Re: 2009 GF
What did Ball play?
50-60% game time - off the entire last quarter
23 or 24 possessions
Wettish day, in and under mid, Lenny being tagged!
Weird?!

Weird ? No, not from where I stand. Lyin said that in the heat of the moment, he just forgot about Ball.
But we all know that the Tosser Flosser is a proven liar , so I would take that with a grain of salt.
Ball didn't forget of forgive Lyin though, and was off to the filth like a shot.
As I have maintained for 13 years, that prick by playing a very ordinary footballer who had been on a drip in hospital overnight instead of Maxie and by screwing Ball over, he cost us flags in 2009 and 2010.
I still can't stand the sight of that thrice failed coach.

Re: 2009 GF
Double edged sword.
Lyon helped get the team there but failed 2.5 out of 3 games.
Easy to say after the fact but he should have pulled the trigger after BJ put us in front.

This was the most heart-wrenching loss I’ve witnessed. That team won their first 19 games and ended up with 20 wins for the home and away season. I still have nightmares over the missed shots on goal and that dreaded toe-poke from the Scarlett Pimple

Ol’ Ro$$y really did a number on us. Losing Luke Ball after that GF was devastatingsaynta wrote: ↑Thu 07 Jul 2022 7:45pmWeird ? No, not from where I stand. Lyin said that in the heat of the moment, he just forgot about Ball.

I still can’t believe Ro$$y couldn’t even hook up a trade for him, so we ended up losing an integral member of the team for nothing

Re: 2009 GF
I have a feeling Luke Ball did a deal with the filth during the 2009 season.
The club got word of it and the rest is history.
It also might explain why Ball has been coy about the whole thing.

He didn’t want to play Ross the bosses’ way.
You’re off.
Working class Protestant coach from Reservoir most likely did not take to self entitled Catholic Xavier boy from Kew.
It was a colossal stuff up.

Re: 2009 GF
I think the announcer at Telstra Dome at the time declared after our 15th consecutive win or something like that, that no team had ever won than many games to start a season and NOT gone on and won the flag. I immediately thought, “Oh s***”..Sainternist wrote: ↑Thu 07 Jul 2022 8:43pm This was the most heart-wrenching loss I’ve witnessed. Watching the the game live from the G (standing room) I had a very bad feeling that we had stuffed up during that second quarter and that we would live to regret it.
As it was happening, I immediately thought of Geelong the year before and Norf in 98 but it was happening to us. I began convulsing.
We blew it.

Yeah, we should have been 5 or 6 goals up at half time. The misses in the second quarter really came back to haunt us.SaintPav wrote: ↑Thu 07 Jul 2022 9:20pmI think the announcer at Telstra Dome at the time declared after our 15th consecutive win or something like that, that no team had ever won than many games to start a season and NOT gone on and won the flag. Spot on
This “Luke Ball would’ve saved us theory” is absolute BS trumpeted by 3 year old muppets
It’s so far off the truth it’s laughable
The game was lost in the first half
Simple goals missed (from the goal square FFS!!) on a wet n windy day we’re always going to bite
Cats - as they did in Rd 14 were always going to come but had we kicked 3-4 of those gettable goals we’d have won IMO
Ball was already out the door - petulant private schoolboy flog who didn’t like the home truths
Actually, I’ll go 1 step further
IF the club hadn’t of listened to the wanna be Warrnambool flog who insisted we draft Ball and instead gone for Judd like the Prez wanted….we’d have won multiple flags
But good ole GT knew best

7.7. to 7.1 at half time.
Schneider, Milne, McQualter all missed gimme's to this point. so make it 10.4 to 7.1
In those conditions a 3 1/2 goal lead would have been more than enough.
Everyone talks about individual moments - Raph' holding the Ball ( fisher's fault should have sheppard rather than run on ), the toe poke, Hawkins poster then Ablett's goal from the middle. All irrelevant if we kick goals form 20 out of closer!
The ultimate one which got away.
The best side in the H&A by a big margin and to lead 9.11 to 9.4 at 3/4 time with the easy missed shots was the problem. If those seven scoring shots were a conservative 3.4 instead of 0.7, it's a different story at the end of the game.
Geelong did it the year before against Hawthorn where they had 34 scoring shots to 25. Missed opportunities.
They turned it around the following year, as did we but it wasn't quite enough for us.
Sense
We fluffed it - pure and simple
Kick those goals we win comfortably
9.11 to 9.4 in a tight GF on a wet and wintry day is all you need to know
I think halftime we’d gone inside 50 18 more times ??
We had all the play
Didn’t execute
Forget “miracle moves” late in the game FFS or “Luke Bsll would’ve saved us”
Utter BS
We left the door ajar and Cats kicked it open
Had we win 2010 - we’d have pinched it as we were not the best side that year
09 was the one
Lyon was the coach
Haven’t seen a Saints side since dominate like we did - EVERY week there was effort ….none of this up and down Shyte..

I know we lost it in the first half, etc, etc, but all hope really went out the window with that jumper tug on Schneiderman.
I still maintain we would have won it had that free been paid.

I think swapping Dawson for Hudgeton is the sliding doors moment.barwon saint wrote: ↑Mon 04 Jul 2022 7:03pm Just looking through my book of footy cards and cant believe we lost that game.

Re: 2009 GF
I always thought this part of the debate was silly
Milne, Schneider and McQualter miss sodas from 20m
Raph gets run down because Fisher wouldn’t shepherd or talk
A whole bunch of other stuff ups too
But Dawson is the villain because he attacked the contest and toe poked the ball towards a free player and it didn’t come off!!!
I always thought this frame of thinking was just personalised, irrational spite

Re: 2009 GF
Spot on, but don’t let the truth get in the way.
You’d think that Lyon had ignored Max at his peak through some sort of bias or favoritism toward Dawson.
If Max had anything left he would have gone around another year, but he did not.
Max was pissed off missing out at the time but later conceded he was cooked at the end of 2009.
Lyon f#cked up with Ball in the last 1/4, and he should have played young talent who could get the ball instead of Eddy, but not playing Max was the right call.
There's only one rule in the jungle! When the LYON's hungry, he eats!

Re: 2009 GF
Max still had a few good games left. Dawson was suffering a form slump, low confidence and he was underdone.
I don’t begrudge him for the spoil. It was instinct and he had to take the risk. Scarlett got lucky.

You’re being melodramatic. There is no spite, it’s that Zac was underdone going into that game, simple.skeptic wrote: ↑Fri 08 Jul 2022 9:21pm I always thought this part of the debate was silly

We keep pining about the Hawkins point. But it was Zac who marked and then gifted Hawkins the ball to make that play.
Like I said, he was underdone.

I remember at the time wanting them to bring Max in, thought he would rise to the occasion and do a great job.
Zac had an awesome start to the season but was found out by about half way thru IMO if I remember correctly, he benefit from being in a great team.
Do you think other clubs still carry on about games that happened over a decade ago?

Re: 2009 GF
Why do you think GT insisted we take Ball instead of Judd
He has said specifically
John Beveridge was in charge of recruiting and because he knew the kids, he left that up to him
Phantom Draft in 2001
1-L.Ball
2-C.Judd
3-G.Polak
4-A.Sampi
5-L.Hodge
Ball was rated every bit as high as Judd as a junior.
