I have no problem taking Ball ahead of Judd, that one was just bad luck.

Look at how good pre-OP Ball was, could hold his own with Judd IMO.

Good call Luke was a gun in the first couple of years but Op f--cked him . Lost his grunt speed & lost his ability to kick any more than 40 meters .He could kick a goal from 50 early in his career but in his later years struggled to kick one from 30.

Ball was Runner Up Best & Fairest in 2004 (team finished 3rd)
And won in 2005 and was an All Australian
Captain at 21yo in 2006

Not a bad start to his career

Had 3 severe injuries in 06/07 and was never the same play (albeit still a very decent player)

I forgot he won a Best and Fairest. Plus...runner up the year before!!

Quality person and quality leader who gave his all for the footy club. How can you treat a former Trevor Barker Medalist like that?

Ross valued Dempster ( the 2009 version) and Rob Eddie more than he valued Ball. Luke wasn't even sure of his spot in the Grand Final.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/bal ... e83vi.html

In Ross we trust (and boy did he shaft us) ...have a read of what the arrogant prick said about Luke;

"Look, Luke Ball in simple terms is this: Luke had a rich history with St Kilda, but the AFL is a professional sport and expectations are often set and not met by club or player. Clearly, along the line, there has been some expectations not met on both sides of the fence."

It wasn’t just Ball he dumped

He got rid of

Maguire and X.Clarke

3 of the 6 kids from the 2001 draft, who along with Roo, BJ and Kosi made a pact to win us a second flag.

Ross in 2009 and Pelchen in 2012 tore the heart out of St KFC and it was never repaired
Add to that Archie Fraser
And GTs decision to abandon TAS - set us back financially- I would have gone the opposite and increased our Tassie Partnership!

These decisions absolutely fkd the club for a decade

Ben McEvoy, Tom Lynch, Rhys Stanley traded out - went on to be good players at successful clubs

Brendon Goddard, Nick Dal Santo should have ended up 300 game StK legends!

Luke Ball a 200+ gamer

We gave Rossy boy his career and reputation and he gave us severe grief. That's not a fair exchange. Now reduced to being spoken down to by Caroline Wilson on a midweek low rating footy gossip show; how the mighty have fallen. Not mentioned in coaching gig conversations much anymore. The caravan limps on.

And still the best modern coach we’ve had but here we go again bashing Lyon
His record speaks for itself
And Luke Ball EVEN in his prime was nowhere near Chris Judd - a match winner
I’ve read some saints fans glorifying their own players beyond belief but this one takes the cake
It’s BM revisionist BS and any half decent objective footy fan knows it
Grant Thomas wanted Ball - Butters wanted Judd and had coached him at junior levels
Grant got his way - as always
West Coast got the best player in the game at that time and electrifying match winner
We got a serviceable mid who 2 years later couldn’t kick over a jam tin or run out of sight on a dark night
Trivia question: who was the braniac Saints coach who flogged Ball and mismanaged him through OP??????
Farkwit of the highest

With the list we got in those days, the drover's dog could have got us to a GF, and probably would have won as well.

If losing 3 GF and a draw is the ultimate failure as written above, how do you describe coaches who never get their team to a GF?

There are plenty of them.
Looking since the early 90’s.

Lyon had the team to win and couldn’t get them across the line.

They were cooked when Watters arrived, Rico & Ratts didn’t/don’t have GF teams in my opinion.

GT had the best most balanced list from an age, experience & talent perspective in my time following the Saints in 04-05 but couldn’t get us to a GF.

Stan got us there but was gone 2 years later.

Kenny had the top end talent but the list didn’t bat deep.

Blight helped us secure Roo & Kossie 😁

How do you rate them all?

I have a soft spot for Alves. Injuries leading up to the grandfinal killed him.

Same for Kenny plus that arswipe Ablett took out two of our best leading up to the Grandfinal in a year when 3rd got eliminated after one loss.

Fortune didn't favour Grant in a year when injuries again robbed us from reaching the ultimate game.

Hate that loser Lyin who I hold responsible for losing in 09 and 2010.

Blight was a mistake.

Ablett ended the GF chances of both teams that day in 1991. And I seem to remember we had spanked both Hawthorn and West Coast in the weeks before.

Cool.

I think your intense hatred for Lyon is clouding your judgment a bit but that’s ok as we all have our prejudices and biases.

Don’t forget, Max along with Ball went to Collingwood the following season and exposed our game plan and other useful intel to the enemy camp. They played a part in stitching us up in 2010.

Max was a great player and I still remember the Preliminary Final when he played on Buddy the season before. It was stuff of legends.

However, Hudghton was not part of the settled back 6 throughout the 2009 season. It was a winning combo. Statistically, one of the best ever in a home and away season.

if it makes you feel any better, if I could play god with alternative history, I’d select Max ahead of Zac. I would have played Ball more in the second half and I would have tagged Chapman with Dempster. I would have also played Gwilt instead of Andrew McQualter but I’m not sure if it would have made any difference to the final result and it’s a hypothetical, but it would be fun to know.

Look at how good pre-OP Ball was, could hold his own with Judd IMO.
Held his own with Judd??
Come on..
Yep, I stand by it.

Go back and watch him, was a gun. OP ruined any chance he had of reaching his potential. (By the way, why do we never hear about OP anymore, when at one stage it was everywhere?)

And on the other subject, Lyon was clearly a great coach, 3 GFs proves that. GT probably had a better list and couldn’t quite get there, but also very good.

Whilst Judd was obviously the better player... few were complaining that much about it in 03, 04 and 05

Ball was a gun.

It wasn’t til the OP really got hold of him that the standard dropped.

It’s one of the main reasons why I hate carrying players that are starting to develop recurring injuries. Just give them the time off, let them properly heal/recovery instead of playing impaired and give someone the opportunity

On the grand scale... what would it really have cost us to go through 06 with Ball on the sidelines and have him come back fit and firing in 07

More lies
Luke Ball walked FFS he didn’t like playing his role the club told him he was wanted but Luke took his bat and ball

Don't like the truth do you teffers?

Your man was the ultimate failure as a coach. 4 Grannies for no wins FFS.

The facts speak for themselves.

Sensible
Thank you
