Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
Absolutely, why wouldn't anyone, it's OUR footy club the girls are representing and they deserve all the support they can get.
OK, I realise it's not yet riveting to watch but I noticed yesterday that the standard of play has improved a lot since previous years, they're kicking longer, hit targets a lot more and Kate Shierlaw is doing her famous #12 guernsey proud, scoring 4 goals against the Swans.
For all those agnostics out there, the AFL is determined to make the women's comp a great success, let's face it, we live in the era of equal opportunity, and I'm quite sure that in the not too distant future AFLW will become fully professional and attract huge following. You can take that to the bank!

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
I'm pretty sure they wanted to re-align it so that it wasn't played in the summer heat. Also so that the first round was in the bye round so it might get more exposure when everyone is footy focussed.

I'm not emotionally invested yet.
We start winning and I'll start following them. Once I'm hooked then I will be for life.

Sure do.

The skills definitely seemed to have taken a jump up since last season from the bits I saw.

Yep, Ive attended a few games and Ive been very impressed with the courage and intensity of the women's team. Anyone that pulls on a Saints jumper and plays their heart out will do me, I'll watch and support them. I watched Saturday's game and was super impressed with the team's tackling and quality of the teams recruits. So get on board!
Go you good things....!!!

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
Now there are 18 teams, they need to align the season with the AFL one and play the games as curtain raisers to the AFL games.
There's no incentive to get to the footy early and there is certainly no atmosphere.
The AFLW can play a role in changing that as well as trying to win the hearts of AFL fans.

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
Watched it for decades.
Yes, I DO prefer the AFL.
But...it's ok. It's a helluva lot better now than when it started. So everyone deserves respect.
I'll tell ya something a bit controversial.
IF the AFL Saints had improved as much as the AFLW Saints ( from inception) we'd be in the top 4 right now.
They seem to be functioning at a more professional mindset...maybe it's the Coaching of Peta & the culture & philosophy? I don't know, but this year they seem different...does St Santos have that much mojo?

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
I agree, but a big hurdle would be cost to clubs flying double the teams around Aus and accommodation etc for interstate games. It would be nice to catch the last half before the men's game, or more.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Mon 29 Aug 2022 10:19am Now there are 18 teams, they need to align the season with the AFL one and play the games as curtain raisers to the AFL games.

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
SPOT ON! I'd love to see AFLW games played as a curtain raiser for the AFL game! It would make for much better (ahem) "pre-game entertainment" than whats on offer at the present time!Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Mon 29 Aug 2022 10:19am Now there are 18 teams, they need to align the season with the AFL one and play the games as curtain raisers to the AFL games.

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
Yep women playing.
First game I ever saw was the Victorian Women's Football League...the Seaford Tigerettes vs St Kilda Sharks.
I kinda went along for laugh as I was a tad younger and a bit more of a tosser.
That level of play compared to today is absolutely leaps and bounds!

A couple of guns have come from those Sharks.
Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"

The girls are getting better. The game is ok to watch.
Still a long way to go.... but there is big improvement.
Very long way to go before I have any real passion or will celebrate success.

+1
More appropriate thread titles from anyone who wants to belittle the women's comp could be:
A. Do Saintsational members care?
B. Do men born before 1975 care?
C. Isn't it fun denigrating and disparaging something that other people care about?

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
I was born when one of the big bombs went off in Japan and I care as I posted earlier in this forum.
They were pretty bad last year and mostly unwatchable but they have their best two players back this year plus a decent ruck and it's a whole different ball game.
The are some nasty MCP's on SS but don't lump the rest of us in with them.
Nicky D and the girls wear RW and B so they are deserving of our support.
Denigrating them doesn't make you tough.

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
I certainly don’t want to denigrate the comp I simply just don’t care
I wish it all the best but it does nothing for me And I’m not interested
Hope this doesn’t lessen my toughness

Was going to write "I don't give a shyster.."
Care now, after reading this, and the first up win.
I hope they win every match - just don't watch so often

Re: AFLW Does anyone really care?
Sometimes when I'm a real bastard and leave my kindness in the drawer...yes, it tis fun indeedy.
But the women's league from yesterday was definitely "take the pissible" content. Much like the
shite has been & wanna be players you find in small town clubs out having a red hot go with their 45 kilo beer gut hanging out.
But I do applaud anyone doing something if only because you're having a go. I saw plenty of male & female AFL players who acted like they didnt give a damn and were absolutely pathetic on field.
Literally recall a match this year where Hill made me wonder if he gave a sh1t about even breathing.
