Tony isn’t the villain here and the angst shouldn’t get directed at him. Like everyone he’s entitled to his own opinion and if he shares some tidbits from the club, that’s ok and no need to launch at him

They break my heart tony.
I don't think that of all the many thousands of matches I have watched in over 70 years, I have seen a more piss poor dispiriting performance.
If they had the guts and heart of Long they wouldn't have found themselves being thrashed for 3/4 of the game.
They were truly pathetic.

Re: Positives
Gutless, heartless, pissweak and a pack of front runners with the mental fragility of a soap bubble .... all waiting for someone else to do the hard lifting but not wanting to do it themselves
You think at this stage the players could get together to formulate their own gameplan knowing that the coaches themselves are devoid of any ideas and inspiration
themselves ...... total lack of leadership and intelligence
Incredibly disappointing

Re: Positives
In some ways, at least for three quarters, our worst performance since the '80s.
We don't, to all intents and purposes, appear to have anything resembling a plan A, let alone a plan B.
Even if we did, there wouldn't be much point. Very few have the requisite skills, either by hand or foot.
As for decision making, where to start?
To be frank, I know we were gutless (apologies to Ben Long) but a gutsy effort would simple have papered over the cracks.
The Dogs movement down the ground looked like training drills. Three or four consecutive moves planned well in advance. By contrast when one of our guys gets the ball, he almost invariably has absolutely no idea what he's going to do with it.

I bet the brains trust at season's end don't address any of the glaring issues.Devilhead wrote: ↑Sat 16 Jul 2022 12:14am Once again our one tall forward set up failed dismally

As is needing another tall key back (additional to Howard)

While we wait though Steele Sinclair Wilkie Marshall Howard all approach the wrong side of 30 and plenty of others like Hill Ryder Crouch Ross Webster will or could be long gone
Looks like we are or could be well and truly in no man's land
They'll have their own thoughts, which when acted upon, will maintain mediocrity.

To justify signing Ratten we needed to be on the up
We aren’t
Which means we are definitely in no man’s land and sinking
I was a big Lethlean fan, thought we need someone with his obvious rat cunning/guile to get us to the holy grail
But the decisions he’s now making (with Board backing it must be said) are disturbing and leave me thinking ..he might leave us in a bit of a mess
We’ve had 5 years of Hanners in the worst contract in AFL
Now rush to re-sign a coach for 2 more years who, once we finish 11-12 this year, will have taken us backwards every year he’s been here
On top of that a top-up drafting strategy, from a recruiter who I too thought was doing well, is failing and we are a list choc-full of B-C grade talent who wouldn’t get games elsewhere in top sides…
I’m concerned we have an inner circle at the club who have grossly overestimated where the team is at and their own abilities and what’s worse, they clearly just hunker down when challenged on their approach
“Brett Ratten is our long term coach” Lethlean adamantly declared
On what evidence base Simon ????? Do tell.

Re: Positives
It was Simon who decided Richo had to go after shadowing Richo for some weeks and had a big say in Brett taking over. There's no way he'll ever concede he might have erred with Richo's replacement.Teflon wrote: ↑Sun 17 Jul 2022 1:31amThat’s the thingWayne42 wrote: ↑Sun 17 Jul 2022 12:35amI bet the brains trust at season's end don't address any of the glaring issues.Devilhead wrote: ↑Sat 16 Jul 2022 12:14am Once again our one tall forward set up failed dismally

He wants a career, just like many in the AFL.
Simon should now look away from the coach and focus on the List mob and tell them to earn their keep or walk.
It would be nice if the collective Saints membership said we'll take a raincheck for season 2023 whilst we wait and see how you lot deal with incompetence.
Unfortunately. as a consequence, the AFL awards the Saints the Tassie licence.

I commend you saynta for sitting through to the last quarter. I left at 3/4 time. I could not bear it any longer. So I never got to see what Long did in the last quarter but I'm pleased for him that he was able to have an impact if what you said is correct.saynta wrote: ↑Sat 16 Jul 2022 8:50pm They break my heart tony.

Re: Positives
Biggest issue is that the players have lost belief. They have lost confidence, leading to frustration and almost giving up the fight.
At the game, you could feel the life get sucked out of them after the Marshall turnover and definately the Battle one.
This is where onfield leadership has to kick in and maybe our biggest problem.
I don't think we have exceptional leadership within the group, to lift the team at the moment something goes wrong in a game.
It's why a half fit Hannebery, would make us a 5 goal better team

They are mentally fragile to the point of being ridiculous, we all see it, it can be one moment that is so innocuous and the players crap their pants and give up, you see it literally happening before your eyes, you can pick the moment where they turn up their toes. It's insane.Crossy66 wrote: ↑Sun 17 Jul 2022 10:34am Biggest issue is that the players have lost belief. They have lost confidence, leading to frustration and almost giving up the fight.

Possibly, but it's also human. It's why developing teams recruit a luke Hodge type. He's a been there done that, can't be questioned. In the heat of the moment, he is picking up and encouraging the bloke that made a blue, letting him know it's ok.Vortex wrote: ↑Sun 17 Jul 2022 10:55amThey are mentally fragile to the point of being ridiculous, we all see it, it can be one moment that is so innocuous and the players crap their pants and give up, you see it literally happening before your eyes, you can pick the moment where they turn up their toes. I get the feeling that many of our leaders don't have the confidence to lead, because they don't have that sort of standing in the group.
Great leaders can turn around a team in a heartbeat, can install belief.
