2022 Trades for Year 2023

Post: # 1977481Post groupie1 »

Rumor NWM is homesick: if so trade. Sadly, Adelaide will need 1st pick for Rankine. Future first?

Hill - discussion about his happiness at club and club happiness at his output.
Great footballer. Won't be disappointed if he leaves and we pay AS LITTLE AS f****** POSSIBLE OF HIS SALARY.

Next season relies heavily on two things:
- Clark, Coff, Windy, Owens. If we get the best out of that quartet, we already 1/5 better.
- Higgins, King, Skunk goalkicking: we lost to Brisbane this year due to poor goalkicking, and 2 games last year (Swans and Geelong) for the same reason.

So here's my prescription:
Focus on internal improvement from the academy picks and the 8,9 in Clark/Coff.
Intense goal kicking for the 3 forwards who miss too easily.
Get King, Hayes, Sharman working nicely as forwards and spreading properly.
Skunk on a wing.
Get the best draft picks we can for 1st pick.
Trade NWM for an Adelaide club's 1st rounder either this or next year.
See what we can get from 28 yr old M Wood.
Get at least one FA: De Goey would be the one.
Trade nobody who doesn't bring in a sub-30 pick. Eg. if Webster, Billings, Ross, Jones combined get us pick 28 & 30, go for it, package it up and try to get 2 topic 20 picks, and use them.
Give Sam Taylor a 10 year deal and trade out Howard.
Campbell to support Marshall until Heath is ready.
LEO CONNOLLY MUST PLAY, especially if Hill walks.
Try Highmore in attack: FF. Kid takes marks.
Beg Bytel to stay.
King and Sharman also forward as both can fly.

Like it or not, we don't have a quick fix.
Hayes would give better F50 structure and support for King; Higgins and King goalkicking improvement will be significant; add De Goey to all that and we're a 12 win team. It is through drafting and Clark/Coffield and improvement of Ownes/Windhager that gets us a bit higher.

Not all doom and gloom but a lot of 'ifs.'

Gresham: if he could attract a top 15 pick or a decent trade, I'd strongly consider it.

If someone wants to leave, the club doesn't have to fork over ant part of his salary. Case of, you want your full contract salary, play out your contract, otherwise f*** off.

It's not just about now, it's about 5 years down the track, so utilising draft picks is super important. We want to remain competitive in the long term so if we chose to get more players in the 26+ age group they must be free agents onlly.

You're right about improvement from our youngsters. King, Coffield, Clark, Higgins, Connolly, Windhager, Owens, Sharman, Paton, and Heath can, and I believe will, get better. That's not a lot of youngsters, though, so we have to build on that pool of young talent

If Hill goes, I can only see a second round pick coming back our way with us paying $300k of his salary. You'd hope that would be North Melbourne 's 2023 second rounder which would be around pick 20. I'd take that.

I don't see many clubs knocking on the door for Billings, Jones or Webster. It would be a huge surprise and highly unlikely.

Yes to keeping Campbell

An absolute no to trading out Gresham. He's one of the few players we have who can make something out of nothing

To me, Sharman needs to okay forward. They've extended his contract so they must rate him. He and Hayes can take some heat off King

There are never quick fixes around building a list that can truly challenge. If we do everything right, we can put ourselves firmly into the top 6 by 2024

As for De Goey, I'm not that keen. Comes with a lot of baggage and would only be coming for $$$$. When that's the sole motivation, could he ever really be invested in our club?

He's an unusual character.

I have no idea who DeGoey supported as a kid. If it was us then that changes things a little. I think someone on here may have mentioned he had been an Essendon supporter as a kid.

Only thing I could find was a reddit that suggested goofy barracks for the tigers.

People change jobs for money all the time. Doesn't make them any less motivated in their new job.
Why is it different for footballers?
Very few footballers play for the club they loved as a kid.
You bond very quickly with your new team and play for each other as part of a shared goal.

Blake Acres didn't want to go to Freo but has been nothing but professional there.
Sean Dempster was the steak knives in the Schneider deal but was an amazing player for us. Not sure he ever requested a trade to St Kilda and was getting plenty of opportunity at Sydney.

Other than Andrew Lovett, name one player that has been traded to us or come to us as a free agent that has not given their all for the club? Separate that from not played well.

If looking at long term also have to consider if/when Tassie comes in.
Compromised draft kills us as has in past

Acres is a model citizen.
Dempster is a model citizen.
DeGoey is far from a model citizen
