Ben Long's game tonight
Thought his game deserved a special mention.
Didn't get a heap of it but his pressure was high and when the heat was on in the 2nd & 3rd Long's poise stood out, was quick and evasive when he had the ball and used it well.
We know he brings endevour and hardness but I thought he played a great team game tonight from limited disposals.

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
& if tonight's game can be his norm then a poor game won't see him dropped. He was very good, picked up where Higgins left, adding superb pressure.

Has a crack, which can’t always be said about some of his more fancied teammates.

Problem with Long is that next week he could punch someone in the head and get rubbed out for 4 weeks

Agreed, I thought he made some really good choices tonight under a lot of pressure. I really hope he takes it further, love his energy.

Welcome….we have Nostradamus joining the thread…
Let’s not play King, because he could launch for a mark and injure himself for 4 weeks

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
Long slotted in very well for Higgins, great desperation.
I'd like to give a shout out to Wood, who had a great game on the wing. Big asset with his height and kicked a great goal at a crucial moment

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
Long was ok. Nothing flash
He wanted to fly off the handle, but you could see he controlled his emotions today
There’s no doubt that opposition sides hear footsteps when he’s around. He is a good ball user and he just needs a bit of continuity
Just needs to be a contributor and be a bit cleaner with ball in hand

He should replace Bradley Squib Hill. I've had enough of Hill. Banish him to the Magoos, does not deserve a spot in the Seniors.

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
Must admit i think there is a spot for him in our side has opponents looking over their shoulder with his attack on the ball and player.
I thought he played well tonight when he came on would like for him to string a few games together to show what he can bring to the side

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
IMO Ben was very good today hard at it ,deft touches that resulted in goals for us & kicked a couple himself. Can't ask much more than that from a small forward coming on as the injury sub IMO

That's what I like about him. X factor. And to be honest sometimes when he loses his temper I am glad that he does. He sticks up for his teammates.
He is an impact player. Great to have him back in the side.

He doesn’t let the opposition have it all on their terms. He’ll always be hard at it and we need a few players like him to compete against the top teams
I don’t think he’s going to lose his temper if his team is going as well as it was today

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
That is the Long we wanted to see, that we need to see.
Too often he spoils his game by being a loose cannon.
Tonight he was disciplined, while still be hard at it.
Also to his disposal tally one can add a number of deft taps to team mates. Long was a "thinker" tonight, and that bodes well for his career..

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
What I like about Long is that whether he has a good game or bad, hits the scoreboard or not... the effort is a not negotiable for him. He doesn’t get praised for getting to contests, chasing, or guarding space, blocking and laying the odd tackle. All of that stuff he does in droves each and every game.
He gets criticised when he fails to do more than that e.g. doesn’t get enough ball or is wayward with disposal etc
Kent is virtually unsighted most games he plays unless he actually manages to get away from his opponent and take an uncontested mark (assuming he catches the damn thing) and gets praised for it but you rarely see him and go: Am surprised Deans only had 6 touches... thought he had more.
Ben on the other hand is at play after play after play even if it doesn’t come off.
Am thrilled he got an opportunity (albeit at Higgins’ expense - he was looking good) and made the most of it.

I'll name the elephant in the room. HILL. He is on double the salary Long is on but gives half the effort
St Kilda should never trade with Essendon and Sydney ever again!!!

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
Early in the third quarter her indoors turned to me and asked "How does Long justify getting a game?" She doesn't like him and he does test my patience. "He tackles hard, puts his body on the line and usually finds our blokes with his kicks." Bugger me, he then gave the pressure valve another turn and all of the favourite whipping boys followed suit and turned the game. Long was the instigator by my reckoning.

Re: Ben Long's game tonight
Long got two holding the ball free kicks in the forward line that rarely rarely rarely happens... it happened because he absolutely cracks in and goes at 100. He needs to be in the team weekly. He was an absolute igniter in our forward line and his efforts lifted the team.
Higgins and Butler are our other smalls and they provide very little pressure, Long was bloody amazing
