Who will we take?

Stick a name down.

I think we will take Wanganeen

I'm hoping Wanganeen /Milera but I too have no idea . I really don't know a lot the about the candidates or what the club is thinking. Hopefully the club has done it's home work & picks wisely

If we are true to form some unknown that the other clubs rated as a late rookie chance

I’m in 2 minds about Wanganeen-Milera

He’s consistently been touted as the most skilled mid in the draft and he really looks the goods. On one hand I’d love to draft

But there’s something a little too Raph Clark like in his approach to disposal. He stops, props and carefully threads the eye of the need picking the best target.

I’ve always maintained that the issue with Clark was that he struggled with the pace of the game and played better when he didn’t have time to think but just played on instinct/not in his head.

I worry about that quality in WM. He’s just so calculating which is great…
But I wonder if he’ll have similar struggles

I'm not sure mate looks good from what I've seen via the internet. Definitely & outside type & I think his awareness looks better than Raph's but as I said I really don't know a lot about him.

Whoever we pick, I'm certain there'll be a thread on here in 5 years about how we missed out on a champion who was taken later in the draft.

I'm hoping it's not Sinn, don't like the idea of gambling on a HBF turning to a mid.

I quite like Goater but reading a bit more his kicking is a bit suss and has played more in the backline than mid.
still though, had some mid time and looks good for a tall mid/wing.
quick, agile, very good by hand, good in the air
kicking is a concern though, we have plenty of guys that can't kick well enough.

others that might be available at our pick that all sound pretty good Draper, Johnson, Nasiah W-M, Mac Andrew.
Nasiah or Johnson would be a good fit for our needs (outside class) but a bit worried about Nasiah's ability to win his own contests/handle a tag.
Draper is interesting, sounds like he has a good mix of inside and outside ability.
Mac Andrew, not sure about, will he get strong enough for ruck or KP duties?

Knightmare on bigfooty isn't glowing on Sonsie, due to inconsistent performances. also seems a bit injury prone.

knightmare links, always worth a read

Raph's problem was rarely the execution - he was just a slow decision maker who didn't have great awareness

Raph's issue was our game plan was so ball movement which went against the way he played. He would take off only to have nothing in front of him. In saying that Raph was incredible overhead.

Josh Gibcus - if he is still there
The first 2 academy boys are midfielders
So a key position young defender would cover other areas of need & provide a balanced approach to the draft
6 ft 4 & still growing. A ready made defender (apparently) would take pressure off a few other mid sized defenders in Wilkie & Highmore
It would be great to shore up a key defensive post for the next 10 years.
We have tried a few times without success - it has been a while since we have had a young key back of note (with respect to Dougal of course)

100% agree and well summed up.
The point that I’d add however is that regardless… Raph wasn’t able to adapt which is what better players tend to do.
FWIW… big Raph Clark fan here. Very under appreciated IMO but should have gotten better

Now I’m not suggesting that NWM will have the same problem… it’s just a red flag that triggered for me.

I have had an each way on nearly every kid in the draft. I suggested Sinn in my Phantom, but there is now some talk that Ward might get through to us. TBH I will back our current recruitment team in to nail it, whoever it is!

There are really positive vibes coming out of the club heading into the 2022 season.

Cal Thomey has us taking Wanganeen. If we take him letting Hobbs on the board I will spew.

Todays HS phantom has us taking Matt Johnson, so it's anyones guess. Twomey didn't do too well last year, with Covid he doesnt get the exposure with the recruiters or players he has in past years.

Fox Sports phantom draft this morning has Gibcus as our potential pick. Wouldn't be unhappy with that. We need a key defender.
No Owens or Windhager in the top 20.
If we can come away with one of Gibcus / Sinn / Ward / Johnson plus Owens and Windhager that would be good haul. Especially off the back of having serially traded away our second rounders in the past years.
I'd like to see our defensive stocks replenished so would be happy with Gibcus.
Fact is though, I have NFI which one would be best for us. Whoever we choose let's hope he's awesome.
