Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
This has been Dougall's biggest issue in my opinion.
I have never seen a Full Back punch the ball back into the field of play as much as he does.
The amount of times he punches the ball into the goal square instead of killing the ball is amazing.

No. I see him staying, he just needs to concentrate on doing the right things more.

it may or may not be relevant or even interesting to some, but this how the Port fans reacted late 2019, when Doogs came over...

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
Not only do we need Dougal but we also need either Harris Andrews or Ben McKay as well. In today’s footy you need 2 tall backs that are 198+cm
St Kilda should never trade with Essendon and Sydney ever again!!!

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
If the knee has been bothering Dougal for a while it could explain most recent form.
He'll come back better than ever with a fully functioning knee. Remember that goal he kicked in Adelaide; turned sprinted like a Stawell Gifter, threaded it. Happy Days.

It's been a long time since I been to Moorabbin I still remember blokes pissing in long necks & bloke pissing in the hand basins at half time but I don't remember that many feral fans, I thought that was Collingwood's domain . Been to Vic park a few times & they make the Heathens look like choir boys IMO any way I might be biased

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
What about Leinert he has played that role at port and would be a good fit he also can play.SydneySainter wrote: ↑Sun 03 Jul 2022 12:06pm Dougal’s recent form has been far from inspiring, so at least this will be an opportunity to see our other tall stocks in action.
Not convinced about Joyce and the only other tall backs we have are Adams who is a 18 year old kid and injured and Allison who I don't think will ever make it hope I am wrong but has been on list a long time.
So cupboard is pretty bare in big defenders we knew this might happen with Dougal injury didn't do much about it at the time when we could have got someone on the list at either the rookie preseason or mid season draft still had 1 sport available at midseason which we didn't use.

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
Lots of comments on this thread from posters who dont seem to understand the role of the pure defenders in the backline.
Howard has being playing a key role in one of the best backlines in the competition. Perhaps he doesn't take lots of impressive-looking intercept marks, but they are not the bread and butter of defending IMO. Howard, like another underrated Saints defender in Webster, is good at scrambling the one percenters which break down the most dangerous opposition attacks. These don't always come off, and can often look ungainly, but, over the course of a game, they make a crucial impact on the scoreboard.
I fear that the absence of Howard will be critical to our losing one or more of the games he misses. Joyce or Battle or whoever we put at fullback will do their best, but the idea that they can fill the gap is laughable IMO.
Having said that, I would strongly favour Joyce coming in for Howard as a like for like. Lienert is certainly tall enough, but doesn't seem to me to have the overhead strength, although it's hard to be certain of this until we see him actually playing in the role. I would see Leinert as a contender to replace Clark: his long, accurate kicking would give us another attacking angle off the half-back line. But, ideally, I would prefer to see Clark's spot used to expand the midfield contingent by bringing in Owens. But, if Owens is still unfit, Lienert might be worth giving a crack.
I realise this doesn't leave a spot for Highmore, which I know won't please many fans. But, as we saw on Friday night, it seems to be more or less imperative to play Highmore at CHB. And that will mean pushing Battle into another position in which he is less suited.

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
Not really sure the love for Joyce on here when we have Lienert who is a much better footballer. We are going to struggle with height either way but Lienert provides more in all aspects and looks a calmer head with ball in his hands. I specifically remember a Port Adelaide semi final vs Geelong where he clamped up Tom Hawkins.

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
Who has kicked bags of goals against him??
Howard is a very good player
200cm key defenders are like gold.
So much hate for a guy who keeps his opponents down to minimal goals

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
I am not so sure about that. We have a very good back half and Dougal is one of the mainstays.

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
Dougal needs a tall CHB to play with him. He is often playing between two positions, using his speed to cover both.
Hence the frustration from several on here.
He is definitely a keeper.

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
Battle has been playing CHB beautifully and would be top 10 in the B&F
Wilkie would only be behind Sinclair
Those two and Webster have carried the backline
Hill has been inconsistent with his best being elite and worst poor
Howard and Paton have been ordinary at best

Battle has been marginal...tho I like it
Wilkie ..yeah, OK...fair enough
Webster ....mnn..pass
Hill....one bad game, tagged and crushed
Howard....the elite puncher, but still a Rolls Royce...keeper
Paton..patchy
Lienert and HIghmore would have been great..
ya know, Freo fans say our defence is weak..
they really respect Ryder/Marshal ruck combo - they seriously respect it - and they think we have runners in Hill and Sinclair, and they rate King and Higgo., but they think are wek point is defence!! Can you believe it?

Re: Hunter and Dougal to miss weeks
I think you’ll find Webster, Wilkie and Battle would be top 10 in the B&F atm
Obviously Sinclair would be streets ahead
From the midfield group
In order
Crouch, Ross, Steele and Gresham
Forwards
Membrey and maybe King or Marshall
My B&F order would be
Sinclair, Wilkie, Crouch, Ross, Steele, Battle, Gresham, Membrey, Webster, Marshall
After that
King, Hill, McKenzie, Higgins, Howard, Ryder, Butler, Wood, Long, Paton
At a guess
