Rating Ratten each week.

Post: # 1942719Post Gershwin »

This is not a thread to 'whip' Brett Ratten but one to objectively record his performance through the season.

I'm thinking that a win immediately ensures him at least 6/10 and a loss means 5/10 or lower.
Other factors are more subjective and include team selection, team determination and committment, tactical moves, skill level, standard of opponent, winning/losing margin etc.

Round 1 v Collingwood
3/10

2 players returning from a year long injury lay off
2 debutants in addition to Byrnes who is young
Kent

Didn’t like the balance from the get go… felt we were lacking run and grunt

Needs to play Sinclair in the middle. He’s too good to play off a flank. He’s the quality mid that needs to step up. Flank is for guys like Long or Billings that don’t have the size/tank/skills to be a full time mid

Battle at CHB looks like an early disaster… feedback on Linarte (or however it’s spelled has felt more positive).

IMO game lost almost entirely in the coaches box. Needs to find a way to fire these guys up and get them to take on the game.

1/10 for me and that comes from having the guts to play Hayes which I didn’t think would work

Really disappointing from Ratten. If we continue to dish up performances like than than he will be gone by round 15. That being said our list is pretty trash and we lack a couple of star players through the middle.

I watched the press conference and I think he identified the two areas that let us down: some poor skill errors when not under pressure, and being beaten in centre clearances 18 to 9. Not sure he could have done much about either of these.

Also, while I think that we were generally outplayed on the night, we did hit the front (briefly) in the last quarter so we were certainly in the game.

Anyway, that's my 2c!

I swear our mids have no idea how to read the ball off a ruckman's taps, and if I look at last night's game and some last season, our mids all hang around together and don't spread. it's a coaching thing

I apologise because I won’t discuss this comment further- David Rath has far too much influence

Opposition 1/5 - expected to beat & finish on top of
Selection 1/5 - one point for Hayes, Owens & Kent were baffling
Structure 1/5 - a no name opposition forward line & the make up of our back 6 seemed out of whack. Battle must improve, Howard must improve, Wilkie must trust his abilities, Hill must play as a defensive winger & leave the flanks to Sinclair & Webster. Owens (if played) should have played forward, was all at sea in guts in game one.
Game Style - 0/5 Players have tempo confused with lack of run, take a breather someone else will run = selfish.

Total: 1/5 (rounded up to 1)

Apology heard Tony.
Is that I wonder the driver of the focus on stats coming out of every orifice instead of focusing on changing the stop, prop, bomb it long strategy.

Interesting as I thought his role was just as an 'analyst? Ratten needs to be a lot stonger then to ensure the boundaries aren't crossed.

If Rath has anything to do with our stoppage set ups he needs to be removed immediately. Our players were so reactive last night, they were constantly second to the ball the over committed to fall of the ball.

Collingwood then used quick hands to slice us up and we chased tail all night. It was similiar to the Carlton game. Some elite support for Steele through the midfield would help big time.

It was interesting when Hayes rucked last night our mids appeared to do better than when Marshall was. I think Mashall got worn down by Grundy/Cox during the game and as a result Grundy had a big last 1/4.

Back to the thread topic:

Ratts 5/10
Lack of intensity for 60% of the game.
No midfield stoppage answers. Same old.
Selection failures.
Defence 5/10
Howard/Battle were poor and had little intercept affect.
Hill is still not a HBF.
Forward 5/10
Small forwards had no impact.
King looked like he didn't have head in the game.
Midfield 3/10
Stoppage & centre clearance dominance continued.
Ruckman did ok but no cohesion with mids.

Does not get his charges fired up to play footy.
All the strategy on the world won't help if you're second to the ball or don't stick tackles.

I think i will refer to Ratts as Brett Rathen from now on, after Tony's comment.

My big knock on the bloke, as (like most here) I'm no tactical genius.

You seldom saw a spiritless performance under Ro$$.

Does Ratts have the necessary level of authorty? The charisma? Can he intimidate anyone?

We were f****** terrible and Kent is the worst person to walk the earth since Jack the Ripper, according to this forum, but we would have still won if King and Higgins could kick straight.

Ah, the if defence. Well there you go. There is the actual ladder and the if adjusted ladder.

Now if a mid was dragged by Coach Ratten after the first gratuitous centre free, who knows.

Let me guess. He starts off with:

“G’day Saints fans. Jeez, that was a really disappointing night”.

Why bother trying to rate him? A waste of time.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Whose fault is that?
Has the instruction come from Lethlean?
Is Rath higher in the food chain than Ratts?
I thought Merrick was the mentor.

How can Ratts have different men pulling his strings?

Rath spent years at Hawks with Clarko, in their golden years.

I just had a worrying thought.
Roughy to the Saints.
Now Rath.
Is this a cunning plan (Baldrick) to parachute Clarko into RSEA Park, and get the band back together? Like The Eagles? (Don Henley, Glen Frey, Joe Walsh).

Think back to when Finnis et al brought Ratts in to assist Richo.
'We believe Richo is the one to take this club forward, and we want to surround him with all the support he needs'.

The only cunning plan visible at the moment has us on the road to nowhere.

Bit disturbing to me that a two-time senior coach in his fifties needs a mentor, anyway.

I keep thinking about Richo being 'surrounded with all the support we can give him', and the losses we had, not just losing, but the way we lost, hastening the succession plan.
I imagine the fateful meeting, Richo being told that 'you were given all the assistance we thought you needed to get results, and yet no real improvement, we think this task is beyond your capabilities'.

They've gotten Roughy, arguably a guy fresh out of the game who apparently has great IP (can he teach though?)
Next phase- get Gubby Allen, proven performer
Next phase- Rath, someone who should have the skillset and knowledge to really fast-track improvement.

We keep playing rubbish style, at the bye we have maybe 2-3 wins, Ratts gets called in to Bassatt's office...
'You were given all the assistance...(refer 2 paragraphs earlier)'

3 days before next round after bye-
Press conference.
Finnis, Lethers, Ratts, Clarko
