Ok they would have picked another mid then. Fact is there list was on par with ours they were desperate for a key forward and got gifted one. Meaning they could just add to there midfield. Dougal Howard, Brad Hill, Matt Crouch, and Zak Jones were going nowhere else.
Adam Cerra was going nowhere else.
Tom Lynch was going nowhere else other than Richmond (and as a free agent).
Steven May and Jake Lever were going nowhere else other than Melbourne.
Joe Daniher was going nowhere else.
The gift of Selwood and Hawkins.
The walk in of two of the best players in the AFL Cameron and Danger
Six other clubs had a pick before Geelong selected Selwood.
So every club that has picked up a father/son selection over the journey was gifted that selection?

In that same draft, we chose Armitage over Jack Riewoldt. Go figure!CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 21 Jul 2022 12:31pmOk they would have picked another mid then. We had Riewoldt Kosi and Fergus Watts we needed a mid. If Geelong had to take a key position player we may have got Selwood.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 21 Jul 2022 12:32pmIn that same draft, we chose Armitage over Jack Riewoldt. Re: We gotta hit the draft, hard
Curly is correct. Under the old F/Son rules, you didn't have to give up anything to get them. So, under todays rules if Geelong had to use pick 7 for Hawkins ( which they would) then they wouldn't have had pick 7 left to use on Selwood.
So, yes, Selwood was a gift from the AFL

Re: We gotta hit the draft, hard
We had Hayes, Goddard, Dal Santo, Harvey, Montagna, Thompson, Jones, Ball, Baker, Gram, Powell, Fiora, McQualter and Leigh Fisher...Pretty sure we were OK the middle for a few seasons.
Fergus Watts? Injured Fergus Watts!
We had an aging Fraser Gehrig and Kosi with a fractured skull on the list.

Watts was highly rated when he was drafted and we were covered for key forwards. Half the list you rattled off were on the way out so a midfielder was the priority.

Hayes (26 in 2006) 2010 Norm Smith medallist
Goddard (21 in 2006) 2010 Norm Smith runner up
Dal Santo - drafted in 2001. Age 22 in 2006
Montagna - drafted in 2001. Age 22 in 2006
Ball - drafted in 2001. Age 22 in 2006
Gram - drafted in 2001. Age 22 in 2006
Baker - drafted in 1998. Age 26 in 2006
Only Thompson, Harvey, and Jones really toward end of career...But Banger was still playing great footy.

Baker was a tagger. Spent a lot of time running with the oppositions prime mover. Ended up in the back pocket.
Gram was only a HB because of the quality of other players ahead of him.
Goddard was used almost everywhere.
Wingers are still midfielders. Pretty sure Joey had his fair share of on ball time.

Re: We gotta hit the draft, hard
Anyone else get the sense Grundy is edging closer to us. No love from Pies, wants to stay in sunny Vic. We need a ruckman, most other Vic clubs don't. Its maybe just settling on how much Collingwood top up his salary. They would want to cut their losses wouldn't they. And they would not see us as a premiership threat (why would any team).

Would we pull the trigger, surely Hannas is cooked and frees up cash.
Amon going to Hawks it seems
Taranto & De Goey, who knows....
Would depend on what the Pies pay, which I can't imaging would be significant as there is 5 years to run on his contract and
Treloar is still being funded by them (partially)
He is a very good player when up and going....and would be the succession plan to Ryder finishing.

So from F/S they got the best midfielder of the past 20 years, the best fullback of the past 20 years, and one of the best key forwards of the past 20 years.

We also had three gifts (for being hopeless)
2 x priority picks (2000/2001)
Bumped up to pick 1 in 2002
And took Goddard (instead of who we were going to select with pick 3 - Salopek

Why, he's not a back flanker or a 193cm Key defender or a VFL ruckman.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

And Geelong, after securing those F/S picks for a bag of chips, got to keep their first, second, and third round picks during those years.

We, The saints, can hit the draft as hard as we like, that doesn't mean we'll get our selections correct, history says we'll F*** most of them up.
