way to go - you've just gotta get it right.

right.
Interesting point.

Saints: Higgins & Allison 2020
Points toward academy players in 2021

Traded picks: Max Holes & Judson Clarke drafted

It all gets down to how you use your picks on whether you win, lose, break even.
Carslile & Gresham V Francis

We may well have used the pick on Allison anyway.

Max Holmes looks great being the 20th or so player picked in a side loaded with mature talent. Good player but lets not pretend he'd have us flying up the ladder.

Completely agree, but would you trade Higgins for Holmes today? Of course you would.

Wasn't that Carlisle and Gresh vs Parish? Have definitely lost that trade so far.

Happily stand corrected, though. Sort of hoping I'm wrong.

You are incorrect.
Our pick #5 (traded for Carlisle) slipped one spot to #6 and was used by Essendope to take Francis.
They used their existing pick #4 (which slipped to #5) to select Parish.

Francis now asking to be traded to Sydney.

Jason Blake has been traded to Carlton.
Does anyone think we should tried to get him back?
For a future 3rd round pick, I would have said yes.
