Surprised Ladhams went so cheap - a swap of 1st rounders and 3rd rounder to Port - so around pick 40 I am guessing

Would not be surprised if our first rounder, Owens and Windhagen play seniors next year. Why trade in GOPS. We have been the most active club with trading over last two years. I have no issue with us going to draft and getting internal improvement via kids.

Don't be surprised if we miss out on Windhager. I think there are a couple of clubs sniffing around. It would be typical of our luck to finally get a bonus selection and have an AFL rule change deny us that player when most other clubs have already benefitted handsomely from the previous arrangements. Re: No trades
Im pleased the club didnt pay overs, but hope they have another backup ruckman in mind. Hunter spent a number of years at Adelaide and in his late 20's is not going to improve on what we saw this year. Surely there is a better option playing state league or even local football some where in the country?

Tight cap, and we didn't overpay for once
Of all the players that actually moved clubs, probably only 3 would have improved our list ...Cerra, Ladhams and Dawson.
We didn't miss any real A graders.
Consolidated NGA points - with fingers crossed.
We keep all picks in play next year.
Only lost Dunstan.
All focus on Bing for 2022, and 3 -4 talented kids in November.
Maybe we pick up a DFA for KPD ?

Re: No trades
Out so far:
Roberton
Carlisle
Frawley
McKernan
Dunstan
Clavarino (r)
Alabakis (r)
We'd be hoping to bring in:
Pick 11
Owens
Windhager
That's 3 of 5 senior list spots filled. I'd like to see us sign a readymade key defender and a ruck - Talia or Hartley and Archie Smith would be my preference. Then let's delist Lonie, Kent and Hunter to open up spots for late draft picks or any FAs who impress over a pre season trial.

Re: No trades
No trades? We traded picks.
Strategy was to:
1/ keep our first pick and to be in position to take both our NGA's as long as they do not get called in the top 20 (This WILL improve our list, even if in 2022 it does not improve our best 22 ).
2/ not do anything that would impair our ability to trade in Ben King in 2022.
.....
and then as a much lower priority to tray and gain a serviceable ruck as long as it did not impair 1/ and 2/.
With no second round this draft and also with no tradeable players our hand was very limited this trade period. See 1/ and 2/ again.
The club would have been hoping to get some FA compensation, but good enough offers were not forthcoming.
Some players would have been shopped around. Long clearly and possibly Battle. But again no takers with any reasonable offers.
So there is little point gnashing one's teeth about the lack of players traded in, as we simply did not have the picks or tradeable players to do so.
We may well still pick up a developed or experienced player or two as a DFA or in PSD.
In terms of improving our list from the mid-season draft on we have changed tack somewhat. We have sought more younger players (Even Xerri was not old):
- Picked up Max and Sharman, and both look good prospects
-And will hopefully get pick 11 and out two NGA's.
That gives in 6 months a good injection of young talent. Next year hopefully we add to that with Ben King.

Re: No trades
Fremantle, Carlton, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane, GWS, Gold Coast, Richmond, Sydney, Port Adelaide and West Coast had required players wanting out.
St Kilda did not.
We lost nothing in a trade period where very few gained anything.
We will add a first round draftee to Highmore, Sharman and Heath.
We removed several list cloggers.
And we have our eyes firmly fixed on the big picture.

There is a policy at AFL HQ that goes.
- If there is a bad rule then that bad rule won't be changed until St Kilda suffers from the bad rule.
- If there is a rule that St Kilda will shortly benefit from, it must be changed immediately to prevent St Kilda receiving that benefit.

Re: No trades
I like it that we didn't trade in some nuff nuff simply to please guys like that f*** wit King. Our recruiting staff are better than that.
Whose to say that they don't have their eyes on a couple of guys in the minor leagues.
Oh, I am also glad that we kept Battle and Long. Both still have something to offer.
All in all more than satisfied.
We will improve in 2022 simply because we will have a fuller list to chose from.
Looks like Hunter is a keeper. For now anyway.

Re: No trades
It seems to me that the pertinent question is who should we have gotten that we didn’t?
The only talent out there IMO that was available and cheap was Narkle from Geelong. Didn’t attract any interest and would have come cheap.
Reckon he was worth a call

Ladhams would have been a good pick up ,reckon he will be a top player.
But whether it would be worth a slide in our first pick is debatable.
Apart from him, not much.
