Re: Trade Radio
Who would have thought Leo Connolly would perform so well in 2021? Barely on the radar in 2020.
I remember the first game Byrnes played. It was close the quietest debut I've seen from a Saints player. He got 5 touches ( that I didn't even notice) and looked completely out of his depth. One year later he looked a fine young player. Leigh Montagna didn't look AFL standard in his first two seasons but blossomed in his third. Seb Ross looked so far off the mark in his first season I though he'd never make it.
It's often hard to predict how things will play out. Some are brilliant at VFL level and never make the transition. Others are unremarkable, yet, when they step up to the top level they fit in.

Re: Trade Radio
Agreed he's got a long way to go but he has some attributes that are very attractive.
Great kick off both sides, an excellent turn of speed, and a bit of daring in the way he backs himself to take the game on.
Hopefully, he can keep working on the defensive side of his game and also get better at winning the contested ball.

Re: Trade Radio
Where is the speculation in calling him the 26th best 18 year old. What if they speculated what he might be like at 21?B.M wrote: ↑Thu 30 Sep 2021 1:39pm They do generally at VFL level though, show something.
I never expected Allison to even get a game of AFL
What I do expect is that against teams like Aspley and Southport he can get a kick and show something
He was picked as the 26th best 18yo in the country, surely he has the ability to display his talent at the lower level?!
Maybe next year?
Going on this year, he will not be offered a contract past his initial 2 years and at best a rookie contract (ala Clavarino this season)
https://afl.draftcentral.com.au/player/matthew-allison/
Remember, he was a small forward at 16 had a huge growth spurt and started to show some strength in his hands at 17, strengthening his 0tential alongside his natural running ability. Apparently, he is still growing and is putting on weight.
He played 8 games in 2021 averaging 10.4 disposals and 3 marks in a pretty crap Zebras side..

Interesting that the projection was likely to be a late pick or even rookie - and yet we went relatively early at 26. Suggest another club had eyes on him and we didn’t think he would be there for our next pick.
I’m curious to know, have there been players who weren’t big accumulators at junior level but went on to be big time players at senior level ?

Re: Trade Radio
Let's hope Mr Walsh and Mr Carroll can help Allison reach the potential the recruiters saw in him.
An uninterrupted VFL season would also help.

Re: Trade Radio
Matt Rendell on SEN talking about how he was the forward coach of Hamill GTrain Kosi and Roo....everyone of those blokes, even Kosi, is much smarter than Rendell. What were we thinking letting him mastermind our forward strategy?

Re: Trade Radio
When he was GT's right hand man, was touted as the coaching brains but readily admitted that all he was trying to do was copy Brisbane's game plan. No brains needed for plagiarism, nor success.
I'd love to hear Nathan Burke's take on those involved in the coaching circle. Burke, to me, was the only one who spoke like a coach.

Re: Trade Radio
Nothing wrong with copying a club that was close to winning 4 flags in a row, 2001 to 2004, they lost in 2004 to Port Power.

Re: Trade Radio
You never win by copying a Game Plan
By the time you get it right, the other team has already evolved and you’re back with the pack playing catch up
It’s what made Clarko so great
He was a trendsetter

Re: Trade Radio
Quite true, simply copying will not put you in front of an evolving plan.
You can copy an area you're deficient in if you're happy your other areas are ahead of others. Collingwood in 2010, their missing link was how to defend. Thanks to Ball & Max they were able to include a proven defensive structure. Prior to that their defence was like a spaghetti strainer, giving up easy goals.

Re: Trade Radio
The Saints made 2 preliminary finals supposedly copying Brisbane's game style, seems a bit more successful than some want to admit.

Another era where the spoils of that "success" are in other club's trophy cabinets. We didn't even get a replica.

Re: Trade Radio
Not GTs “gun” strategist ????
This is funny stuff
Rendell is a dinosaur and not a very bright one at that
Can’t believe people here thought he and his clown coaching boss at the time were brilliant...
