Montagna on Saints
https://omny.fm/shows/dead-set-legends- ... ded-clarko
Worth listening to Joey M (5:30 onwards) on this in summary
1. Saints have topped up - 26yr old + not good enough to challenge for a flag
2. Need clean out bring in better quality talent
3. Can’t rely on King, Windhager etc development as others sides youth doing same - not about being a little bit better it’s about how do you leapfrog other teams??
4. Method/game …outside pressure not sure what it is….gane plan outdated - all pressure based then kick - mark to a player……Cats others have already worked out and gone away from that …
5. King yes they need to work on goal kicking but Lions had large chunks of game Saints weren’t competitive in that too has to be focus
Pretty honest assessment we as a club to me are guilty of:
1 terribly overrating this list (is that what Ratten sold them on??)
2. Game plan - outdated

Re: Montagna on Saints
It's incredibly worrying how much talent the Filth has.
Daicos boys, Ginnivan (who may get found out and be brought back to the pack)
Jamie Elliott, etc.
Darcy Moore, JDG and Moore
Sure we have Windy, Owens, NWM, who are looking like our future...
but we need a lot more, more quality, like Montagna says...

Re: Montagna on Saints
Scary thing is we need more talent plus coaching gane plan overhaul as Narkle BF notes on our game plan:
It’s pretty much the same as Ratten’s “Setanta’s little helpers” gameplan he used to have at Carlton where he’d bomb it long on Setanta’s head for Betts and co. to pick up the crumbs.
Problem is, Max is a thoroughbred with high intelligence who doesn’t like playing the role of one dimensional battering ram like Setanta did. You can see he’s a bit dead in the eyes (don’t blame him) that his role is basically boiled down to contesting and bringing the ball to ground with our mids kicking to a hotspot.
If the ball is kicked in front of King, he’ll be unstoppable. The long bomb kick should be a rare exception, not the rule.
This needs to be the whole focus of pre-season. If not, we’ll lose King, he won’t keep pushing s**t up a hill. He’s not Setanta O’Hailpin.

Without actually saying so, I think Joey was suggesting that we trade Hill. Probably Jones too. Nonody's going to trade for Hannebury.

As he said there is no point getting marginally better …that’ll just leave us 8-10
We need to be a serious challenger there us 2 clear things needed to do that:
1. Trade out some of those in the 26+ bracket - even if that means next year we don’t play finals
2. Overhaul coaching ranks and game plan - we simply must develop a more structured approach players understand up forward and including transition from defence
We have the bones IMO we can’t rely on development alone - we’ve seen Clarke Coffield Billings all stall for various reasons and most sides will be developing
To become the best 1 & 2 crucial
Board needs balls

Re: Montagna on Saints
Unfortunately Hill and Jones won't be traded while the bloke who brought them in is our CEO. More likely they'll trade promising players like Bytel and Conolly.

Bytel is less assured as we have his type
Connolly can use the ball - he could be a weapon you don’t trade that
No they’ll have to trade names not kids to get 2nd/early 3rd round options

Re: Montagna on Saints
If you watched Sandringham's game closely yesterday, you would have noticed that Bytel is an on field leader, something the senior team lacks. He also has the quickest hands of any player on our list.
There would be 15 players I would show the door before him.

We cannot afford to rebuild
We’d be like Hawthorn or North Melbourne for 3 years
Then maybe 3 years climbing
And what guarantees that we would even climb
It would be our death knell

Re: Montagna on Saints
Some anonymous bloke on BF says we lost the game because King couldn't kick a goal after his teammates worked their arses off to get him a shot within 15m directly in front, not once but 5 times. Says he's not good at maths but he calculated King only needed to convert 3 of the gifts handed to him on a platter and we win and remain in finals race.
This bloke over at BF really understands footy if you ask me.

Not team footy.
We need players who play 'team-first'.
Bye bye to both

You should tell the bloke on BF he's a fkhead because they weren't all sodas 15 m out. His first point was actually a snap on the run after picking up a loose ground ball
Tim Membrey also missed two relatively easy set shots. One late in the dying minutes of the third and one in the last quarter. Windhager also missed a relatively easy set shot in the last qt and Butler and Hill and Steele and others fumbled and couldn't get their hands on the footy when we were dominating the play and dominating inside 50's in the middle stages of the last quarter
...and yet we continue to blame 1 person for the loss. I initially went pretty hard at him too and wanted to scapegoat him but that's NOT how team sport works

Re: Montagna on Saints
Yes but the bloke on BF also said that it's all the Coaches fault so it's not just one person's fault, that makes it two people's fault. He says Ratts can't coach and King can't kick a goal to save himself.Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 15 Aug 2022 2:47amVortexVortex wrote: ↑Sun 14 Aug 2022 11:45pm Some anonymous bloke on BF says we lost the game because King couldn't kick a goal after his teammates worked their arses off to get him a shot within 15m directly in front, not once but 5 times. That's pretty bad isn't it Scollo, as you say it's a team game and all the teams I ever played in had a FF who could kick goals and a coach who had a game plan.
The bloke over at BF is a genius if you ask me.

Re: Montagna on Saints
Rebuild is a dirty word at St Kilda- Watters tried to get it going when came on board and wanted flush out the deadwood and move some popular names, but the club was too gutless to do it. We have had 10 years of going nowhere since.

Re: Montagna on Saints
They couldn’t do a full rebuild and risk losing any of their older players. The sales guy and CEO could have lost their jobs because they already promised LEDified and St George Bank and JELD-WYN that those players would be available for the marketing campaigns
Plus…the captain and some of the staff had convinced the President and the football director and the board in late 2013 that they were going to quickly become a contender again in just a few years time. It was written in the spreadsheet

Does BF ever quote Saintsational as an authoritative source?Vortex wrote: ↑Sun 14 Aug 2022 11:45pm Some anonymous bloke on BF says we lost the game because King couldn't kick a goal after his teammates worked their arses off to get him a shot within 15m directly in front, not once but 5 times. Re: match coaching
For what it’s worth, out favorite boys on the Sunday Footy Show said that St Kilda set up well in the second half on Friday night.
We were terrible in the first…so go figure, but the second half was about our denying centre corridor to Brisbane. It was pleasing to see that something worked. Disturbing to see that we started the game so badly.
Windhaeger tagging Neil was also praised by Buckley and Lyon on SEN.
They are obviously doing some things right.
But there is no denying it’s a season in which we just went sideways.

At least Richo got another gig in the AFL. Ratts would as well, easily.
Where is Watters now? He was persona non grata and made himself unemployable.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
