Reflecting on this a little more it seems like it may have been a decision made by the club moreso than Dan. Why retire after going off to Germany for treatment from a specialist and then actually stringing a few games together? Maybe it was just a last ditch effort to be fit for finals since we seemed like a shoe-in at that point. Wouldn't surprise me to see him pop up at another club next year as a supplementary pick to be honest.

Apparently got $178,000 a game

Not bad!

Could say that about a lot of players who have a horrific run with injuries

Charlie Curnow didn’t play a game for 3 years - so he got about 1.5M to not play at all.

1) do you think Hannebery was trying to remain injured

2) at 27 why was he forecast to be done?

Effectively he was done, but at that age, surely there is a chance to rehab any injuries?

I had zero problem with his recruitment- at least we had a go!

Don’t think we lost anybody because of salary cap issues caused by recruiting Hannebery.
If it wasn’t him getting the money it would have gone to somebody just as undeserving.
It didn’t work but don’t think it did any harm.

IMO it did tied up a lot of money for 3 years that we could not use on someone who could actually get on the park

Perhaps but give we traded all our picks away in that time I don’t think we had much currency to bring anybody else in.
Didn’t stop us getting Crouch.
Certainly didn’t lose anybody due to money.
No fan of the deal but just think it hurt us.

All just smells of desperation to me Hanners ,Hill big contracts on big money no reward . Yes we need to get talent to the club but don't sell the farm to get them & yeah we didn't give up a lot to get Hanners but the length of the contract & the amount of money is just really bad management knowing he was really struggling at the Swans . Sugar coat both recruitments all you like but bottom line is they are both another edition to the book of St.Kilda failures

The problem I have is we knew he was really struggling to get on the park at Sydney hence Sydney were very keen to off load him & if we had given him a 2 year contract to see if we could turn his injury problems around maybe but 4 years was just f--king dumb as I said on another post typical St.Kilda

So what????

We don’t recruit any players?!

At the time, we were on the nose and NO ONE wanted to come to StK

Hannebery was a triple AA Premiership player who’d played 200 games in 10 years of AFL
Fully fit - he was an ELITE afl player!

We took a gamble that we could rehab his Hammies

But could not!

That’s recruiting and trading

Perhaps we could have done more due diligence - I distinctly remember AR being surprised at how bad his soft tissue injuries were. Our Med staff ok’d it and made the mistake.

People seem to be angry at Dan for being injured. Not sure anyone on here is a footballer, let alone a footballer who has been plagued by injury

It sucks big time!!!

Never been angry with Dan, frustrated maybe it's not Dan's fault 100% on the clubs shoulders . IMO there was plenty of evidence to be cautious & we went gung hoe & the rest is history
