He is over rated by many
Possessions and involvement low for a player his size..
Struggles to hit scoreboard as well
I don’t think many here disagree with that comment
However from what we saw las weekend and the comments during the week from the club , he deserved to keep his spot ahead of others
What it says to me , is that the club is not holding some players accountable for their performances

Is Ratts playing the long game (pun intended).
Is Ratts giving Butler enough chances to redeem himself?
It's a toss up between Butler and Long.
One of them will be cut/offered for trade.
Looks like he prefers Butler though, with so many chances.
Would have long over butler anyday
From memory, Richo gave Weller and Lonie plenty of chances to find form.
Can't recall whether Ratts or Richo cut them at season's end.
My brain is wiping most memories of Richo's Reign of Terror, to avoid trauma
Maybe Ratts is keeping Butler in the 22, so at exit interview, he can be shown some graphs of his declining numbers since 2020, and tell him 'hey, we kept playing you in the hope you'd regain your mojo'

Weller and Butler- 2 things in common
1. Butler came from Tigers, Weller went to Tigers
2. Weller hurt his lower leg, played a bit in VFL then came back but was never the same, played without any sense or logic
Butler hurt his leg (to be fair, he's been unimpressive for ages though)

Again, one needs to be mindful of turning this into a saviour player complex type issue.
Long is a player that in general, at this moment in time lacks the consistency to established in the top 22. As has been pointed out... he generally doesn’t get enough of the ball.
However...
His actual effort in running, getting to contests, tackling, providing mongrel etc is first rate IMO. And it was on display for all to see in the one quarter he played last week which was fantastic.
Last week, I comfortably had him above Butler, Higgins, Byrnes, NWM, Hill, Paton, and maybe even Wood.
There’s something to be said about actual competitiveness when a 1/3 of the list didn’t show up to play at all and the one that was dropped is the one that came on late, attacked the man and the contest... and actually tried to win us the game,
I’m gobsmacked personally
It’s really really hard to get a sense of what it is that Ratten actually values as a coach.

We’ll said You put it better than I could have but thought exactly that
At a time like this long is what we need.

When you get the ball and have time and space and put the ball on your boot sideways you get dropped.
Long cannot kick.
Bingo.
But the coach should be sacked for dropping him apparently.
Are we talking about Mason Wood who managed to kick a banana straight across goal?
Or any other number of atrocious kicks in the night???
Or maybe “bingo”
The coach and his selection crew have NFI
At least he got Sharman right hey?
Gun defender nowadays

But the coach is above question apparently….
Great post Skeptic
The whole teans efforts are putrid
So we drop the 1 guy who gave us a spark ????
Even Hodge noticed it
Laughable

I recon Wood is one of the players Ratts was saying is lucky to be in the side and is on a last chance. Long wouldn't get a game at another club becaue who cares if he can run around like chook with his head cut off, he hasn't got the skills to be playing AFL.
The fact of the matter is players like Long and Wood aren't going to be cable of helping us win our next cup and so I'll be more inclined to be critical of Ratts if he keeps them on the list beyond this year. Because that's when I'll be confused about what he stands for but at the moment he's been very strong about player accountability.
Sharman is lucky to be getting a game due to our shortage of tall players in key positions.
i reckon long must be not playing the role he is instructed to. can't think on any other measures, in comparison to many of his team mates, for dropping him.

Yep, clearly displayed too much energy and heart when he came on last week

It's getting more and more of a joke with selection as each week passes.
I cannot understand how Wood and a few others got saved again and Long is omitted but then, what do you expect from a club that let Acres go?
That decision will haunt us too. Acres is the type of player we needed to keep and now are badly missing.

been impressed by Long this year
Coming off a low base
THought he should have been cut last year. behind Lonie.
like his running and some of his kicks into 50 have been nice, plus a few F50 snaps. Some brain fades.
Like him more than Wood...which is not saying much.
Been lucky to get games early. Low possie player and not a great mark.
Still thought he might be capable of playing a blinder..and maybe he still is?
Agree that last week he was a refreshing change to the complex of the team after 3/4 time
The thing about Long is he plays for a club who doesn't know anything about football at AFL level, just another player who is going to have a wasted career.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

That maybe true about Long next year we’ll see
But we aren’t talking about next year .. we’re talking now
Right now this side can’t even give effort
Last 5 games 17th for % 18th for contested ball
The 1 player universally agreed as coming on, having an impact (Luke Hodge called him the spark in the last Qtr …but what would he know..)
And he gets dropped from the side so pretenders like Dan Butler get to pose round in the forward line never troubling a scorer?? (speaking of headless chooks…)
Once again..super logic in that!
Sharman going well for a delisted free agent btw

So Ratts said there are players who will be lucky to be playing this week and are on their last chance, so who are they?, this is my list:
