Players not worth bothering with any more
These are the players that should be let go (each by whatever the method that is most productive) as none of them will assist us to get to where we need to be:
Joyce, Butler, Billings, Webster, Ross, HILL, Sharman, Allison, Bytel, Geary, Hannebery, Kent
I think one can conclude that when you have that many players who are putting a drag on the team, then you are going to struggle.
More brilliant recruiting required - big defenders and quality mids required.

Rest is spot on
I’d add Wood (just a player imo)
Our future is
King, Windhager, Owens, NWM, Marshall. Sincs, only King a star there

Bit hard to blame the coach with that many spuds on the list.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
It really doesn't matter who we would recruit.
We can't develop footballs. Hell, we can't even keep the players on the Park?
King - Once in a generation pick - would be already leading the AFL goal kicking if he was at most other clubs.
Hannaberry would have played three to four times more at most other clubs.
Plugger would have kicked kid close to 200 goals in a Season if he was at most other clubs.
We blame the Players - we blame the Coach.
But it's the rest - from the President down to the Supporters (me being one), where its all to blame.
I didn't effect the outcome of tonight, but the Club - The acceptance of mediocrity - and we all go along with it.
I'm nearly 60 and saw the s*** in the 80s only to be teased again this year - 8 and three turns into 9 and 7 with a side that is better talented tan earlier in the year.
To be frank, tonight, we turned our toes up in the second half, and we should have been 5 goals up at half time.
Not for the first time, mentally weak, and bereft of skills.
Will it ever change???

Speaking of our shite in the 80's, how would today's media have coped with the Saints and how woeful they were back then, it would have been hilarious. North now as an example.oboe wrote: ↑Sun 10 Jul 2022 1:29am It really doesn't matter who we would recruit.

As i remember it, footy journalism was much better back then, if you were shite, you were pretty much ignored in the press, save for small column inches. Now, the fookers want everyone sacked.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
I might add that it’s weird that one of the first reactions of disappointed posters after a loss is to create a hit list of players they’d like to get rid of.
The days of priority picks are almost gone, so clearing out your list and tanking for draft picks simply isn’t going to work.
Dream on.

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
It must be in the recruitment process that we have a massive failure in …..we would be better if we headhunted the collingwood recruiting crew …… they were supposedly going thru a rebuild but look like playing finals ….their players always seem hungry to get the pill and deliver it well …..half our team look like they couldn’t give a flying f what happens where the hell they’re kicking it to or handballing it to the feet of someone who generally is in more than likely already covered by opponents.

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
it's not our players, it's that we don't develop them as well as other clubs to play consistently at or near their peak. it's why we sometimes look a team full of future talent, and other times a team full of spuds.
we also are very poorly coached on game day, tactically and emotionally. look how poorly performed the team are on marquee games - the expectation to do well seems a burden rather than a boost. it seems a very poor culture stagnates the club and it takes an exceptional coach to overcome that for a brief period before the quagmire either claims them or spits them out as an undesirable foreign body.
the main issue seems to be a lack of belief - in self, system, and the club. by all involved. we are making up numbers, doing a job, existing.

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
The current admin and coach inherited a crap list.
They’ve improved it, but there are still gaps, which were apparent last night. Particularly:
1. We have some good talls, but with really no backup. Last night demonstrated that we can’t really replace Howard. It would be the same situation if either King or Membrey were out injured.
2. Our midfield is competitive in tight, but lacks creative attacking players other than Gresham. We get the ball out of the middle or breaking out of defence, and then it ends up in the hands of Ross or Crouch or Steele, who aren’t creative enough with it. Not their fault: that’s not the sort of players they are.
I reckon that, if Howard and de Goey had played in our team last night, we’d have won. We’re really close to being contenders, but we don’t quite have the cattle.
Freo on the other hand look like a serious threat for the flag.

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
Sure, there are players we would not miss. Some are infuriatingly frustrating the way they play as is the way they are indulged by the selectors (there's no one else? - get a grip on what that attitude means for long term performance). Currently I'm anti Jones and Higgins. Wish NWM would be slightly better each game rather than play alternatively good then missing, but very young. Unfortunately he is a mid and his down days really hurt. Other teams rising stars seem to be able to maintain a minimum standard, possibly improving gradually without regressing (?); their development and team roles seem nicely tailored, not throw in the deep end stuff.
However.
How is it with the game in the balance, Butler, a senior highly experienced player - however bad the umpiring decision is - feels he has the right to gift the opposition a goal so he can personally vent, right at the end of a quarter.
How is it Jones is allowed to run around with apparently no purpose and make error after error in his unguided haste.
How come the team was not able to dig deep and give a worthy response, even if Freo are much more professional than us. Can't we establish a floor on poor performance or do we need to do worse than, say, the Sydney performance to show we haven't nearly bottomed out yet. Good performances like the one against Carlton should mean the all too frequent pitiful efforts will not be accepted as a natural fluctuation in bio rhythms or "personal" issues. It means the players are not mentally fit and if they cannot hack pressure after being made physically fit, given a role and a game plan then there is hardly any point persevering with them - if you want to play finals
As much as I don't want to come to the conclusion we are poorly coached and prepared and self regulate on the field it seems to me the predictable way we fold under the pressure of any occasion, opportunity or burst by the opposition defies any other explanation.
Mentally weak, poorly drilled, do not minimise weaknesses or maximise strengths. Team looks rudderless, leaderless. Rhetoric sounds pathetic and clueless.
How are they going to stem the current death spiral? Board and Pres have endorsed what is happening - to me that is beyond comprehension. Why, what do they see that we don't and the ladder position doesn't reflect?

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
Wouldn’t have Hill or Sharman on the list.
Just need to get Hill away from the backline, bloke doesn’t have a defensive bone in his body. Stick him on the wing and let him run.
And for Christ sake, invest in ACTUAL mids at the draft and trade table, no more flankers / small forwards!

Id add Gresham too that list he is the classic one way runner, he way too slow and has no defensive game at all. He is also another scrubby kick, the club moved on Dunstan for those reasons. I cant understand why Gresham doesnt draw more attention on the exact same weaknesses.

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
Mehe Baba summed it up pretty well.
Our playing list is short of where it needs to be
Critics, don't let your demands exceed the limits of reality
We have gone some way to rebuilding this team after the debacle of the Pelchen/Elshaug era, but more work needs to be done
We need:
Another 198cm+ key defender
Another creative midfielder
A third marking, mobile forward
A ruckman to replace the aging Ryder (2023 or 2024)
The fact that we're playing Mason Wood shows us our list is not where it needs to be ( no disrespect to Mason Wood). Having Joyce as the back up key defender is also a sign
As much as we're pleased with Windhager and Wanganeen-Milera, the reality is the rest of the team are carrying those guys at the moment.
It won't be until 2024 that we see Owens, NWM, and Windhager start to carry to load. And it's important that Sharman and Heath develop

Pity no one else wants them. We could probably get some half decent picks for Billings and Ross. Oh wait, we just re-signed them. Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
If you can't execute basic skills well consistently, then you have no place on the list.
How many easy marks did we spill last night? How many missed hanbballs? How many off target kicks?
You can't take the game on through the middle when you can't execute 30m kicks.

Re: Players not worth bothering with any more
Apart from some sapping umpiring decisions the commentary to me was the task set for Wilkie in the absence of Howard
So instead of the 191cm Wilkie playing to his strengths he was responsible for a guy of what size?
And that threw the structure of our defence out
Battle has performed admirably and Highmore was honest - but the lack of Howard (and Carlisle who we have been unable to replace) shows
And the same at the other end with King (noting Ryder and Marshall are deployed forward when not in the ruck)
Then you get to the mids where we have players who do not “carry the lines” by carrying the ball toward the goals (note Ross who just does not present the danger of running forward with ball in hand and more needs the ball to catch up with him hence possessions under pressure and rushed disposal)
The summary is that we are still a few players short (excuse the pun) and need to trade, chase out of contract players and draft
Acknowledging where our deficiencies are because those deficiencies are most obvious
