In calling out some of the absolute rubbish put on this site, the question was put that, if that was my view, why do I contribute to this site periodically

I note the contribution calling St Kilda as not knowing what a football club is - by the same contributor the subject of the first paragraph

Interesting

Simply some contributing to this site do so to promote disruption, they not being St Kilda supporters

I’ll leave others to identify them - but they are most obvious by the content of their contributions

And they go on and on and on with their attacks - attacks on the wrong people

Simply, we have a most competent Board, a most competent administration, a most competent football administration and a developing List where the structural deficiencies are being addressed as best any Club can

In regards the likes of Taranto et al, it is noted that Richmond and Collingwood have made the offer they have so MCG “blockbuster” Clubs in which the AFL have a vested interest for the survival of the competition

So there is a bias in the AFL which impedes St Kilda and other Clubs nationally (look at where May, Cameron, Lynch et al come from)

It is in the face of this bias - including the draw - St Kilda’s progress needs to be judged

That is the fact of the matter

And, in the face of that bias, St Kilda is making progress because of who is involved at the Club

So I call out the contributor targeting the St Kilda FC

Im sorry but how does the above contribute do a draft/trading thread? We all know that certain clubs have more pulling power than others? The Saints have not always been the best run club and the rewards that clubs like Collingwood & Richmond reap are the results of generational supporter sucess. We can only hope that it will be our clubs turn to shine in our life time/s?

I am in agreement with much of what Killa has said, but also agree with IS that this thread is regularly disrupted by non-core comments.

Let's stick with the subject matter, player movements involving St Kilda FC in the off-season.

I was interested to read Luke Beveridge stating that as much as coaches and supporters dislike good players leaving to take up better paid deals at other clubs, in the Dogs case Josh Dunkley being lured by Port Adelaide on a massive 5 year deal, players can hardly be blamed for seeking to maximise their earnings, that's now a reality of life.

In the case of our footy club, I would be disappointed if Ben Long decides to play elsewhere. He's only played 79 games (17 in 2022) since being selected at pick #25 in 2016 and has only occasionally displayed the promise of his potential. His last game was arguably his best yet and I firmly believe that he will only get better in 2023 and beyond so I hope like hell that the club can reach an agreement with his manager to sign a new deal.

The comment at 12.17AM on 3 September on this thread was the catalyst for the response

This nonsense needs to be called out wherever it appears

It was just a 'p*ss take' no need to take those comments seriously. Wayne is an astute poster, but like all of us we get flabbergasted with the club at times and vent.

Whitfield rumours swirling
Wants to come back to Victoria

Would be a plus if we could get him for around 700k.
But would be using the Brad hill pick ONLY for him

Another cash dump by a Sydney club, an exchange of later picks & they take some of the salary.

FATHER-SON RUCK IN DRAFT MIX
THE SON of former AFL ruckman Trent Knobel has emerged in the NAB League this season as a potential draftee in November.

Max Knobel has played for Gippsland Power in the under-18 competition and last weekend also lined up for Vic Country in its clash with the Young Guns.

The 204cm prospect is among the ruck candidates in this year's group as he looks to emulate his father, who played 75 games in an AFL career spanning three clubs – Brisbane, St Kilda and Richmond. Max doesn't qualify as father-son eligible to any of them so would be in the open draft pool.

"He's grown six centimetres in the past 18 months and he looks like he's still growing. As a skinny underdeveloped kid he missed out on a lot of opportunities at representative footy but the plan has always been that he'd participate in our programs in a talls academy knowing he always had a really good skill set," said Gippsland talent manager Scott McDougall.

"He's got a really neat left-foot kick. It's been a patient build and he's starting to reap the benefits of having a really good grounding in his ruck craft.

Part of that comes from working alongside his father, with Trent Gippsland's ruck coach in recent years.

"He's shown some really good forward craft at times but it's now getting that consistency," McDougall said. – Callum Twomey

In terms of where our List is and what is required from the avenues open to St Kilda to improve the List, it is interesting to note that from the 2020 side which won a final v the WB, we are now missing Carlisle, Ryder and Hannebery.

So we had Carlisle as support for Howard (noting Carlisle was in the Brownlow votes when we beat Richmond during the season, but absent from the Semi-final we lost to Richmond due to the birth of he and his wife's child - and Long was in the votes in that victory but absent from the final due to suspension), Ryder supporting Marshall including by going forward in support for King (Ryder then absent from the Final v Richmond due to an injury sustained very late in the Final v WB) and Hannebery, now retired unfortunately, adding class to our mid-field rotations.

Gresham was absent for the majority of 2020 - and has been periodically absent since.

Interesting, hey?

Noting that, in 2022, we played our best footy when Ryder and Marshall were both available.

So, in my view, we need to retain the core from 2020 AND replace Carlisle, Ryder and Hannebery with like for like.

Easier said than done, no doubt.

The progression of Higgins, Wanganeen-Milera, Windhager and Owens (plus who we add) needs to push past the likes of Ross, Webster and some others.

That Wood can be not required at North Melbourne, but then selected by St Kilda is also a commentary - and the foregoing names need to put the likes of Wood under real pressure at the selection table.

Hopefully we are in a position to give the likes of Adams and Heath a taste in 2023, noting the reference to Carlisle and Ryder (so like for like in regard the structural deficiencies post 2020 when, in my view, with Carlisle, Ryder and Long available v Richmond we would have been right in it)

Not sure why you think that players who were good in 2020 will be good in 2023. Or a coach that was good in 2020 will be good in 2023. The game moves on and we are usually struggling to keep up. I hope we move on players such as Hill, Long and some others and draft some good kids.

Move on players such as Hill and Long

Players with pace and skill plus disposal skills

We have a relatively young List with only Hill, Ross, Webster and Campbell at 30 years of age in 2023

And of those 4 only Hill is class

At present it appears that going to the draft might be are only chance to find quality players as we appear to be at the bottom of the heap as a destination club with hapless North and that rabble Essendon more likely to be nominated. Not even Amon’s mother could sway him to nominate the Saints but maybe after working with our Admin it was her that suggested the Hawks

The afl's free agency is fast becoming a big joke if it wasn't already.almost impossible for clubs that aren't the big victorian clubs to attract young talent from other clubs. Some of the figures being thrown around are utterly ridiculous.afl needs to look at this asap ,clubs like stkilda and north will never climb up the ladder with 1 frdp a year.and paying overs for free agents aint the answer either.

It does seem very suspicious that those large clubs continully have the CAP space to be adding players?

ST KILDA'S Ben Long has requested a trade to Gold Coast.

AFL.com.au reported last week that Long had attracted interest from the Suns, and the Saints confirmed on Wednesday that he has requested a trade.

That's a bugger....I felt that Ben Long has a lot of potential but been unable to play consistent good footy.

I assume he has been offered a better deal somewhere else. Still, if he wants to leave there's not much point worrying about "what might have been" and I wish him luck. Being out of contract I'm not sure if St Kilda will get anything in return but he was drafted as an early round 2 pick.

In today's paper it's reported by Jon Ralph that both Collingwood and St Kilda are interested in Billie Frampton - it depends on the money and duration on offer by both clubs but St Kilda might also offer greater prospects of opportunities than the Pies.

“Alastair Clarkson is aiming to bring in 5-6 established players from other clubs”

Recent update on SEN:

Griffin Logue looks likely to happen now

Brad Hill a certainty

Hunter clark absolutely gettable, might come as a package deal with Hill

Darcy Tucker coming from Freo also

How are they going to satisfy three clubs pick wise ..? They don’t have much in assets other than their number one dp.

Next years draft supposed to be very good

As it currently stands North dont have anything to offer us apart from pick 1. Saying that I'd take Nick Larkey & Tarryn Thomas for Hill.

We need to remember we have the power in this situation, as Hill is contracted.

On a side not with North only having pick 1 then pick 55, how are all these players that have nominated North getting their?

North have no choice but to split their pick 1..apparently this is a good draft to do it with the clear best player off to Brisbane.
They will also need to be a bit creative with future picks in order to pick up the players they’ve targeted or use a player or two to trade out similar to what we did in 2020.

Agreed but the draft discussion is that the top 7 are very even after Ashcroft. That actually works against clubs wanting to jump up the draft order. Unless of course a club like GWS or GCS are in love with a particular player eg Sheezel? GCS will hold 5 & 7 after the Rankine trade and GWS best will be 3 plus a bunch of Richmond's picks. If you get to chose at 3 or 5 there would have to be an absolute standout at 1 for that to occur and I dont believe there is one.

Our best hope IMO is if North get priority pick/s and use them to package a deal involving a number of clubs! Gallagher is going to have to some creative work to get another club (North) to give up a top 10 pick for Clark. Unless of course they hand over pick 1 for Clark & Hill &, which is very unlikely.

Norths compo reportedly 2nd and 3rd in 2023 draft, that have to be used to trade in players. Hill probably gets traded for the 2nd round pick (2022 or 2023), but it will make the idea of moving Clark for a top 10 pick more complex.

Stavro on BF has suggested there are other clubs interested in Clark with GWS being one.
