Coaches:Can they borrow from other sports?

I think Aussie rules can take a lot from netball. I've just been watching the Aus Diamonds V RSA at the Comm Games. Boy, do these Diamonds know how to play and connect in transition. It's not the same as football, but the principles and positioning are very similar. Forwards, Mids, Defence. It's is a delight to watch it all work and how they time their leads and passes to advantage. The positioning and timing is spot on. Errors become advantages. Can the coaches see the potential to learn from netball and for the Saints to get to that level?

I think we are good for coaching but it sounds like we should look at recruiting some of their players who are good at timing their leads and passes to advantage.

As I understand it, AFL coaching staff have learnt a lot in recent decades from 1. Rugby league (re tackling), 2. Basketball (shifting between zoning and man on man defences), 3. Hockey/soccer (flooding and other crowding defensive strategies).

I’m sure AFL coaches watch netball and pick up some ideas from it.

We seem to steal and butcher rules from other sports. Why they can't bite the bullet on goals (however it goes through the sticks) & last to touch in play = turnover.

Instead we "rely" on goal review technology & umpire interpretation a.k.a. mind reading.

Yes, we can learn from other sports in terms of coaching. As the game evolves this becomes more important as we do bastardise parts from other sports.

Aspects which are used today. Neesham was ahead of his time. They couldn’t defend it though and would get smashed going the other way.

We played Freo at Waverly back in the early 90's I was at the game & their game style just confused the f--k out of us & we had no answer & they fu--ing killed us . Unfortunately for Neesham & Freo teams worked them out & the game plan dead & buried by the end of his stay as coach

Historically, wherever Saints coaches borrow from, i wish they'd stop doing it, it doesn't bring success.

The other innovation by Charlesworth was the introduction of sports psychologist monitoring players at training and on game day and providing feedback on how the players are responding to coaches messaging.

Ferguson replied that he didn't have any players who can't kick.

How's that for a novel idea?!

That’s right

Elite coaches aren’t there to ‘teach’ player how to kick… they are there to instruct good kicks where to kick the ball.

Junior and development coaches teach skill

Senior coaches teach game plans and structures.

AFL is NOT underage or local footy - it’s elite players.

Just watched an interview with the head coach of the Japanese Womens Olympic team for 2021
This team of japanese midgets went from nobodies to winning silver behind America
They were already pretty quick and just improved fitness
Then he looked at the one aspect of the game they could utilise and that revolved solely around three point shots
He drilled the side mercilessly when many of them couldnt even make the distance into becoming some of the best three point shooters going round

3 pointers = just another skill of the game
