Just announced on Channel 7 - Hannebery to retire

Post: # 1975555Post Bruce G McAbee »

Dan Hannebery to announce retirement.
I'm happy it's happening but also sad thinking of what could have been.
I wonder if there's an off-field position we could utilise him in.

Think of me long enough to make a memory.

Below is an email response of one I forwarded to the club on the weekend.

Thankyou for your feedback and email.

Our intention heading into this year was to make finals, and while not mathematically impossible, it’s now out of our hands which is not where we wanted to be.

There is still some footy to be played this year, and we hope the results will be in our favour but if this doesn’t come to fruition, we’ve seen some positive growth from our core players and as well as some important development from our youngsters.

The development work hasn’t been just limited to our first-year players – we have been embedding it throughout our program to get the most out of our players and it’s an area we want to continue to invest in.

The competition is tighter than ever, so we know that to have that finals success, we need to keep evolving and improving our program so we can bring sustained success to the club.

There have been some important learnings from this season, and we’ll be proactive in reviewing what did and didn’t work but for now, our focus if firmly placed on ending our season strongly against the Swans.

Everyone here at the football club, from the President, CEO and Senior Coach down, is committed to do everything they can to bring success to the Saints.

We’re not shying away from the fact that this season did not reach the outcomes we set for ourselves, and the expectations we know our fans rightly hold.

As such, we’ll be thorough assessing the season to see what improvements can be made to ensure we don’t continue to linger just outside the top 8.

If there is anything else that we can assist with, feel free to reach out.

Kind Regards,

Well that answers that question.

Shame it didn't work out, but his body just kept failing.

Came to us when no-one was interested and at least added some leadership.

They also suggested that Ryder would also not be offered a contract and would also be retiring.

While both decisions seemed to be speculative, they seemed to think they had firm ground to be making them.

Yeah, maybe we don't dance on his grave quite so quickly.

He tried to get his body right, paid for medical treatment himself, took a pay cut, and pulled on the jumper 15 times more than anyof us have.

No doubt it's been a major fail, but not really Dan's fault.

The question is what was in the email for such a response to be provided

The response covers the position of every Club which does not win the premiership - so the 17 Clubs which need to review performance to bridge the gap to the premiership Club

And even the premiership side looks for improvement to stay ahead of the chasing pack

That is the competition

And St Kilda is part of that competition

St Kilda has deficiencies across its List - as do all sides given the construct of that List (including salary caps)

A determining factor is a healthy List

Because the construct of the List (so Drafting players from the Under 18 competitions) will see injuries impact on any Club

In my opinion, in the first instance, you need mature players with class in key positions and build around them

Under them you introduce youth - that youth then transitioning to key roles as they gain experience

It is a never ending process

A process all at St Kilda (and every other Club) are committed to, 100%

That the Club has responded is a credit to the Club

That an email was sent resulting in a response not so much

If both Ryder and Hannebery choose not to continue with their AFL careers, both will be sadly missed

Simply, along with Hill, they represented our class, experienced players

The players you need to build a successful side

If you are looking at a core of players 30 years of age and over to provide experience and class, St Kilda have Ross and Webster

And therein lies a problem

Look at Geelong and who they recruit, so Higgins from North Melbourne and Smith from Hawthorn for starters

Neither Ross nor Webster are of the class and influence of Smith and what he is bringing to Geelong

Before we get to the other Clubs in the competition

Maybe Hanners & Paddy won't have a say in it & yes Paddy will be missed.

No doubt it's been a major fail, but not really Dan's fault.
I don't get this.

Nobody ever says (said) it was Dan's fault.

Cudos to him and his manager.

4 years and 4 good games.

Now we have a slot in the squad ..thank goodness.

Can he coach?

Enjoy your retirement Dan, hopefully playing 17 games in 4 seasons wasn't too taxing for you.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Well that makes the decision easier then. If he played this week and picked up 25+ classy touches I would've been tempted to give him a one year contract on base pay with higher than normal match payments. Overall his recruitment was an absolute disaster and it's a shame that his career never got going at the saints.

I'm hoping that we don't nudge Paddy out the door though. Imagine if we push him out the door, don't pick up another good ruckman and then we make finals and Marshall gets injured. He was BOG in our only finals win of the past 11 years, is still one of the best tap ruckmen in the comp and is dangerous up forward. We'd just need to manage him very, very carefully.

Paddy is such a weapon, re watched our first game vs Geelong today, and Paddy is the weapon they couldn't control
