Oh my God..Saints fans...I haven't even watched this game in its entirety, but there are so many outstanding and remarkable things for Sainters to remember and appreciate if you call yourself a Saints fan. And I am the Gestapo chief of fans! lol nlol

(see how I made a new internet acronym - nice one Shane)

Take a look...

1) Mighty Max incredible mark first qtr
2) R Clarke was no dud...he had class...I never knew
3) Allan Murray...WTF? ....talent and skilll...what happened there?
4) the incredible talent on the field..in both teams...for the Saints, the usual suspects..for Hawthorn, Crawf, Buddy, their usual mid-field stars..don't think Lewis played but the guy who went to Brisbane..plus any number of household names..
5) Grant Thomas...you gotta give GT some respect..you can FEEL the energy out there

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Going on that game

GT

Obviously a far better coach than Clarkson and Hardwick - who were in the Hawthorn

That is due to the fact that coaches determine results

What I did notice was the good to watch style we played - flicked the ball around in close then weren’t afraid to go long to a one on one - we moved the ball very quickly

Also
WTF happened to Rath Clarke? He looked like a 250 game gun in this game (was only 20)
He ended up a maligned 100 gamer delisted

Matt Maguire - injury in 2006 travesty
Luke Ball - ditto (he was a fkn gun!)

The pure ball use to leading players was freaky good

How did Hawthorn go past us
Better management

And we were shockingly unlucky with career limiting/ending injuries
Hamill, X.Clarke, Maguire, Ball, Kosi,
Knees
Hayes x 2
Goddard

StK Curse
That side should have won 2-3 flags from 04-12

Possible answers to your questions ( some here say)

Raph clarke developed siezures and i think the medication required had some issue on how his career developed.
Ball and Maguire run into the ground by GT with both developing OP. This took them a year to get over. Management of young players was poor back then - no thought to "rested" to ease them in from the U18 to AFL rigours.
Unlucky with Maguire broken leg, many other football injuries which all clubs have . Wasn't training services what they should have been -dont know- were players pushed to play injured - maybe

Blew top 4 spot in 2004 which ultimately cost a GF
Blew a 3 goal lead at 3/4 time 2005 as GT was one trick pony
2006 - went into a final with injured players and got found out.

Hawthorn had a better coach, better administration and leadership not trying to out do each other and sober, better salary cap management, more balanced list and better recruiting of established player - Lake, Burgoyne, Dew, Gunston (not established at that stage), Guerra, vs Peake, Ray, Lovett (OMG), Penny (unlucky with this one),

How does a one-trick pony get a cursed team to a 3 goal lead in a final?

easy that one trick worked well and was very good, however when the opposition changed things up had no defensive side to the game or change the tempo of the game .

Still can’t get over how good Ralph and Bally looked!

Did we lose Lenny in 06? Goddard in 07?

We can go around in circles - there are those who think GT was the best coach we have had in the last 40 years, and those who think he inherited talent
I sit somewhere in between. I think he was a coach that was able to get to a certain level (good level) but believed he was always right and therefore unable to have the foresight that he may have needed a plan b or c .

He set himself up to fail in 2006 when in the pre season he demanded to over see contracts and wanted total control of the football department. He was given this, however with this came the total accountability. From a club perspective it was a win win for Butters and co - if he succeeds you get the 2nd flag , if not you get rid of him. His ego was his undoing.
A brilliant businessman and made more than i will ever see but as a coach probably got the most out of himself and knowledge however at the end of the day that wasn't what was needed to win a flag.
