There were some who actually criticised the decision at the time!!!
And we’re roundly rubbished on here by apologists
Some!?!
The majority hated the decision at the time.
What was especially challenging was those that for many years insisted that McCartin was the better pick. Curly at least stands by his argument that injury crueller Paddy and I can respect that... but so many others swore black and blue that Paddy would have the better career and would be redrafted and stick it to the doubters.

And here we go again. FFS
Well,,it still causes me pain.
Yeah and if he got knocked out 5 times and couldn’t play you wouldn’t care
Who? Petracca?
Yes
Petracca was the clear number one pick. Any man and his dog knew that.
Except we didn't have a dog picking the players. We had a f****** fish!
What a Charlie Foxtrot

Even better for Melbourne was that after we failed to pick Petracca we let it be known far and wide that he didn't interview well, he was arrogant, etc.
What a lack of class.
So this would have been pointed out to Petracca and he made a conscious effort to change.
That was just a dishonest load of shyte put out to explain why they did not take the clear no 1 player in the draft.

What Paddy doing right now?
Injury troll love it.
You are full of sneer.
I'm not sure defending the indefensible is the smartest of moves, but your choice.
These are the facts:
1) Christian Petracca is the best player in the AFL. He is an unstoppable midfield bull.
2) I'm not going to say he singlehandedly won the Premiership for Melbourne, but he was the main reason for their victory.
3) Petracca proved, once and for all, that not selecting him as our number 1 draft pick was the worst recruiting decision an AFL club has ever made.
The worst.
Yeah but is carrying on like petulant sooks for the remainder of one's life a good look. It's just plain damn embarrassing how some fans carry on and sometimes I wonder if this is a kindergarten forum.
As posted in the McCartin thread - but edited for relevance:
I am afraid that I am in the minority here - however:
Petracca is a fantastic midfield beast - we have our own in Steele
If Petracca had come to us at the time and we had just washed our hands of him as an underperformer then he could very well have been traded or asked to move on.
Petracca on his own would not have us holding aloft a cup as I fear he would have hampered Steele and left him as a designated tagger.
I prefer Steele over Petracca (even just for his leadership)

While McCartin was a never able to show what he could do , and perhaps he could have been a Josh Kennedy type player the bottom line is like Judd, Ball Hodge - As good as Hodge was Judd was the best .
As good as McCartin may have been i cant believe in any world( especially how the game has evolved) he would be better than Petracca.
Pure and simple the Boyd deal Spooked the recruiters in their quest to replace Roo.

Absolutely no way he'd have been better than Petracca, but if he'd ended up a decent forward like Gunston it would hurt a lot less.
The fact we ended up with zilch from pick one is what really stings.

I honestly wonder what Trout must think when watches Patracca play. He is embarrassed? Does he actually realise what he’s done or does he tell himself that he didn’t have a crystal ball and that he made the right decision at the time?
Not even Daniel Andrew’s could spin enough bull s*** to explain it. Was a shocking decision at the time - now it’s an all time great stuff up.

I wondered that. Pretty hard to reference the art of bullsh!te spinning without referencing a politician. Would have thought whoever the incumbent is would be a fair mark.

Seems like an incredibly harsh response to what looks like a light hearted attempt at humour by a forumite that’s never caused drama here before
Have to move on
We have some strong pieces coming together in this side
IF we can out the Trout years behind us fast we can contend
Steele will need help he’s not Petracca but certainly Oliver level and A grade
