Firstly
I can assure you my feelings pre 2014 and post 2014 draft was Petracca and we made a mistake not selecting him. I was very forthright about that!
Secondly
If Petracca did end up a good key forward. This thread would still exist, because right now CP is arguably the best player in the game who was the best prospect in his U18 year! And we overlooked him!!!
I could cop it if he wasn’t the best prospect at the time and developed into the player he is (like Bontempelli) that happens all the time.
Number 1 picks have to have elite qualities!!!

Re: Petracca
But he's not as good as King. King will rip games apart like Tony Lockett once did. Just wait and see. We got the right guy.

If I had a pick at the time
I would take King
After year 1 where Rozee starred and King didn’t play - King
Now - King

Re: Petracca
Billings was the consensus pick at 3 at the time
With hindsight
Bont should have actually gone pick 1

Re: Petracca
2014 was the year that I spent the least amount of time reviewing the top prospects- the consensus all the way through was that Petracca was the clear number one.B.M wrote: ↑Sun 05 Sep 2021 3:34pm Barometer

The report at the time was that all but 2 clubs had him rated as the clear best
Never really seemed in doubt.
Once it emerged that we were taking Paddy... quite a few forumites were very vocal in their criticism. Don’t remember if that included you or not (respectfully... I don’t remember any of them specifically) but numerous people pointed out his size and lack of an elite quality.

Re: Petracca
I don’t recall media experts being split at all. I didn’t see any discussion about McCartin as a high draft pick until it emerged the Saints were going to select him. This was a huge stuff up and we have to own it.The Barometer wrote: ↑Sat 04 Sep 2021 11:54pmNo really. It is hindsight. Unless you can prove your adamant selections from 8 years ago was nothing but petracca? and also prove that it was the obvisous selection even though (supposed) media experts where split. Can you prove that 8 years ago that you knew that McCartin as the best KF in the draft would be a complete bust?B.M wrote: ↑Sat 04 Sep 2021 12:49pm Not really
This thread is the opposite IMO and the reason is that it was a contentious decision and that it wasn’t hindsight.
It was a risk selection- with the number 1 pick
And by risk, I don’t mean McCartin
I mean overlooking the obvious selection, that can always come back to haunt you!
In this case it has, very much so.
Even if McCartin didn’t get knocked out, and ended up a good key forward. Still would’ve been a mistake.
No s*** we can see now it is a mistake. BUt not s*** clubs make mistakes.
If McCartin didn't get knocked out and ended up a good key forward this thread would not exist.

Re: Petracca
I think that there were many articles on the draft. Don't remember where Paddy was rated but Petracca was always near the top.

Re: Petracca
Billings v Bont - That’s more hindsight. Dogs got lucky on that one.
Petracca v McCartin - Petracca was clearly the best player in the draft and every man and his dog knew. Trout and co. tried to outsmart the draft after being spooked by the Boyd deal. We stuffed that up big time!

I'm glad we have Max! But so far he's not better than Ben. Can he be? I hope so!
Statistically in most categories Max was better, unfortunately in the most important for big forward he wasn't...goals.
But, the end of the season revealed a glimpse of what may be and we could see Max surge beyond any of our expectations.
Career Games:
Ben - 53 Games
Max - 38 Games
At this stage - 15 games is a hell of a lot - and in his last 9 games - 23 goals at 2.33 per game
Max is one season behind Ben or almost 30% games
I don't think the stats in games played as a forward are helpful in this instance....
Max played 10 seasons as a full forward
Ben played 9 1/2 seasons as a fullback.
So in fact he was learning a new position for at least the first season ( he'd played 4 games in Suns reserves as a fullback as well).
Full forward is all Max has ever known so he should be leaps ahead of Ben....if we are looking at games played in a position.
But honestly, they're both close. So alike in most areas. Max had always been better at everything but just.
He is a great player and I'm excited!
I personally think Ben is behind Max still as he's emerging from Max's shadow and becoming his own man. He would not succeed at St Kilda to the level he will at another club.
I think Ben knows this and he will never wear our colours.

How on earth did they pass on this guy.
Imagine him getting the ball out of the centre to King!

Re: Petracca
Even Richo questioned the club's desire to recruit Paddy.
Petracca would be handy in a Saints jumper, anyone could have made such a big mistake, Trout was a fish out of water.

Re: Petracca
Not hindsight at all
He was doing this at U18 level in the TAC cup and at the champs.
He has always been a beast
Just needed to build a tank.
Not taking him is embarrassing
Instead of Oliver and Petracca it could be Steele and Petracca

Re: Petracca
Yes it was the worst recruiting decision in history, because it is not a case of "hindsight heroes".
Everyone was saying it at the time, and anyone could see it.
Petracca monstered the TAC cup *as an underager* as a forward, then mostered it as a midfielder in his draft year.
He was the most obvious no. 1 pick of the century, stood out like dogs balls.
Steele + Petracca would be enormous and we would be balls deep in this finals campaign if we took Petracca in the draft, even with our bad run of injuries this season.

He was a kid when he was drafted
Are we really concerned with the personality of an 18yo
I would have been more interested in his Larke medal All Aust and B&F

Re: Petracca
The questioning of Petracca's attitude was the Saints recruiters justification for making a monumental stuff up.
