Heath: once he puts on 10kg and gets more run in his legs he'll be a handy support for Marshall. Looked competent enough for his first hit out

Very enjoyable late afternoon in the sun. Moorabbin is a picture. Love the look of the new stand.

Impressed with our recruits, but not sure about Campbell. Pleased to see Long, Sinclair and Webster do well.

Owen nearly took the mark of the day. He's going to be a beauty.

That balding former Port player is a beautiful kick . He along with the other two train on players would give us a deep list if all three were to be drafted.

Fast open bruise free low scoring match with no packs but both defences on top for most of the game.

Love Heath.

Lots of good signs there with the list. The young guys look very promising, though Heath and Wanganeen Milera look a season or so off at this stage, and just need to build the tank up.

Took a bunch of notes quarter by quarter, although I had my 4 year old daughter with me, so I may have missed a bit.

Match was 23 min quarters, White (Defenders) vs Black (Forwards), most mids swapped teams at halftime.

No Billings, Hannebery, Ryder, Geary, Connolly & obviously Coffield.

Q1
McKenzie, Webster, Bytel strong.
Crouch good but wasted the ball.
Sinclair crisp as usual.
Hayes took two nice grabs, as did King.
#1 kicked a nice goal, not sure if he was a fill in?
Sloppy skills early, but that’s to be expected.
Poor finishing in front of goal.

Q2
Gresham, Membrey & Sinclair dominating.
Marshall destroying Campbell.
Owens looks impressive.
Heath has a presence. Furious with himself when missing a 50-50 spoil.
Allison was doing the kicking out but turned over a few.
Jones & Crouch far superior to anyone else below the knees.
Clark getting the footy but butchering it.
Byrnes good under pressure.
Kent wasteful. Doesn’t watch the ball on to his boot.
Last five minutes of the quarter were woeful, fatigue kicking in.
Black lead by 9 pts.

Q3
Long more effective than Butler or Higgins across half forward.
Sharman good in the air.
48 in everything, don’t know who he is?
White team dominating but delivery inside 50 is garbage. Can’t seem to kick to advantage.
Lots of blind kicks forward and safe bombs down the line.
Really liking what Owens is showing.
Sinclair & Steele all class.
White team kicked 4 goals to 1.

Q4
Gresham finished for the arvo. Seems fine though.
Wilkie reads the play so well.
Joyce strong in the air and tackling.
Windhager & Owens in the middle and they don’t look out of place.
King crowded too easily, no effort to block for him or give him space.
Heath took a nice contested grab, running out the game well.
Owens getting better.
Higgins good final quarter.

Final score
Black 8.5.53
White 8.9.57

All up, Sinclair, McKenzie, Steele, Jones, Webster, Wilkie, Membrey, Long, Byrnes & Owens best.

Bytel good but faded, Windhager good late. Paton looked ready to go.

Not sure about the game plan? Seemed high risk high reward early, then switched to slow, safe ball movement. Too often the ball went to the disadvantage of the receiver and often went over the top going inside 50. I can’t say a single passage of play left me excited, but it’s only mid February.

Hayes played half forward and occasionally helped out in the ruck. Too small for ruck. Although 194cm he doesn't look tall. Can take a mark, though. He's well built without being overly big. Think a build similar to Nick Dal Santo but taller.

Take aways from me, noting I didn't watch 100% of the game.

No notable changes to gameplan. Noticed quite a few bombs into 50 and getting stuck with no movement out of half back.

Two teams both filled with some talent, the selection table is going to be a tough place to be this year.

Sharman despite no reports he is training the house down is a solid walk up first 18 player
Jones being free of injury will be key to our success
Crouch wasn't playing with much urgency, hopefully he can turn it on when the real games start
Sinclair looks like he has stepped up another notch
Gresh and Pato look good coming off long term injuries - ready to play and make an impact
Higgins for all the "training the house down" commentary was disappointing
Webster was quiet
Long was very good, looked like he was playing with urgency
Leinert and Naish looked really good, but playing for their careers
NWM looked good when he got the ball, but didn't get much of it. Will have to be played into the game by his teammates, like Hill
Heath looks good and I've got him over Campbell at this stage
McKenzie will be hard to keep out of the team

Watched the live stream and I have to say our 2021 recruits will be really important for the future of our footy club.

Sharman, Heath, NWM, Owens, Windhager, Adams, Peris, Kyle, Hayes and possibly 1 other.

Sharman just has exquisite timing for marks and kicking on goals, kicked 3 goals one off his left.
Heath will be our No.1 ruckman in a few years, he will go past Marshall.
Wanganeen-Milera has some developing to do, but his kicking skills will slice teams up. Slotted a nice goal from 40-45 out.
Owens will be an inside/out bull midfielder who will also be a threat in the air.
Windhager plays a bit like Steele, is super brave and has really quick creative hands and that burst of speed in close.
Adams did enough to suggest he will make a ripping key defender, taking 2 really good contested marks.
Peris is small but wasnt overwhelmed by the bigger bodies and moves extremely well, reminds me of a young Scully.
Kyle didnt play but we have seen enough snippets to suggest he has the potential.
Hayes (when signed) is an absolute bull, splits packs, is a good overhead mark and very versatile.

Naish & Lienert both kicked nices goals and showed pieces of good play throughout. Another to impress was Sandringhams Lindsay Baynes he wouldnt look out of place on an AFL list. Leinert is a very quick and a terrific kick, Naish was creative around the goals and Baynes was everywhere.

If not for Covid and no under 18/19 National Comp etc Windhager & Owens would have both been 1st round draft picks. Their ball winning, skills and composure are beyond their years, both are rippers.

Jones was BOG by a considerable margin - just hope he can stay on the park our midfield looks dangerous with him playing.
Sinclair gave plenty of link up run from behind and was usual composed self.
Sharman was taking marks everywhere today and kicked 3 beautiful goals.
Wilkie his usual reliable self, just never does anything wrong.
Gresham only played the 1st half but was very good and kicked a nice goal.
Byrnes, Bytel and Hill busy and impacted at different times.
Kent had plenty of the footy but kicked 1 goal 4 behinds and a couple he should have give off.
Long played forward and kicked 2 nice goals, seemed busy.
Howard had the better of King. King kicked 1 goal a nice kick from a pocket.
Crouch quiet first half then improved.
Steele quiet by his standards.
McKenzie,Webster & Butler were solid.
Marshall needed the run, took a nice contested mark in the last.
Campbell held his own in the ruck against Marshall, is a solid back up option.
Paton another who needed the run and had his minutes managed.
Membrey played his usual game and looked good when moved into defence, likewise Wood.
I thought Highmore looked more comfortable and did better at CHB than Battle
Joyce played with some confidence and held his own in marking contests.
Adams didnt get a lot of it but took 2 beautiful marks, in 1st and last quarters. Is a lot bigger than I expected has a perfect frame to build on.
Heath attacks the ball in the air without fear, needs strength and tank for 2nd efforts.
Hunter Clark was quiet has some work do if he wants to play midfield, Owens & Windhager did more.
Ross I saw him have 2 touches and 1 of those he was running out or the centre well clear then scrubbed a turnover kick into the F50. Shocker!!!
Higgins had a shocker couldnt get near it.
Allison is no where near it. He simply doesnt know how to win the footy (no inate ability).

Geary, Billings, Ryder, Conolly, Hannebery & Kyle DNP.

As far a game style there was no changes apart from the defenders all took turns kicking out from defence (rather than just Howard). But the majority of the kicks were just long down the line to a contest. You would hope the coaches are working on something more creative than that. Also no obvious changes on delivery into the F50, we go to the pockets far far too often. Almost every snapped goal was missed.

One thing that did standout from previous years preseason games, is we definitely have more of a hard edge - so obviously all the contested work they have done is paying dividends. Heres hoping we can spring board into the 2022 with plenty of wins and launch a real assault at the finals later in the year.

interesting to note
no one has mentioned King

thought he would clunk more marks - but on the flip side thought he competed hard for his spills

Interesting reading the AFL summary when they speak about Ryder & Geary, stating it will be another month before they may be in full training, making round 1 doubtful.

If true, I do see a round 1 debut for Hayes to support Marshall.

The bits I watched on the live stream didn't fill me with confidence I have to say. Mostly to do with disposal. Lots of kicks into F50 going over heads, too many bombs and hit and hopes. Some of the younger fellas are exciting and am still optimistic about the season ahead. Our disposal though did not seem to have improved and that forward entry plan of going wide to the flanks and pockets....hmmmmmm. Game plan looks the same. Caveat is I only watched less than a half.

Don’t worry, it’s a common problem this time of year.

Cold balls and hot air.

The balls are stored in cooler air and then the summer field temperature rises up and the air gets way less dense.

If you’d stayed for the second half it might have been better.

Cold balls, hot air.
