Does your typical saints supporter suffer from PTSD
"PTSD is a series of responses which occur after experiencing a traumatic event.
Symptoms, which include intrusive memories, avoidance behaviours around reminders of the event, negative thoughts and moods, as well distress signs including heightened anxiety and inability to sleep, must be present for more than a month to lead to a diagnosis, Dr Ray said."

Re: Does your typical saints supporter suffer from PTSD
Yes!!...PTSD is diagnosed if symptoms are present for more than one month. What is the diagnosis, I wonder, for a symptom that has been raging for over forty years?

Fair play…
And not to trivialize …but I do…self depreciate .sarcasm…tell tale…
But as a kid and young teen, more than once asked myself….yes, typical, bloody typical of me to me a Saints fan!,
I could laugh about being a Saints fan only in my early 20s..and it was cool to be bad..
I’ll move on…but fair point.

One big problem with St. Kilda supporters is we are too accepting of mediocrity, plus we make too many excuses for our club and players...enough is enough I say!!

Absolutely...I wont be attending or watching any more games (live) this year. Plus after Friday nights debacle, I am questioning whether to continue with our rolling memberships. If Ratten has his contract extended mid season I definitely wont be renewing our memberships next year - it says our hasnt learnt a thing from past experiences. I can understand they want stability and may think Ratten is the right man for the job but to renew his contract mid season after Fridays mess is accepting mediocrity IMO.

Traumatic events...
Sexual assault
Physical violence
Sudden death of a family member in an extreme way
Max King missing set shot from 30m out directly in front
Surviving a house fire or flood where you almost died
Emotional abuse from a partner, threats, harassment
Yeah all of those things go together

But it doesn’t have to be event related
It can just come from being derided, marginalized, bullied at school, blamed by our parents for being an arsehole that is spoiling it …
That can give you a pretty grim sense of yourself …and more frighteningly, it can stop you from growing and maturing and reaching your potential.
You get frozen in a childish mindset where you had a sense of some safety..the world passes you by.
I am not at all trivializing those tragic events on your list, especially Max King missing, but o am just saying, you can slowly poison the soil so that the garden never grows.

Obviously no sane, rationale person would actually compare post traumatic stress disorder which is slightly more diagnostically complex than the quote in the op suggests… is in the same vein as losing a game of football or spectacularly bombing out as we tend to do.
It’s ok to have our bell rung and be flat or sad after a big loss. Of course it is. Heck I still can’t bring myself to watch a lost grand final
The linkage however made me chuckle. The scale is like having a minor cold to passing away from Covid on a ventilator

I feel your pain mate…sad part is they give you hope and optimism then s*** in your face!
Been happening for nearly 150 years, of which about 80% has been steeped in mediocrity.

Re: Does your typical saints supporter suffer from PTSD
Ffs people can be traumatised in many ways and at different levels and degrees ..and just because some of you have been traumatised by life doesn't mean you own it or have a right to poo poo someone who says they are traumatised by the saints ...stop being woke jokes . I know people who are traumatised because progressive leftists laugh and joke about killing unborn babies .

Yes. I still have ‘Nam-style flashbacks over the 1997, 2009 and 2010 GFs!

Yeah, even though I wasn’t even born in ‘71, I have found watching a replay of that particular GF to be fairly traumatic.saynta wrote: ↑Mon 20 Jun 2022 5:26pm1965 AND 1971 still haunt meas well.Sainternist wrote: ↑Mon 20 Jun 2022 5:13pm Yes. Re: Does your typical saints supporter suffer from PTSD
Had a think about the principle that might be behind this thread.
I don't get fussed so much about losing per se, bit blue but it has been our lot so often there is plenty of scar tissue.
Its the eye watering avoidable foolishness at times - and some terrible twists of fate.
On a micro level a few exasperations from Friday night:
- early, Gresh has the ball, several options in front, decides he doesn't like any, circles himself in virtually same spot, of course gets shut down at speed kicks a hopelessly optimistic length wise ball across goal: Essendon thank him for the goal. Why Gresh, so not percentage footy.
- Butler has ball in the clear, several options ahead, runs too close to oncoming Don player has to dink over to try to get a teammate, who had to slow because he had given a dishonoured lead and a Dan neatly pops it to a Don defender scrambling to make ground & desperately looking for form . Should have been a goal.
- Butler has ball about 30 out, time to either shoot or handball over the top to clear player, does neither gets closed down, stumbles, loses the pill. Another goal given up.
- Sinclair unnecessarily across goal trying to just miss 2m Peter - guess what - another Don's goal.
- Clark running clear from the centre has Max on lead ( or could go for goal) kicks 20 m ahead of Max into a dead pocket.
- NWM has mid distance pass option to open player, no, long hero kick to Essendon defender.
- Jones fumbles regulation hb 30 out from goal straight in front and gives ball to Don's, we are all out of position because Jones fumble seemed unlikely.
Giansiracusa breaking Kosi's skull in a mongrel act.
Crowd running on when G-Train got #100.
Clark being ruined by MacKay.
Spiders collarbone against Bears.
GT and Butterrs ginormous egos.
Alan Richardson's wet towel attempt at coaching that seemed like it might never end
Someone hired Elshaugh as recruiting manager.
Alves freezing in last quarter 1997.
Lyon being outcoached in GF by being bloody minded and not developing young stars.
it goes on of course - but that macro and micro stuff that should be so easily avoidable just makes me so cross and disappointed. And we seem to cop more than our share.
