Into him. Is a true mid fielder that’s had to sit on the flank. Think he could be excellent for us.

Where did that come from? He is definitely an outside mid, but hasnt shown too much. Isnt he contracted and why do you believe he would be a good trade?

Shown good form when played in the middle. Struggled when left out on the flank. Think we can offer that at StKilda.

Who is he going to displace from our centre square set up??

Steele - Nope
Crouch - Nope
Jones - Nope
Gresham - Nope
Bytel - doubtful
Clark - Doubtful
Hannebery - only if he’s injured
Ross - he can’t even get inside
Byrnes - Maybe

Our Midfield is deeper than Carlton’s

What profile midfielder do we really need?
Seems to me an inside/ outside like Gresham or Jones is what makes the difference for us.
When both were injured we had a stodgy midfield and only worked when Ryder gave first use.

The profile mid we need is that 190cm attacking midfielder. Dow is not that. Unless his trade is the kick up the bum he needs, he will find himself in a similar purgatory he's in now.

If anyone, I prefer B.M.'s suggestion of Narkle, as he's a lot quicker and very much capable of a match winning burst of play.

No thanks. My Carlton support brother in law, who's a very good judge, doesn't rate him and I have no reason to doubt him. We would be better drafting the best available mid

Narkle doesn’t work hard enough hence why he’s in the outer.

Totally agree. I'd be interested to know what his value is come trade time. Huge wraps at the time, to date he's very disappointing.

Would prefer Lipinski from the Dogs.

And it seems Carlton would too.

Narkle is impressive when he plays, Dow is not!!!

If he’s not working hard enough, imagine how good he might be if he does work harder??

Would we not back our culture?!

I reckon Narkle is on the outer due to
Danger, Selwood, Duncan, Parfitt, Menegola

An elite midfield that consistently got them into the top 4

I honestly believe Dow is rated is because of his draft number, not his performance. Greg Williams was very blunt when assessing Dow - basically called him soft!

He has the opportunity to play in a GF and doesn’t work hard enough. He gets fantastic numbers looks really good but gets dropped. Fair to say he doesn’t want or can’t do what’s required. If he defended he’d be playing.

Or there are simply bigger name players

Did you think the same about Butler??

Or Jones not being able to get in the midfield in Sydney

Or Steele not getting a run at GWS

The key to moneyball trading is to find a club which is stacked with stars in a certain area of the ground… look who’s on the periphery and analyse their performances. Do they just need an opportunity?

Identifying unrealised talent is about finding hidden gems… not underperforming and frustrating players
Classic example - Mitch McGovern

In our team
An underperforming player is Battle or Long
Not getting many opportunities but has talent Bytel

I liked Dow in his draft year but has been very disappointing at Carlton. Would take him for free but wouldn't sacrifice anything of value in a trade.

He’s an inside mid with average foot skills, a younger version of Dunstan so NO thanks.

Has burst speed that sets him apart from Dunstan. More like a poor man's Jack Steven

He is being left out due to these issues even with injuries and lack of form to others. Every time he plays statistically he looks ok but he was then dropped to medical sub most weeks.

Your putting up a case that supports recruiting a player like Dow by the way.

That nearly sounds like Hayden McLean.

McLean

Have Sydney’s ruck/forward areas been stacked with talent?

Has he not been getting opportunities

Has he been impressive

I don’t think so

Perhaps McLean's talent is simply unrealised?

Has Narkle not been getting opportunities?

Personally I'd like both, if they came at minimal cost they would certainly improve our list.

Or he doesn’t have much

Who is the gun forward ruckman at Sydney keeping him out?!

It ain’t Paddy Dangerfield.

Can you tell me if you think McLean is a forward or a ruckman?

Perhaps that comes with the structure Sydney wish to employ, they prefer Franklin, Heeney, Reid and mid size forwards plus Papley.

They have Sinclair still there and young Logan McDonald as well as Amartey.

I think 75% forward & 25% ruck.

I'd rather he take ruck duties than Max or Membrey. Would he not be better on our list than Hunter, McKernan & Alabakis (have all 3 been chopped yet?)

I doubt that Dangerfield is keeping Narkle out. The knock on Narkle is the fact the Close, Meiers & even Dahlhuus are getting games before him.

A new home at Moorabbin may just be what both need. Don't sell the farm for either & please do not give away 2022's 2nd rounder.

Narkle is an inside mid

The three you mentioned are not.

McLean
Is he an effective forward? Not really
Is he an effective ruckman? No

So what does he add???

He is a bit of a forward, a bit of a ruckman but really, not that good at either.

To me he is like an average all rounder
Can bat a little, can bowl a bit … but ain’t going to win you many games.

He's a 22 year old key forward/ruck and in 2021 had the following games:

18 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal
9 disposals, 4 marks, 4 goals
13 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal
10 disposals, 6 marks, 2 goals

At the same age Rowan Marshall played 1 game and was promptly dropped. McLean now has 21 games under his belt and is improving.

I'm not saying that McLean is a star but he's tracking very well to be that second/third forward type who is a capable pinch hitter in the ruck. I don't even think he's that good a fit for us as I would prefer more of a pure ruckman to take over from Paddy. Would I happily take McLean as depth? Absolutely.

At some point we need to invest time into the guys we draft instead of picking up scraps from other clubs and ignoring the guys we chose
