IF we dont get DeGoey
OK, so lets say we don't get DeGoey, where to form here in a strategy point.
We currently have 9,27,45,81. Will all drop at least 1 spot with Ashcroft = so pick 10.
Looking what is touted as moving I actually think on a needs basis DeGoey aside , many of the top names players either don't match our positional demographic needs or want too much money. Toranto and Hopper - both inside mids who will be on big coin. Lobb - Kurt Tippet of this era over payed , over hyped and often doesn't deliver. Dunkley poor ball users - we have plenty of those.
So the concept of recruit for needs seems sound to me.
Without knowing the depth of the draft the best strategy may be to bank some funds and hit the draft and focus on internal progression.
My gut says Long is gone as the offer will be more than we should pay (if $600,000 is correct). Therefore based on that type of money a later second round pick isn't out of the question. e.g GC have 25 so we trade Long and 45 for 25
25 & 27 in the bank the ability to perhaps turn 9(10) into say a 5/6 using one of the second rounders then exists - say Haw 6, 32 for 9 ,25 (don't know how the points work) for the right player
I will be gutted if they trade Clark as he has everything we need, class, good ball use, and time with the ball.
If we can get a top 8 pick plus say 27,& 32 that is 3 young players into the club - which luck says 2 should be good.
Continued development of Windy, NWM , Owens, King, Coffield, Clark, combined with the list we have and some peripheral trading - whether that be Hartigan, Campbell or whoever provides money in the bank and a younger list which can continue to develop - work to a bottom part of the top 8 and then look at free agency /out of contract options 2023, rather than chase for chase sake.
Just a thought

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
Who is prepared to pay Long $600k?
I’m a fan of Ben but surely that is a piss take.
That would be akin to someone paying $800k for a has been who couldn’t get on the park consistently for four years straight and $900k for a good outside runner who isn’t in the best 100 players in the competition.
No club would be that stupid!

These figures touted for long true or false indicate the worth of the guy we must keep him

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
I think we will have dodged a bullet. Great player, aging, more frequent injuries, but having a terrific finals series; just don't think it would be a good fit for him or us. The no play up clause should be a big red flag.
Anyway he and the Pies love each other, he would cheat on us - you never forget your first.
One door shuts, another opens. We will do ok.

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
Not the player we need.
Need to start building next generation now. Current generation can make finals but can't win a flag without serious talent coming through from a young age.

Any chance we are working on Bing? I’d prefer to let him recover and get him as a free agent when Bing and Ming are absolutely dominate

At 28 ?
Who really thinks we are challenging in 2 years ???
Move on from De Goey
Just pray that Lethers and co (who by now realise they’ve stuffed this “windows open flag tilt” by topping up) don’t go out in desperation looking for another Brad Hill messiah deal ,…I wouldn’t put ut past them

2024 and 2025 could be good years for us. Just need the right people in recruitment and need to have a strong focus on development of playersTeflon wrote: ↑Tue 13 Sep 2022 12:13am At 28 ?

Lethers and co were mesmerised by the applause and recognition they received for the 2019 trade period, but I reckon organic growth had more to do with our success in 2020 rather than the group of imports themselves...as well as the reduced quarters, reduced number of games in h&a, plus the artificial camp conditions with Ratts able to unite the money ball group
They went hard at the flag tilt as you say, and made some short term calls after such a good season that we had in 2020. Chip Frawley, McKernan and Abbott were all (in hindsight) just a short term, desperate and unnecessary attempt to stay relevant
Let's hope they don't go after Tom Mitchell.

If they are paying Benny Long $600,000 then they can fork out more than a late 2nd rounder for him.

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
I'd go as extreme to say Clark, Coffield, Paton, and Ryder got us into Finals in 2020. The former 3, for varying reasons, haven't been the same since. They are key to our progression next year.Scollop wrote: ↑Tue 13 Sep 2022 2:13am2024 and 2025 could be good years for us. GS is interested in Clark we should demand a first rounder he is a quality player.
They will baulk at this so we go back to them and ask for Bing he is injured and they now have players who can cover his spot it is a fair trade.

No one can tell who will or won't challenge at any time or year.

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
Even if we want him and he doesn't come, we've already achieved something.
We've made Collingwood do something they don't want to do to keep him.
How often have we been forced to pay overs to our own players because of interest from other clubs?
Whoever started the 'Ben Long to Clarko rumour' has forced us to either pay him more to keep him or lose him.

I recon as soon as Clarko was announced as North's next coach just about every player manager worth his salt would have leaked fake interest from Clarko.Mr Magic wrote: ↑Tue 13 Sep 2022 1:05pm Even if we want him and he doesn't come, we've already achieved something.

I doubt we'll be paying more if he stays, why would we.

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
Is DeGoey 28?
I thought he was 26 now
Why do we report inaccuracies reported to suit arguments
DeGoey has at least 5 seasons left in him

Re: IF we dont get DeGoey
It would be a shame as JDG has shown he is an impact player. I think our fall back is to off load Clark for a top 10 pick to add a similiar dynamic/quality player to the list.

Geelong have pulled out of the race to secure JDG citing “cultural reasons” according to Caroline Wilson.
